  1. Change your default runlevel to 5. Edit the /etc/inittab file. If you want to stick to text mode login, create (or edit, if existing exists) a file called.xinitrc in your home directory. Comment everything (put a "#" before each line), then add the following line: "exec startkde". Run startx to fire up the X-server. It will autoload KDE. Debian: not sure. Fedora: Some packages are deliberately left out for legal reasons. At least that's how it was when it was still Redhat. For the modem, you may have to build your own driver if it's a software modem. Post your lspci -v output.
  2. The official board is down so I'll just post this here... Pressing B while at the weapon shop menu to go back to the game crashes the emu on the DOS port. Works on the win32 and linux ports. The official 1.36 works too. Zsnes ver: WIP 17/07 (Dos/win) WIP 07/07 (linux). ROM CRC (this is with the translation patch): 42C664C2 Error: General Protection Fault at eip=001d4a92 eax=0000a4ea ebx=00000001 ecx=053c7685 edx=04040404 esi=002edd44 edi=00 ebp=00250722 esp=00568084 program=C:\EMULAT~1\ZSNES.EXE cs: sel=00a7 base=83c41000 limit=02391fff ds: sel=00af base=83c41000 limit=02391fff es: sel=00af base=83c41000 limit=02391fff fs: sel=00f7 base=000131d0 limit=000001ff gs: sel=00bf base=00000000 limit=0010ffff ss: sel=00af base=83c41000 limit=02391fff App stack: [005680dc..004e80dc] Exceptn stack: [004e8030..004e60f0]
  3. Anyone has detailed tech specs of the beast?
  4. The CRCs of the unpatched ROMS check out.
  5. Equinox hangs when picking up health items. Heard this was supposed to be fix in the official zsnes 1.36 (based on the ChangeLog). I'm using the 06/09 WIP. Likewise with Dragon Quest 6 (with the translated patch) at certain areas and Treasure Hunter G when sleeping (again with the translated patch) Rom info: Equinox CRC = 96A4D1C0 DQ6 CRC (with applied patch from http://www.zophar.net/newtrans/download/snes/npr_dq6e.zip) = 276D9893 THG (with applied patch from http://www.zophar.net/newtrans/download/snes/thghawk.zip) = 2BBCCF62 edit: added more games that hanged. edit: added tech info abt the roms.
  6. I think I'm going to poop my pants. Screw Doom3. This is the one worth waiting for
  7. That's what I'm doing. But I don't like the idea. Does the game even support saving?? I'm under theImpression that the game gives you a menu right from the beginning with items such as "Start a new Quest", "Continue Quest" etc. and that the game might save automatically one you've gone past a certain point. However, I can't verify this because it's been a while since I've played Dragon Quest. Have you tried reading through any of the FAQs in GameFAQs? Yes. One of them says to talk to the king in the castle, but I've tried that and nothing happened.
  8. That's what I'm doing. But I don't like the idea. Does the game even support saving??
  9. How do I save my game? I can't find any save points in the first town.
  10. FC2 is more or less Redhat 11.0. RH (the company) stopped supporting the free version of RH in favour of their commercial RH Enterprise Server last year. FC is a community supported distro that takes off where RH left off. edit: to ans yr qn, yes. It's based on the 2.6 kernel.
  11. I used to use Gentoo. It's a sourced based distribution that lets you build the system from source using an automated packaging system (portage). Kind of life Linux From Scratch but automated. It's extremely flexible as you get to choose and customize exactly what packages and optimizations you want. But it takes a long time to install (literally hours...days on really old machines / slow networks) due to the compilation times. I don't think it may be too suitable for n00bs.
  12. I personally dislike debian though. Their stuff are usually behind by a couple of versions.
  13. Get a Mac if you want to use FreeBSD on the desktop.
  14. For beginners, try Mandrake (why do you need to buy anyway, it's freely available). RH (Fedora Core) is server centric, Slackware and Debian are more for powerusers.
  15. I take it that you don't pay much attention to FPS storylines, huh? I was aluding to id ones (Doom/Quake in particular). "You're a marine dropped into some alien base and you're to kill everything in sight." is hardly what I call a storyline. id's games are typically just showcases for their 3d engines. But I have to concede that the games which are made with their licensed tech fair a lot better in the game design/play department.
  16. Looks great from what I can tell from the trailer. Great attention to detail in the level design. But gameplay wise, I've never really gotten the whole "point" of FPS, especially the id ones. I mean, what? I run around in a room, shoot this, get that key, get out. Go to next level It feels more like a VR simulation than a game.
  17. I have a 1.44mb floppy disk. And I still use it too.
  18. Those people are talking about competitive gameplay, not bell and whistle shock elements like fatalities or blood.
  19. It can. Write support is possible too (although a little limited). It's just that some distros like Redhat (I haven't touched RH for some time, the newer Fedora Core may have them) do not come with the NTFS driver due to legal reasons. edit: Linux can access an NTFS drive but you can't actually INSTALL Linux on it.
  20. In a nutshell, yes. Mainly because of the build times. Screw something up, and you have to reconfigure and go thru the whole build process from square one. Also, you have to know your exact hw setup for starters, assuming you don't want to build everything, which will take you a long time.
  21. No amount of software can fix insecure computing habits. This is because security is a set of best practices, not a product which you can install regardless of what the companies hawking "security" software say. For starters: - Don't use IE. - Don't click on untrusted attachments. - Don't install software indiscriminately. - Turn off all unwanted background services.
  22. Maybe. Are your ALSA errors compile errors? Or run-time errors? If they are compile errors, it means there's something wrong with the toolchain (gcc, make, binutils, development libraries etc).
