  1. If you use the Media Center Extender then you can play those avi's, but I found it chewed up a lot of cpu and ram to use it so I just went back to Vista. It was also very unreliable, usually resetting itself and/or forgetting network/sharing settings after a reboot. I read over at X-S that the old trick of renaming the avi to mp4 allowed the 360 to see the files in normal sharing mode. I didn't get a chance to try this myself before I went back to Vista though.
  2. Yeah whatever the frick happened to '08?
  3. Crayon Physics Deluxe - a seemingly childish puzzle game. Innovative and addictive in equal measure. King's Bounty - nice strategy RPG with decent storyline, fun battles and immersive gfx/sound.
  4. For the general public it's between Home and Ultimate really. I don't see the problem with giving people the choice. If you don't want/need all the extras that Ultimate offers then you aren't forced into it. Go for either of the two Home versions. Starter/Business don't come into the picture.
  5. Either I missed something or I'm detecting a touch of sarcasm here
  6. I did stick with the beta for a few days but a lot of installers wouldn't work due to it identifying itself as MCE 6.1 or something. I decided to give Vista64 a try and it is blistering. Although it uses 3 times the ram of XP and a shade more CPU, it is quick. I haven't had any driver problems either. I'd have to say it's the best Windows I have used. Hopefully Windows 7 rounds out a bit more over the coming months and I'll switch to the 64-bit version of that.
  7. Most CHDs require a 2-3GHz processor to run properly on a PC. I remember a few years back on my 1.8GHz Sempron machine that I struggled to run a lot of CHD games. I'm guessing the Xbox processor just isn't up to the job for the large majority of CHDs. Not to mention that most CHD titles are newer games which would struggle to run anyway and would take up far too much space on the HDD. See here for a list of CHD games and their respective file sizes.
  8. Don't forget the 4096 files per folder limit on the Xbox
  9. By a mile the best resource for all versions of Oblivion (and the rest of the series) is the UESP Wiki.
  10. I still play it now and again. Once I discovered 100% Chameleon it pretty much ended it for me though, and it's hard not to use it I might give it a spin on my PC with mods though, see if it breathes new life into it again.
  11. The topic is Windows 7 Beta? I've been running it for a couple of days and I can't say it seems any faster than Vista or makes life any easier. It uses almost identical amounts of RAM (700+ MB) that Vista did, nor would I say it booted any quicker. I am having difficulty in installing some apps, and others have text/gfx glitches, but on the whole it is entirely useable (for a Beta)
  12. If you have to swear to make your point then it mustn't be much of an argument in the first place, but then I swear like a sailor in real life so I can't really criticise. I say fuck it, drop the filter
  13. I'll not be needing no 8800 or 4850 or whatever. Don't game (except Settlers or AOE3). Maybe later.
  14. I've had my CPU on virtually a 25% overclock for the past 2 years solid, not a problem. If I can get 2.8GHz instead of 2.2, and it's stable, then I'm happy. As for the RAM, I settled on 4GB of 1066MHz OCZ. I was going to just go for 800MHz but I deliberately picked a board and CPU that supports 1066 natively (BioStar TForce 790GX + 7750 Black Edition). Altogether coming in at £205 delivered. It is depressing to see the prices of some of the things on Newegg compared to here in the UK. The stuff is more or less half price. Luckily I already have all the other bits and pieces so no extra expense
  15. Thanks. One technical question I'm lost on though. On the spec sheet for the motherboard it says - *Due to AMD CPU limitation, DDR2 1066 is supported by AM2+ CPU for one DIMM per channel only. I read this at Neowin which sort of explains it. Looks like I'm going to have to go for a better mobo. Not only that, the 7550 CPU I'm set on apparently *needs* a 790GX Nvidia chipset or better to get the most overclocking out of it, meaning the mobo is going to cost almost double my original choice. At this rate I might just go with the Intel setup :S
  16. I already have a tower/case, PSU, 2 SATA HDDs and a SATA DVD burner. All I'm trying to piece together are a new CPU, motherboard and RAM. I do have an old AGP GeForceFX 5600 card which I can use temporarily until I get a newer gfx card, or just settle for decent onboard gfx. My monitor is an old Philips 19" CRT which I will be keeping for now. Here are a couple of quick setups which I thought looked good for the money - Kingston HyperX 2x1GB 1066MHz OR 2x2GB 800MHz (same price) Athlon X2 7750 2.7GHz Black Edition Asus M3N78-CM uATX AM2 (w/ Geforce 8200 onboard gfx) Total : £192 Corsair XMS2 2x2GB 800MHz Intel E5200 Dual Core 2.5GHz Gigabyte EP35-DS3L Total : £187 I don't use my PC for gaming but if it could run say, Oblivion/Fallout 3 at a decent rate then all the better. I do a fair bit of video encoding too but that aside it's just the normal web/burn dvds etc. Main demands would be - - 4 DIMMs for RAM, support for 8GB and 1066MHz or higher - Dual Core CPU at least. Tri and Quad core seem to be too expensive and unnecessary for my needs anyway - em.. that's about it really I have a few questions too like would 4GB 800MHz be better than 2GB 1066MHz, and could I get away with a lesser Intel like an E2200 or AMD like a 5600+? I will be overclocking my CPU too. Thanks for any guidance.
  17. Nice to see someone getting involved here for a change! Welcome sir
  18. There have been many reports of people banned that didn't play their backups online. Remember, even going online with a game just to update it counts as playing it on Live. As Inky said, it all seems to revolve around bad burns/early releases.
  19. Sounds good as always BP. Autofire is very welcome
  20. Personally I use MameUI FX32. It's as feature rich a version of Mame as I can ever remember using. Not recommended if you need to run something lightweight though.
  21. I never realised just how bad the d-pad was until I tried using it for Mame. Given that 360 games use the sticks for the most part, I never really noticed before. 5 month old post revivals ftw!
  22. The motherboard may not even allow you to overclock it, or the RAM may not be up to it. You're only going to get an extra 100Mhz or maybe 200Mhz anyway, just not worth it. Overclocking is pretty technical as it is so I would just google around a bit more and read as much as you can. It just sounds difficult at first.
  23. It does seem a bit much. Typically XP uses 400MB, and when I used Vista Ultimate it was more like 700MB. I read that MS said the minimum requirements were the same as Vista, ie. 1GHz processor/1 GB RAM/15GB HDD space. I'm due to get a new computer soon and I thought 2GB would have been ok, but I think I'll go with 4GB now to be safe. I guess I'm too used to this slimline, lightweight OS. Looks like I'll just have to put up with the bloat like everyone else
  24. I'm using the latest Chromium builds here. I just gave up on FF. Chromium is much faster rendering pages even if it is still missing some features.
  25. Because they are all 3D and not really classed as 'shmups'. It basically has to be top-down perspective 2D to qualify. The likes of those mentioned and say, Rez, would be considered borderline at best.
