Gryph Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I can't believe you just compared games to girls. It's not about WHERE it's from, it's what qualities it has. That's exactly my point about the girls thingy. It doesn't matter where it's from, case and point. But you said that it's impossible for you to like a Eastern RPG...what if they made one that had Western influence? Hence defies your logic about how you can't like a Eastern RPG. And about the girls comment, I've been playing too much Rumble Roses.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Well I only said Western because so far only Western RPGs have offered what I want to play. Once an Eastern one does it, I'll check it out too. Stinger, I classify RPGs as games that have indepth character creation and development, multiple conversation paths, and several ways to play the game. I have a more "create your own role" look on RPGs.
Wizard Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 And about the girls comment, I've been playing too much Rumble Roses.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Hahahah... Chick in the ring rule. It's one of the top-selling games in Japan at the moment.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>The game isn't that bad, it's very solid. The analogy works...in some ways....I think...
Daeval Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 What makes an RPG? That's a tough one.. Definately some level of statistical character advancement, how much is debatable. A relatively complicated story. Probability-based combat? I was referring to HOW you level up, not what happens when you do.And I was referring to Mr. G's question about levelling up.I know. I was looking at is as a single line of discussion, I should have replied directly to Gryph's post.
Jjangthekid Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 To me, I don't mind the endless level'ing up to 100 and beating the crap out of the bosses. What I look for is the graphics, magics, fmv's and storyline. If those categories are well nourished, then I don't mind going through the same ways of leveling up. I guess it all depends on the person..
Bluestinger X Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Stinger, I classify RPGs as games that have indepth character creation and development, multiple conversation paths, and several ways to play the game. I have a more "create your own role" look on RPGs. so morowind is like a perfect example.. i havent played many eastern rpgs with those elements.
Gryph Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Yes, to me Morrowind is a prime example of what an RPG should be.
Inky Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I agree, morrowind is what an rpg should be too me.
L.S.D Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Both sides have their pros and cons.Although I feel Western RPGs have a more solid and soundRPG element, they are more weak in storyline. While Eastern RPGs are more story-oriented, it might make the game more linear. I like Baldur Gate becos you could just go explore, take your time to do quest (well, I think so), sight seeing, monster bashing and such. I like Final Fantasy becos of the great story (FFVII), great monsters, eye-candy, and also great gameplay. Gee, it is hard to choose. Gryph, you should try FFVII. I must admit some of the FF series are not that good, but FFVII is really a classic. Or you can try FFIX, which is really old school.
Gryph Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I've played FFVII before. I didn't really like it. By then I was completely spoiled by D&D.
L.S.D Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I always keep myself open for more choice of games Too bad, you dun like FFVII.I know there will be a lot of FF fanboys snickering at you saying you dun know stuffs Not the end of the world...
Gryph Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I'm open to games but I've played enough of those games to know I don't like them. I'm not going to go back and waste my time playing them just to see if I might like it again. Plus, Final Fantasy fanboys are the lowest of low in the realm of fanboys. Also, your sig is a tad too large. In fact, it's very large.
Gryph Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Just get a different one. Remember, this isn't 2Emu.
Wizard Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Your (very attractive) sig is gone! My good friend Ed had a small encounter with her. I think she almost took his head off last year at E3. Anyways, now a days, you see the same stuff with practically little to barely visable variation now in Eastern RPGs (although their are some that do get thru being original, sorry folks, StratRPGs don't count). Although I have been seeing the basic D&D system implamented some how in every Western one, they do some pretty neat tricks to them.
