I remember in the original you 'earned' 1 continue for every hour of play. After 7 hours you unlocked infinite continues. If you just want to beat it it's preferable to only change colour when absolutely necessary. You should be able to get through the vast majority of the game as either black or white. I've always found continuing in these games futile anyway, I improve much much slower if I just keep continuing. Unless you actually want to just credit-feed your way to the end?
