  1. The other dat file is for a program called CLRMAMEPro. It contains the exact same information as the Romcenter dat, it's just set-up for use by a different program. I prefer Romcenter because I think it is more user friendly and the GUI is cleaner and less cluttered looking. The CRC is just a checksum, but it is the way many emulators identify specific ROM files. In Romcenter the CRC is in the column called "Signature". If you open ROM with WinRAR the CRC is listed in the column called "CRC32" and if you open it with Winzip is will be listed in the column called "CRC". You want to find files whose CRC's match the ones listed in Romcenter.
  2. That means "no good dump known". Basically, the game is flawed in some manner and there is no way to fix it currently. Yellow means it's still playable, red is unplayable. But sometimes you need those games. For example, the ROM msh.zip (Marvel Super Heroes - Euro - CPS2 game) is a game that is red with an X. It is this way because it doesn't have XOR decryption tables. All CPS2 games require decryption tables to be playable. But even though it isn't playable, it is the parent ROM for several other ROMS. One example is the ROM mshu.zip (Marvel Super Heroes - US). It does have decryption tables and is playable, but it is what is called a "clone". Its parent ROM is msh.zip... in other words, when mshu.zip loads, the emulator also loads a few files from msh.zip. So in order for mshu.zip to work, you either need to have msh.zip in the ROM directory too, or you need to move the files that mshu.zip uses from msh.zip into the mshu.zip ROM. On that note, there is a setting in Romenter that allows you to keep parents and clones completely separate or have all the files each ROM needs to run in each ROM file. Go up to the "File" menu, then select "Preferences", and then click on the "Romsets" tab. You will see 3 options: Merged, Split, and Un-Merged. Merged means that all the ROM files for both parents and clone are in the same zip. So in the example I gave above, all the ROM files for mshu.zip would be moved into msh.zip and you would no longer have a separate mshu.zip. I personally don't really like this option. Split means you have separate parents and clones. Which is exactly the situation I described above. The files that are unique to mshu.zip (or any clone) are kept separate in their own ROM, but files that they need to run from the parent at left in the parent. So they can't run on their own without the parent ROM present. This is the option I use for my own ROM sets. Un-Merged means that each ROM has all the files that it need to run on it's own. So using my example above again, you would still have separate msh.zip and mshu.zip ROMS, but mshu.zip would now contain copies of the files it uses from msh.zip inside the mshu.zip ROM. This allows mshu.zip to run without msh.zip present, but if you do have both ROMS then that means you have a few files in each ROM that are the exact same file so the ROMS take up more storage space than using either of the first two options. The key thing to look at is the CRC listed in Romcenter. You need to find the ROM file that matches the CRC listed by Romcenter. This is where those patches come in. If you have a ROM file that has the wrong CRC, you might be able to find a patch that can make that individual ROM file into the correct file for the emulator. Yup, that's exactly what you want to do. Also, if you right click on a the whole ROM (not just an individual file inside the ROM) and say "Fix ROM", Romcenter will rename anything that needs to be renamed and move any incorrect file out of the ROM. Just so you know, Romcenter moves these files to a folder called "archive" in the Romcenter install directory. This can be important to know if you are looking for patches because you might need some of those incorrect files if you find a patch that can convert them to the correct ones. You may have to delete any previous FBAXXX save out of the game save manager in the standard XBox dashboard, but you may have another issue. FBAXXX 8/26 was rather confusing because it has two XBE files. There is one called "fbax.xbe" that is 3.49 MB. That is the one you want. You just rename it to "default.xbe" and use it. But there is another default.xbe file that is generated if you click on the "pack.bat" file. This default.xbe file is 930 KB. That is only for certain people who have problems with the other one. You don't want or need that one. So make sure you are using and patching the correct file.
  3. Load the DAT file into Romcenter, then have ROM center scan a directory containing your ROMS. Romcenter will be able to tell you what ROMS files are incompatible with the emulator the DAT file was created for. Sometimes it's just the name of the ROM files is bad, in that case Romcenter can rename them for you. But if it is the wrong ROM file, it will tell you that, but you need to find it yourself. Since trading ROMS is illegal, a lot of people just trade patches. All patches do is change one version of a ROM into another. For example, if an emulator calls for an M ROM with a CRC of 12345678, but you have an M ROM with a CRC of 12348765, you can try and find a patch that will change your ROM from 12345678 to 12348765. The patches are usually in the form of IPS patches. You can apply these patches with a program like LunarIPS. You get patches at sites like this: Link It can take a little bit of work to get used to how arcade ROMS work, but once you get used to using DATS and understand CRCs it's actually pretty easy to get what you need.
  4. Yeah, exactly what I was thinking, PRican. MAME doesn't use hardware acceleration because that wouldn't be a faithful emulation of the original arcade boards. MAME's goal is to perfectly emulate the function of each chip set through software.
  5. The thing is, I didn't really think many of the Cube games were all that good, even the highly rated ones. And, yes, I own a Cube. I bought a lot of the more popular games, but they pretty much all left me disappointed. I was expecting quality that matched the N64's top titles and never felt it delivered. And I really wish people would quit acting like the PS2 has no good games... games like Ratchet & Clank and Jak smoke Mario Sunshine.. that game was crap. Not saying this is you, but I feel a lot of people who bash Sony and the PS are just bandwagoners who always like to bash the top guy becuase it's the "popular" thing to do. Nintendo can make all the original games that they want... original != good. Yeah, devs need to try new things, but some people like to praise Nintendo for their originality no matter if it's actually any good or really only appeals kids. All just my opinion of course.
