SNK to Atomiswave

From IGN.com

February 20, 2004 - After first announcing plans last year to develop games on Sammy's Atomiswave arcade board, SNK Playmore delved into specifics at today's AOU arcade show, now running at the Makuhari Messe convention center just outside of Tokyo.

The company revealed that it has finalized a partnership contract with Sammy. As part of the deal, SNK Playmore will put an end to development on its 13-year-old Neo Geo arcade board with the next installment in the Samurai Spirits series, due for Japanese arcade release this Spring. All future development from the company will take place on the Atomiswave board.

Sammy's Atomiswave board, first announced two years back as a low cost arcade board solution, makes use of a scaled down version of Sega's Naomi arcade chipset. So far, the board has received support mostly from Sammy itself, with Guilty Gear being the biggest name to appear thus far.

Getting things off to a big start on its new arcade home, SNK Playmore announced three titles for the board: The King of Fighters 2004 (tentative name), Samurai Spirits AW (tentative name) and Metal Slug 6.

SNK Playmore is promising to make use of the more advanced capabilities of the Atomiswave board to give these titles features that couldn't be achieved on the Neo Geo. King of Fighters will have upgraded sound, graphics and gameplay as well as new characters. Metal Slug 6 will feature network compatibility. Samurai Spirits AW promises some interesting changes, although the company wouldn't delve into specifics.

It was also revealed that development on the tentatively-titled The King of Fighters Neowave, announced by SNK Playmore for the Atomiswave last year, is still continuing. Details on the title were not provided at the show.

We'll have more as we learn it.

Well this is welcome news. Not to the emulation scene, but to the advancement of the SNK games. :$$$:

Let's make a toast to SNK's graduation after failing high school for 7 years in a row :)

lets just hope they dont go all new age 3D next gen techonolgy obsessed on us and they dont forget that their games rule the way they are

maybe their hardware holding them back is what made them rule...

It says that they are working on a KOF Neowave. They mentioned that in a separate sentence from KOF2004 so I'm assuming its a different game. And they've already started work on it.

But I don't think the Atomiswave could handle ultracool 3D since its just a toned down Dreamcast so the game will most likely be 3D...

And the great neogeo system has the final nail hammered in.

Well, I hate to say it, but if Nintendo was still making games for the NES, they'd have flopped harder than an obese man diving for pearls (okay, I had to stretch a little for that one!) by now.

As cool as ms5, svc, kof2k3 (I'm not counting ss5 in that list, as I

couldn't tell the difference between it and ss3) were, it is dead hardware. I thought I couldn't tell the difference, but then I got "jojo's bizarre adventure" for the psx, and although I am guessing it was an unfaithful, incomplete port of the arcade verion *and my rationing behind this is that the game also came out on the DC, and Naomi is supposed to be a souped-up dreamcast* it blows away kof2k3, svc, and all other cps2/neo geo games.

Honestly, I cannot think of any other industry where market leaders could get away with using 15-year old hardware! If Microsoft tried that, they'd be more dead in the water than a floating, corpulent corpse that fell victim to a Ted Bundy attack, and then went missing for years.
