Robert Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Well I finally decided to get a newish computer. It certainly outperforms the old 500mhz model. Now Zinc runs all games at 60fps instead of about 4fps. All my neogeo games run at full speed now as well.MAME32 takes I don't really know about the best video card or processor or whatever, but here are some specs (whatever they mean) Processor: intel PentiumD Dual Core 3.0ghzMotherboard: ABIT AW8-MaxRAM: 4gbCase: Antec Plus View II ExtremeHard Drive: Seagate NCQ 400gb SATAGraphics: Powercolor X850XT 256mbOS: XP professional 2002 SP2DVDROM: Lite-On 16xDVD Rewriter: LG 16x Dual Layer Dual ModePower Supply: ATX EPS 400wTV card: Ultraview DBT-plus High Definition Card (with remote control)Sound: Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum (with remote control) Extra 80mm Blue-Light fan (and it glows in the dark when illuminated by an ultra-violet lamp) Now, it all sounds terribly impressive to me, but is it really?
Gryph Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 That is a very good computer. Excellent, I should say. I would have gone for the Athlon64X2 but that's just me. You have a flockton of RAM which is nice. Excellent video card, big harddrive, good DVD burner, nice case, and a good sound card. You're set.
olaf Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 about 41 times more RAM than me...5 times more hard drive space...15 times more processor power than me... yeah, you're good to go.
Agozer Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Pixar Studios\o/ Yeah, but not a regular consumer, who frequents emulation message boards.
James Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 4GB of RAM!? Who the hell needs so much RAM?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> No one really. I would like to bump mine up to 2gig and upgrade the CPU to a 3.4gb Hey robbert maybe you can stop useing those fully decrypted neogeo roms in Mame now.
Robert Posted December 2, 2005 Author Posted December 2, 2005 Decrypted or encrypted never made any difference in speed. The problem was if I have the roms. As for the 4gb, well memory is quite cheap these days, and I wanted a bit of future-proofing, so I thought why not? It means I have done away with the swap file completely, which means it can run even faster.
Agozer Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 How much did this monster cost?!!'A whole flocking lot' would be my first guess.
Weirdy Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) I'd say about $1,100 to $1,300 worth in USD Edited December 2, 2005 by Weirdy
ken_cinder Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I'd say about $1,100 to $1,300 worth in USD AHAHAHA! The CPU alone is probably worth near a grand. The new D's are retarded expensive. I too would have went with an AMD 64 CPU, Intels latest CPUs are terrible performers and nuclear furnaces in comparison. No offense Robbbert, still a way better performing system than mine.......just not "my" choice if I were to upgrade. The only way a box like that would be in that price range, is if it was some POS Dell, Compaq, HP or other store bought pile of garbage loaded with dollar store peripherals.
Wizard Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Intels still own everythign that isn't related to gaming. So I applaud thee. AMd for gaming needs.
Robert Posted December 3, 2005 Author Posted December 3, 2005 OK seems like it's a good computer. Even NRX works on it, lol.
wacko_jacko Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 I wouldn't of got the Powercolor X850XT 256mb, since a 7800GT and even the GTX isn't much more expensive. Other than that, its a pretty good system, though i would have got an AMD 64 since its cheaper than Intel Chips, runs cooler and is better for games.
