Riot.EXE Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 ...My next question is for RPG's... ...What, do you think, makes the RPG experience better for the player? The story, the battle system, or the cutscenes?
ken_cinder Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 The first two are important to an RPG, but you ARE playing a role of a character through a plot and story, thus an RPG without a good story is not a very good RPG. HOWEVER, it also depends on the type of RPG. Hack 'n Slash RPG's don't require a good story, but if they lack in the battle system department they won't go anywhere and will suck. As for cutscenes, flock cut scenes........they have nothing to do with the game, they just add a little flavour (or if overused, annoy the crap out of you)
Inky Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 good story first. if it's not good I am not gonna suffer through all those random battles. and since there are so many random battles the battle system better be damn good too. or it's just not worth it. Cutscenes are just flavor. the same plot points could be handled with out them.
Gryph Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 I don't play many RPGs and if I do its PC ones. So I say its the story and battle system. But that's for any RPG. And I like RPGs where I can customize my character's stats and appearance instead of just giving them a name.
Agozer Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 I like RPGs because of the storyline. However, every aspect of the game contributes to the experience.
Sybarite Paladin AxL Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 The best RPG series is by far FINAL FANTASY
Chaotica Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 The best RPG ever is Planescape: Torment. The RPG experience is all about story. That is their cornerstone. I honestly think that games that call themselves RPGs but don't have a decent story aren't really RPGs at all. They are imposters. Like Icewind Dale. *yuck* Although I do enjoy Diablo 2 alot...but I don't think it's an RPG. It's an action game with lots of RPG elements.
Sybarite Paladin AxL Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 No, the best RPG is Final Fantasy; it has the best story no matter whatnumber. Also Diablo is just a hack&slash game which tends to becomeextremely repetitive......

Chaotica Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 I don't see what's so good about FF either. Planescape: Torment had the most creative, imaginative, poignant and sublime story ever. Oh, and it had Annah and Fall-From-Grace, too.
Sybarite Paladin AxL Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 Agreed, the misoginist in me hates X-2, but still it's the best series ever!FF FANBOY 4EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Riot.EXE Posted May 6, 2004 Author Posted May 6, 2004 Ok...time for my 2 cents... ...I personally think that the story and battle system go hand in hand...I mean...its a given that a story should be good, but who wants to play a movie? The Battle system in an RPG should fix that...and allow you to see the characters true potential, in the heat of battle...to me, thats what made me really give a sh--t about characters in RPG's, and helped the story become more enjoyable...every character had his or her own thing, and you cared just as much for those characters when fighting, as you did during events... ...Final Fantasy 7 (the game that created the chaotic inflated ego of square...but thats another story) proved that you can indeed screw this up...because the Materia system did just that. Don't get me wrong, it was a good idea, but it was used in the wrong genre...in an RPG, there shouldn't be THAT much freedom with the characters, in terms of abilities, because it ruins the importance of the characters in the storyline. If anyone can do anything, why does it matter if someone gets offed in the storyline, nothing is lost (except a limit break) because you could just as easily give what the now dead character had to someone else. Also...given the proper Materia...it was REALLY friggin' hard to die, which killed the challenge of battling...and killed any excitement in the process... ...so in my opinion, In order to have an enjoyable experience, the battle must show the characters abilities and traits just as much as the actual story should... (note: I also wrote something new in my first "hot question" post...check it out!)
Sybarite Paladin AxL Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 yeah final 7 didn't do so hot! each char has to have his own thing!final 8 is great though! and the junction system is ok!! but 5 had the job system which is probably better! but if ff12 would have a combined junction&joc system that would be great!!

The Final Fantasy creators them selves said, "There is no Final Fantasy Bible." Thats why it was made. Did you actually play it and got any of the 4 endings? I think not. I only 75% of the game completed on my first try. It is impossible to get 100% on the first run playing it if your just scheming thru it. You miss out on great stuff. What I don't like about it is the leveling system. It's crap compared to the other FF's. But the battle system is perfect.
