If GameCop decides to make a 1emulation team I will start folding as well...I used to do it for OCAUST but after my computer crashed from a virus I couldn't be bothered to setup the software again....

Universities eat this stuff up so why arent they playing along, donating their on-campus computers for this cause and at the same time creating inter-collegate competition and homework for their students?

Even high-schools and elementary schools........seems to me that the average joe would be the last pool of resources to dip your feet into.

Schools don't want people to install software other than those prescribed by them. And universities are doing it. Check out the Team stats page.

In highschool we had a little 5 person team running, but since we didn't have internet in our rooms we had to install them on the school computers and we got in trouble.

And most of Folding@home teams are online communities such as HardOCP, Icrontic, Overclockers.com, MaximumPC Magazine, ArsTechnica, Futuremark, Apple, AMDmb, Anandtech, and many more.

Some of our computer labs at university have the Folding@home software installed...but more computers = more power which = quicker the solution to our problems is discovered.

Kind of seems like a scam to me. I'm reading through this site and even though I wouldn't do it anyways because I got enough computers on this network using the internet already

This seemed fishy to me

The location of the dot indicates the location that the IP address is registered, and therefore is frequently the location of the internet service provider, not the user.

IP Address + Location = RIAA can find you easily if ur using warez or anything else.

Soo yeah, why would they want you to download their program anyways. It kills your CPU speed so they can figure out who knows what :D. I would be more than happy just to hand them a few dollars or so rather than run a unknown program...

Unless someone decompiles it

Now stupid people who won't notice your smileys will be like "DUH! What!? RIAA? No! Folding@home is evil. I don't want to help the pursuit of science. Duh..."

And the RIAA hasn't won the government law that allows them to dig in your computer. Not yet atleast. All they can do is pester the ISPs to give them records on people upload and download rate. But they're worried about uploaders since they are the providers. Kind of like how drug enforcement goes after the dealers first, so they can get rid of the supply.

Just to clarify for the people that won't bother reading the FAQ, Folding@home uses spare cycles on your PC. So it won't conflict with anything that you do. Unless its ultra processor and memory intensive. Then you can just pause it or shut it off.

Folding@home has nothing to do with the RIAA.....Folding@home is only used to solve complex algorithms...

Just can't see why they need users from all over the world to help. If they really wanted to learn so badly. They could have bought a ton of Pentium II computers and ran that program. Its pretty cheap for those things.

Oh well. Do what you want and wait for GC's Decision. Or just go ahead and do it.

I did a lot of things without his permission:

-Flash Movie

-1Emu Comics

-Kaillera Server

-CS Server

Yeaaaah. I'm not going to encourage you or anything :)

Well buying a crap load of P3 computers costs money that they don't have....Its not like they get all of the money they need from the government....

Hmm...the way most science grants work is that there isn't enough money to buy a whole mess of useless computers. Even though its Stanford and Dr. Pande probably has atleast a 2 million dollar grant for this project, its not enough. That money is spend on buying useful equipment such as DNA replicators, PCR machines, and paying for research students (yeah, we're treated like equipment).

This is a cost effective way to process such algorithms because it harnesses the power of already present computers that have an internet connection.

And do you have any idea how many P2 (or even P3) processors he'll need to do what Folding@home can accomplish? Millions of them. Well more like hundreds of thousands.

This is a school that operates on government funds (which are being cut more and more), not Celera or Genentech (big corporations that work for profit).

And I wouldn't want to start a 1emu team without atleast his go ahead. Him and Magnis own the 1emulation name. I mean, I wouldn't want some stupid Premium Member forum lacky to form a team on my behalf if I owned a webpage. But that's just me.

Forget that I just read more about the website lol.

I'm not going to edit it. I'm just going to forget this topic existed lol :)

Yay for Off topic Posts!

GryphonKlaw I think we are fighting the losing battle....Some people just won't understand the importance of Folding@home....

Oh well....back to wasting time on the internet.....

Im Already running the Google Toolbar version of it, it DOESNT slow down your CPU or anything, ive been running it forawhile now, so if anyone wants to just join my group they can

Are you folding for Team Google or your own? What is your group number? I can't seem to create a 1emulation team, it keeps giving me an error.

Sorry, no can do. I'm folding for techreport.com.

And it seriously does not slow your computer down or any other bullshit like that. It's just like another app, takes up your CPU when it's not being used (that's called LOW PRIORITY) and calls on the F@H server when it's done simulation.
