Adding the word 'in' doesn't change what it means. I guess you've never heard about heritability? Our genes give us traits which can be compared to programming language like C++. But other factors actually "write the code" and are limit by what the programming language can do. But I'm not discounting the impact of genes on who we are and how we act, but to say that we are programmed by our genes is not entirely right.
