3rd Person is a totally different genre dude.

Third person and Fighting games are using the environment nowadays. Making game development pretty nice.

Fighting

FPS (First Person Shooter)

RTS (Real Time Strategy)

Survival/Horror

Puzzle

Adventure

Extreme Sports

Car Combat

Wrestling

RPG (Role Playing Game)

MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)

Badass Ninja Games

That's like every genre. :)

First Person Shooters - Doom, Quake, Painkiller, yay!

Role Playing Games - Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment

Fighting games - all and any!

Scrolling beat em ups - Final Fight, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs

SHUMPS (I think that's the accronym) - R Type, Pulstar, Super Aleste

Futuristic Racers: XG2 and DethKarz are my favs here

Old skool platformers - too many to mention, but not your common Sonic/Mario games...I like the more obscure platformers, like the many found on the Amiga computer - Switchblade, Carvup, Super Frog and my fav game of all time, Gods

Futuristic Sports - Hyperblade and another very fav game, Speedball 2

Third Person games - used to hate them, but BloodRayne and GTA3 has changed that

Survival Horror games too!

I should've added those to mine. But what exactly is SHUMPS an acronym for?

Real Time strategy

FPS

Fighting (more 2D than 3D)

MMORPG

Real Time Role Playing

In no particular order

However for me the genre is a mere category. I hated fighting games until I played Samurai Shodown 2 after 7 years had passed since its original release.

It's the game that matters....

I like anything FUN, I don't have any real bias towards any genre as long as I can find a game in it that entertains me. The only genre I'm impartial to is fighting games, I feel that genre has started going downhill in the past 3 or 4 years and I don't play newer ones.

The genres I lean towards more......

FPS

Action/Adventure

Platformers

RTS

Quick google search shows that some people say "shumps" but the more correct term is "shmups." A very good site about all shmups is here

I couldn't find what the acronym means, but in old days the genre was called "Shoot 'Em Ups," so I think the accronym is roughly derived from there.

I recently downloaded R-Type Leo for Mame - how awesome is that game! Ah, R-Type...

Another thing...I used to love flight sims, but now I have surprisingly dropped out of them. Too many FPS, I guess.

in order:

fps's

2d fighters

3d fighters

I used to like rts and have played a few rpgs but I mainly found them boring - except for Daggerfall (and to a lesser extent Morrowind. Morrowind was alot better looking but it was a far smaller game world and there were less things to do, like no real estate or banking, and far less superfluous nudity! That's why the first time around I found plugins for all of those things.)

Sometimes I'll play puzzle games, but i don't really play side-scrollers, beat em ups, etc, that much.

Shmups = Shoot 'em Ups

R-Type Final owns hardcore.

for some reason, 3rd person mediocre games (like Vigilance and O.D.T.) and oddities (Nerf Arena Blast, it was a fun game by the way) appeal to me. it doesnt mean that i hate truly great games though but my preference will vary from there.

I actually prefer the Gradius series. Still awaiting Gradius V.
