mitochondrialeve Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 my parents always thought that gaming was for losers. what was your parents view on video games and how has that influenced your view? if you have children, what are your views on age restricted video games?
Devia Eleven Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My father was never much of a gamer, but for some reason he loved Racing/Airplane/FPS games. He never really restricted me from playing certain games, when I was growing up, Mature games really weren't mainstream, I was playing SNES, SGEN, and where there weren't really and M rated games. My mother was never aware of the games that I played, didn't really care actually, so I got to play games like GTA as a young teenager without parental moderation.
JKKDARK Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Since I was a little kid, my dad always wanted to buy video games for me and my big brother. My mother still hate to see all the discs and cartridges on my room
Gryph Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My parents always hated, and still hate, the fact that I play video games. So as I was growing up I had to hide my gaming.
Diso Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My parents bought my brothers and me games. Just kept the violence from the games they bought for us in moderation. They don't mind us playing video games as long as it's not too much, and we study hard and get good grades.
Mooney Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My parents restricted my time spent playing games as well as the games I bought for most of my life. My mom would not let me buy FPS games until I was 15, and just last year my parents stopped restricting my gaming time.

ken_cinder Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My parents never restricted my gaming, infact my mother bought my NES and paid for half my SNES. After that I bought my own stuff. Of course my habit became just that, and when I bought my Gamecube I came home with it and my mother was like "Oh not another system, what did you buy that for?", until I fired up Metroid Prime and she was in awe at how good it looked and played. It was the same as when I bought my Dreamcast, until I popped Samba De Amigo in and I couldn't get the controller out of her hands! I encourage my daughter to play video games with me, even if she can't really do it too well at 2-1/2. It promotes hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills and brain stimulation. Too much however can interfere with the rest of your life........my 48+ hour Rainbow Six - Rogue Spear stints online were proof of that, with me often getting no sleep over the course of a weekend. Still made it to work though.
onetrueblade Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 There were no real limits on gaming for me. Dad started out on asteroids and still plays playstation now, and mom is hooked on rpgs, so it was accepted. I was allowed to play whatever game i wished to growing up, so no complaints here.
L.S.D Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 My parents OBJECT to me playing any kind of video games. Even until today. I just don't care since I never depends on them to buy my games.

Samba De Amigo got her attention, as well. You're right about it improving you coordination and problem solving, too. It's definitely made me a little sharper. And My friends have wondered where I am after a month or two long game addiction as well.
solidius23 Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 No restrictions from my folks i was a straight A student all through school, so whenever i asked for a system or a game i usually got it. it was a useful tool in relieving stress from school or all night study sessions. plus i took part in martial arts and other outdoor activities as a kid so i wasnt a total game zombie. like cinder i try to get my kid to game too and its helping with his memory skills hes in kindergarten and got placed in 1st grade reading and math, i doubt gaming had anything to do with it i just had to brag on my kid!!!
Shibathedog Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 oh man, My parents had the attitude that they weren't into games because they where busy doing other stuff (which was probably true) and it seemed like they didn't want me to play games because they heard somewhere it was bad but didn't really have a reason for it (although i was a kid so what did I know) FINALLY i was able to convince them to let me get a console of my own, because me and my brother had saved all our money for it, it took years and years of begging, but damn was it worth it. after that they tried to limit the violent games, and whenever i did something wrong it was always the first thing to go. Then when I was old enough they let me do whatever as long as my grades where good. Pretty smart, they checked the ratings and all that, i wish parents would do that nowadays >_<
Smilee Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 As long as I got good grades my parents didn't care that much on what I played. If I got into trouble or bad grades, they simply took them away.
