I've always used McAfee VirusScan Enterprise because I can get it from work, free with infinite updates, because of the corporate licence we have. It's not too bad really, you just need to disable the on-access scan while installing stuff from CD otherwise the computer runs really slow. You can select what should happen when a virus is detected, and you can exclude selected files, folders, and file types from the scan. IMO a virus scanner is mandatory otherwise you WILL be infected in a short time after connecting to the internet. When I was rebuilding the hard drive I thought I caught a virus because svchost.exe kept going to 99% CPU, and sometimes ads would appear on-screen. The ads turned out to be messages sent via the the admin messenger port from outside. So I turned off the Messenger service and blocked the port. The svchost problem went away after applying windows updates, and turning off the DHCP service.

I would not know how much Vista is being pirated. Since I would never use it, I'm not in a caring position. What concerns me is that Microsoft are able to enter a person's computer for the purpose of destroying it. It is no better than being attacked by a malicious virus.

Saw this at GE forum. It demonstrates that Microsoft can enter your computer whenever thay like and damage it. Source

Finished fixing everything, got all the latest windows updates from microsoft and it all works fine. This is a replacement 6 gig drive. I made a ghost image for next time. Now, my boss brought in a spare 80 gig drive and this has now been installed to replace the 6 gig. The image was ghosted down, and in less than 5 minutes it was ready to go. As it's late I won't do anything tonight, but tomorrow (in 17 hours to be exact) i'll be able to start posting news again. I am very thankful that this ordeal is finally over.
