Thraxen Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) I beg to differ. The new controller forces developers to think about game controls from a different angle and be innovative. Rather than alienating developers, it most likely sparks a whole new interest in designing the games. He was talking about cross platform games and he is right. I'm sure you will see some unique games for the Rev because of this controller just like the DS has unique games, but cross platform games are a different story. Also, sure the DS has some interesting games, but most I have absolutely no interest in. They all seem to be aimed at the younger crowd. Anyway, this thing has carpal tunnel written all over it. It's an ergonomic nightmare for long gaming sessions. I think this would be cool as an accessory, but I think it's an utterly horrible idea as your main controller. Thraxen Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Yeah, but this is clearly about as bad as it can get. I'm no medical expert, but imagine trying to use your TV remote to play games. My hand and wrist ache just thinking about it. Couldn't they come up with something other than a remote TV remote type design? Why not a flight-stick style grip device that you hold in one hand. Much better ergonomics.
Thraxen Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 What do you guys think Jack Thompson is going to think about this? I can already see him claiming that this thing is teaching kids how to aim guns. It would be rather ironic if kid-friendly Nintendo ended up taking most of the heat next generation for producing "murder simulator" games. Perhaps this was one of the reasons behind the rather generic TV remote design of this controller?
oshisama Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Playing with the mouse/keyboard combo is the only thing that messed up my wrists. I think this new design is great, But I don't think it would be fun all teh time. Cos on my DS sometimes I get tired of using the stylus and just want to use the d-pad, but since the games that need the stylus don't use the dpad at all its rough. It has good and bad qualities.
oshisama Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 haha this was just posted on joystiq: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/mousedown/revo.swf ahaha great stuff.
ken_cinder Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I think it looks RETARDED, but I won't really judge it's potential until I get to try it. As for Nintendo screwing anything up, or "letting" other manufacturers gain ground..........who the hell is still blind to the fact that this is the day and age of mindless fanboy gamers, who have no respect for older games and games that are actually fun?If anything will kill gaming on any front, it's todays 12 year old........
Gryph Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Another good interview: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=60917 Eurogamer: A lot of Nintendo's previous controller concepts have been adopted by your competitors. Are you worried they're going to nick this idea too? Jim Merrick: Of course! As someone pointed out to me today, here we are, about to throw away 20 years of controller designs - designs which Nintendo came up with! There will be an influence on the industry, absolutely. That said, Nintendo will aggressively protect its intellectual property.

Nintendo may be able to protect the exact technology they are using to accomplish the idea, but the idea itself is many years old. But, yeah, since Nintendo did it everyone will claim it is revolutionary or their idea.
Gryph Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 An unofficial concept convential controller shell.http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651559p1.html
oshisama Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 That concept makes a lot of sense. It'd be great if it were offcial.
Lucandrake Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Not bad, I hope it is changed though, don't exactly want a gamecube controller there, I rather have another revolutionized shell then that *Is looking for touch screens and microphones*
Wizard Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 That concept could end up being very real if the demand is up for it. They might even make it the classic SNES style.
Shibathedog Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 im not too impressed with square.... But anyway, im not saying Nintendo is completley horrible, I think Nintendogs is fun too, Nintendo has ALOT of great games, i just think they are focusing on the wrong areas. I mean crap man, Im all for original games, My favorite console is the DREAMCAST for crying out loud, with games like Seaman and Rez!!! If THATS not original and a breath of fresh air I dont know what is! I just dont see how im going to get any game playing done with a motion sensing remote that has less than 5 buttons. Im sure they will come out with some fresh ideas, and it will work for awhile, but developers are just going to get sick of it after awhile and it will just become a pain in the ass. I mean, over half the DS games i have done really even use the bottom screen for anything terribly important. But when a game DOES use it, its pretty neat.
