Counting cost of Larry's fury

March 20, 2006

RESIDENTS of far north Queensland coastal areas emerged from shelter today to assess the trail of damage left by Cyclone Larry.

The category five cyclone caused widespread damage to buildings and vegetation when it hit the coast this morning, carrying winds of up to 290kph.

About half the buildings in Innisfail - a town of 8000 about 100km south of Cairns - were damaged in the cyclone while banana and sugar cane crops in the area were devastated.

Banana crops worth an estimated $300 million have been destroyed and 4,000 people left out of work.

6 inches of rain in 3 hours.

In the town of Innisfail, 50% of houses are damaged or destroyed.

2012 folks, the Mayans have never been wrong. We're all going to die.

We're not going to die on that year. A lot of it can be mere coincidence. I'm sure the Mayans have been wrong on some accounts. It was the same as Nostrodamus; sure he predicted that 9/11 would happen, but hell, a whole hell of a lot of his predictions were way off...

Anyways,, hope those people in Australia can pull through and cope with the damages the cyclone had brought to their lives

It should have been named Cyclone Mame :(

*wonders if James has survived it* :P

Unless James went there for a holiday he will be perfectly safe, as he lives only about 100 miles north of me. The cyclone was at least 1200 miles away.

There is no power, no water, little food and rescuers are having a hard time due to continuous torrential rain.
