Thraxen Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 That's what I heard on the news. 75000 people are dead, AND 20 ARE AMERICANS! He made it a point that 20 of the people dead are American. The other 76000+ people don't matter, cause 20 Americans died, it's the end of the friggen' world. Ummm... I seriously doubt anything was meant by the comment. If you went to another country I'm sure their news organizations would point how many dead were known to be from their country. If the other 75,000 didn't matter then you wouldn't even know it was 75,000+ because that number wouldn't have been mentioned.
Samurai Edge Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 I guess I'm really lucky! I'm at Singapore (a country), which is south of Malaysia. Only a few places of Singapore encountered minor shakes.

Uk radio said it soo did some of the middle east radio stations. Its normal to mention how many people died.. i mean think of it those people were on vacation... they were in heaven on the beach next thing they knew they were pancaked by a wave, Its horrible for everyone... i just wish that everyone in those countrys would have been warned before the waves stricked. Hopefully they will have some sorta warning alarm system put in the area... hell i think they should anywhere there is a fault link in the ocean near a beach. I know one thing for sure now though... im never gona live near the ocean... to many hurricans and now this.. ahh.
Samurai Edge Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Yeah, lucky you!<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Which part of Malaysia do you live in? Nothing much happened there, right?
L.S.D Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 I live in KL now. Only the northern part of Malaysia was affected. The death tolls is currently 65++, small if compare to others
Cominus Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 That's alot of people. So this was sudden or what? Like it came out of nowhere?
Chaotica Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 (edited) Yes, noone was expecting it. It hit about 10 in the morning, when tourists where just coming out of hotels, or still sleeping in from Xmas parties. The waves generated by the underwater earthquake were at speeds of 500 - 600 km per hour, so there was very little time for reaction. Some of the waves were apparently 10 metres high, too. Gryph Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Luckily there haven't been big aftershocks to cause even more tsunamis.
Chaotica Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Yes, that has been quite lucky. Now the great fear is spread of disease. Dirty water is everywhere. When I say dirty, I mean sea water with bodies floating in it, dirt, and sewage. There is no fresh water to drink or wash in. With all the dirty water about, diseases such as diahorrea (sp?), cholera and dysentry can spread very quickly. Disease can also be spread from rotting bodies, if they aren't disposed of quickly enough. The whole thing is surreal.
DoubleDragon Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Sri Lanka was the worst hit area. Second is Phuket. Some more, it came during Christmas time. A lot of people was having vacation at Phuket <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It is just mind shattering how this has all come about. This is truly mass genocide. Estimated over 80,000 have died and the count is still rising. Please try and help out if you can. You can't help but feel for those suffering in southeast Asia.
Gryph Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Genocide is definitely the wrong word to use here, this is a natural catastrophe. And the death toll is now upwards of 114,000. Yesterday my parents donated $100 to the Red Cross so hopefully that will be put to good use.

If I could I'd go their myself and help but I can't. Meh, as sad as it is, life goes on for the rest of us */me goes back to fragging Russian soldiers in MGS3*
Gryph Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Dang. How did this happen?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>There was a 9.0 magnitude underwater earthquake in the Indian Ocean that caused this.
