Robert Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 The 2008 Olympic games is about to start in Bejing, capital city of communist China. The opening ceremony will be tomorrow, 8/8/08. Apparently 8 is a lucky number for the Chinese. So far, we've seen dissenters removed off the streets, internet censorship, buses bombed - and air pollution on an unprecedented scale. Today's pollution was so bad that you could hardly see anything, it was 60 times as much as the danger level in my country. Athletes have been wearing face masks to protect themselves. So, here is the chance for the Chinese authorities to prove themselves enlightened - or not. Which country will win the most medals? How do you expect your country to perform?Do you think China is a suitable venue? Please give all your opinions and happenings right here in this thread!

Well Politically no but didn't the same happen in Germany and with the cricket in Zimbawe?Environmentally no, your comments are reason enough plus all the green debates about China. Financially yes, tv rights cut, tourists spending etcNationally yes the pride holding olympics plus being the new super powerVenue wise no because of the above, but nodoubt the stadiums will be great Even Pirate bay don't want to support it http://www.slyck.com/story1737_SafeNet_to_Protect_Chinese_Broadcast_of_Olympic_Games Helping out promoting a country like China is not in anyone’s interest besides their oppressive government,” Peter Sundre, spokesperson of The Pirate Bay writes. “I’m quite surprised that the discussions about China versus human rights have been so quiet during the Olympics. In my opinion the Olympics should never be held in a country like that That said the west aren't any better we all have our dirt so less wait and see what transpires.
Lucandrake Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I have hope for the country I live in, not going to happen though...Like sh!t.No. All three of your questions answered ^.^. Btw I hate Olympics imo borefest.
Alpha Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I thought a thread was needed for this. http://en.beijing2008.cn/http://www.nbcolympics.com/ The 2008 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, is a major international multi-sport event which is being celebrated in Beijing, People's Republic of China from August 8 (with football starting on August 6) to August 24, 2008 and followed by the 2008 Summer Paralympics from September 6 to September 17. 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events in 28 sports, one event more than was on the schedule of the 2004 games.[2] The 2008 Beijing Olympics will also mark the third time that Olympic events will have been held in the territories of two different National Olympic Committees (NOC), with the equestrian events to be held in Hong Kong. Fatal Rose Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I will try to tune into this. What do you want to see the most GC?
Alpha Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I will try to tune into this. What do you want to see the most GC?USA vs. China .... the definitive basketball game, which will start in about 6 hours from now. I think I'll be watching it live. Microsoft and NBC have really done a great job with the NBCOlympics website. It's amazing how much they allow you to watch without commercial interruption. You can watch full games and even from days prior. It also has live feeds as well. This is when the use of technology becomes truly great.
Inky Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I watched most of the day today but nothing really interesting. of course as a male I am interested in the womens gymnastics, volleyball, beach volleyball events I missed the opening ceremony last night but I heard it was spectacular.

They had 2008 people on the floor in unison making perfect circles around the field and dancing horizontally around a huge ball (dancers are held by cables), representing the Earth. I have never seen anything like it before. The training involved for the opening ceremony must have been extremely difficult. Anyway, you can catch the opening ceremony in its entirety on the NBCOlympics website for free I believe. If not, I am positive they have the highlights for you to watch.
Robert Posted August 10, 2008 Author Posted August 10, 2008 Seems like nobody is really interested. Anyway, there was a really nice opening ceremony - with a 5km exclusion radius. And some nutter killed two Americans then jumped off a building to his death.
Agozer Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 The opening ceremony was probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen in the Olympics. The chinese really outdid themselves.
Skythe Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I think it didn't matter what Beijing did for the opening ceremony. Anything is better than Georgia driving around in pickup trucks and yelling out "Getter Dun!". I had never been so embarrassed in my entire life.
2eyez Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 only one american died and the ohter is in the hsopital. I'm watching the olympics though. I never miss it.
Alpha Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I didn't realize we had two topics for this. I went and merged mine into Robert's and renamed the thread. Anyway, USA beat China a few hours ago, with the final score of 101-70. They are already calling USA the "redeem team". Here's a snippet: USA: "It was our first game. We were very anxious. We missed shots that we normally would hit. But at the end of the day, you win by almost 30 points, you've got to take good things out of that," Wade said. "We played very, very hard. We give ourselves a chance defensively every night. That's what it's all about with us." China's Yao Ming, All-Star center for the Houston Rockets, started the showcase by drilling a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the first score of the game. The Americans made 21 of their first 25 shots inside the 3-point arc, though they had another inept night behind it. Still, with James, Wade and Bryant repeatedly getting out on the break, the poor 3-point shooting wasn't a problem on this night. "We came out a little tight. We knew that it was going to be a very emotional game for both teams, especially China, playing in front of their home crowd," U.S. forward Chris Bosh said. "We withstood the storm, we calmed down and we just played a lot better basketball." NBA players are wildly popular in China, where the league estimates 300 million people play basketball. The Americans, still known as the Dream Team here, enjoyed a huge backing during exhibition games in Macau and Shanghai, support that will surely help them here on their gold-medal quest. Bush came out first, walking to his seat above center court about a half hour before the 10:15 start. He was still shaking hands and slapping five with fans around him minutes later when Yao, back from season-ending foot surgery in March, led China's players onto the floor to a thunderous ovation.Read full article: http://www.nbcolympics.com/basketball/news...sid=192031.html
gymnist1026 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 when i was watching the cycling race the other morning, my mom asked me why there were no people lining the route (as compared with the throngs of people lining the route in the Tour de France). China has locked up its population so as to not embarrass itself with the squalor that most of its population lives in. On the Coverage on TV, the only shots not of the events are of the landmarks: The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, etc. They show no overview shots of the city like they have done for previous cities where the games were hosted in...
Darken Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Overall Medal Standingshttp://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/...GL0000000.shtml What you think of China getting most of the gold ?I think that the referees are in the chines side . I watched some event where chines get a high mark even they do not perform good .
