So which one do you have? The Samsung has been known to be the most compatible out of all of them.

i had a thompson, but replaced it with a samsung, reads anything ive thrown at it so far, cdr, cdrw, dvd+/-

is that true with the regular dashboard? As in, does it read DVD+/- without modding?

thats the funny thing, what region are you in?

Ive read that the samsung's compatibility is always best, but its compatibility differs depending on the region you bought it in

Ive tested DVD-/+R DVD+/-RW CDR and CDRW in my samsung and they all worked perfectly, and im using a 100% unmodded xbox

The brands of CDRs ive tested are

Verbatim

Memorex

Imation

TDK

CDRWs

Verbatim

Memorex

Imation

TDK

FujiFilm

DVD-R

Memorex

Imation

TDK

DVD-RW

TDK

K-Hypermedia

Lead Data

DVD+R

Memorex

TDK

HP

DVD+RW

HP

Sony

TDK

And they all worked perfectly, even when fast fowarding at 2X in a DVD movie it still remained smooth

i have a thompson one............it plays dvd's just fine cd-r/rw no chance in hell unless its a real disc........but it plays back ups fine............dare i not damage my halo!

I have a Thompson drive and the only cd-rw it reads for me is Fuji Film, but later i bought more Fuji Film cd-rw and it did not work with music, only with games! My Phillips has trouble with fuji dvd-r but not cd-rw, but reads almost everything else that is cd-r/rw and dvd-r. I have not used dvd-rw.

I got a thompson. it reads every dvd-r I throw at it. no cd-r at all but memorex cd-rw works well. I don't care anyways cuz if it is small enough to fit on a cd-rw then I just ftp it to my hdd.

I have a Thomson in mine. Reads TDK cd-rw and DVD-R/+Rs have worked pretty well.

Although they say Samsung is the best/least picky of the three.

My XBOX has a Thomson. It reads both DVD+R and DVD-R.

I've had experience with all the drives since most of my have modded XBOXs and I'm the only one with a DVD burner. None of my friend's XBOXs have (they all have Philips or Samsung) been able to read DVD+R. But it just could be the brands I've used. Every XBOX I've encountered reads DVD-R. The Thomson reads virtually everything except CDR, but it's also the most likely to die. Fortunately, since I have a huge HDD, my drive rarely has to do any work.

thomson's read just about any dvd-/+r out (even cheapass dvdrs like princo or kypermedia). mine died a few months back when i first bought my xbox (it was used but i needed it for the mod i had) so now i'm using a normal pc dvd-rom but as you know only the samsung 616t modded can read retail discs.

i just ordered a laser for my old thomson for 20 bucks so i hope that will fix it cuz if it does, hdd is next so i can finally close up my xbox (lid is on like a kangoo hat )

Phillips drives are poopie, they seem to be REALLY sensitive to scrached discs, My Serious Sam game has VERY VERY minor scratches on it because it was used, and it works perfect in my samsung, but in my friend phillips it wont load any level, even if we cheat, we tried every single level because we where bored and none of them would load

BTW, as long as you dont have a phillips drive (hehe) go buy Serious Sam, its 12 dollars, and its a GREAT game