  6. Link Link Two different people in those stories (look at story dates).
  7. I'd also like to point out that "evolution" is both a theory and a fact. Some of the mechanisms are theory, much of the evolutionary tree is theory, etc... But that evolution occurs is a fact. There are many examples. For example, most people know or have heard about the overuse of anitbiotics resulting in strains bacteria that are resistent to antibiotics. That is evolution. Certain bacteria gained or already had genes to resist certain antibiotics, antibiotics killed off the bacteria without this resistence leaving those with the resistence less competition and able to spread more easily.
  8. Well, it should be pointed out that "seperation of church and state" is not actually in our constitution. It was just a phrase Jefferson used in a letter once. But beyond that, you could teach "Intelligent Design" without any ties to any one religion. There are a lot of religions that hold that belief. It's just that people in this country seem to get their panties in a twist over anything to do with some form of Christianity. As much as people like to whine about Christians these days, the people doing the whining are almost always just as hard headed and narrow minded. Anyway, I don't believe the "Intelligent Design" idea, but I've got no problems with the idea being taught, but maybe that belongs in a class other than science. What class would that be? World history? I don't know., but you get the point.
  9. Haha.. that one is weird. It's a little strange watching those pink dots disappear all the while knowing they were actually still there.
  10. Yeah, Halo LAN can be fun... I've been to a few fairly large Halo LAN parties. But I'm still a PC guy when it comes to competitive FPS multiplayer. Though even on the PC I still prefer faster paced games than Halo... like the UT games. Anyway, where I really enjoyed Halo was Co-op. I played through Halo 1 dozens of times with my brother and friends. Played through Halo 2 co-op a few times too, but it never seemed quite as fine as the Halo 1 co-op. I wish more games had good co-op.
  11. PRican has a point. I think part of the problem is with burned media. Some drives have a hard time reading certain types or brands of burned media which results in the laser having to re-focus all the time. This can result in an early death just as quickly as having to seek all the time. But I still think Shiba is relatively safe with his Samsung drive as long as he uses quality media.
  12. I agree... plus the Samsung drives are probably the most reliable of the XBox drives to begin with.
  13. Meh... it has a battery that is soldered in. I think it's a bad idea buy anything that expensive that doesn't allow you to change the battery yourself. The battery will lose its charge capacity over time as do all rechargeable batteries... which could be a bad thing if you use it all the time. People have complained about this with previous iPods yet Apple has yet to get the clue.
  14. I like the XBox S the best. The Dual Shock is nice, but I don't think the arrangement they use for the dual analog sticks is as comfortable to use as the arrangement the XBox and GC controllers use. But I still prefer the Dual Shock over the GC controller for lots of reasons.
  15. Well, like I said before, if you have RomCenter set to "split" rom sets and the ROMS are still yellow then you will need to import because otherwise the games likely won't run on the emulator. So, yes, you need to import those files. You can try one of those yellow ROMS to see if they work, but they probably won't. Romcenter knows the ROMS are in another game because it scanned all the ROMS and knows what you have, but that doesn't mean the emulator will know where to find them. For example, you could take the M ROM from Mslug5 and put it in Samsho5 and Romcenter will show Mslug5 as yellow and say that the M rom is "Available in another game" because it scanned every rom file and knows where it is. But if you put MSlug5 into the emulator that way then the game will give you errors when you try to run it. Yes, you can just delete those unknown files. Romcenter moves all unecessary files to a folder called "Archive" in its install directory.
  16. File -> Preferences -> "Romsets" tab -> select "Split" button If it still says it needs to import after you do that, then go ahead and import.
  17. Because the democrats put up a horrible candidate. They fumbled the ball on a golden opportunity.
  18. Bah... the various "fishing controllers" that have appeared through the years were basically the exact same concept. Nintendo may be able to protect the exact technology they are using to accomplish the idea, but the idea itself is many years old. But, yeah, since Nintendo did it everyone will claim it is revolutionary or their idea.
  19. What dashboard are you using? In the settings you may want to see if the network is set to "DHCP" or "Static". You may need to set it to a static IP. Check out this link for more information: Link
  20. What do you guys think Jack Thompson is going to think about this? I can already see him claiming that this thing is teaching kids how to aim guns. It would be rather ironic if kid-friendly Nintendo ended up taking most of the heat next generation for producing "murder simulator" games. Perhaps this was one of the reasons behind the rather generic TV remote design of this controller?
  21. Yeah, but this is clearly about as bad as it can get. I'm no medical expert, but imagine trying to use your TV remote to play games. My hand and wrist ache just thinking about it. Couldn't they come up with something other than a remote TV remote type design? Why not a flight-stick style grip device that you hold in one hand. Much better ergonomics.
  22. He was talking about cross platform games and he is right. I'm sure you will see some unique games for the Rev because of this controller just like the DS has unique games, but cross platform games are a different story. Also, sure the DS has some interesting games, but most I have absolutely no interest in. They all seem to be aimed at the younger crowd. Anyway, this thing has carpal tunnel written all over it. It's an ergonomic nightmare for long gaming sessions. I think this would be cool as an accessory, but I think it's an utterly horrible idea as your main controller.
  23. I'm guessing the bomb threats had more to do with the detention center time than the cell phone hacking.
