Yes, you need a mod-chip to play emulators on the PS2. If you get one of the mod-chips that has the ability to be turned off it shouldn't affect any of the anti-mod games.

Just so you know, the reason groups like echelon and kalisto never released bin/cue selfboots (diskjugger instead) is that the bin/cue format can't handle the funky layout of selfboot cds. If you find a bin/cue dreamcast iso, you can be assured that it is not self booting.

No. It won't work without a modchip. As for loading cds and dvds, I couldn't say. Most likely it loads cds faster (easier for the laser to read).

It's a vertical scrolling shooter, a lot like Ikaruga. The shots I've seen of it are fantastic.
