Yes, you do need a custom firmware (or firmware 1.50) to run emulators. GBA emulation, iirc, is very good, with nearly full speed, sound, graphics, etc. And yes, with a CFW, you can play PSP ISOs that you download from the internet.

If I use a psp to create the pandora battery, could that one be restored to its original "legal" state? I ask because I may have to use someone else's psp to create the pandora to downgrade mine. Some people may not want their psp to be so...how can I say this...dirty? If you want to get rid of your custom firmware, just use the Network Update feature on your PSP to get the latest official firmware.
