Dynamo Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 I think ive taken the proper logical steps as far as P2P programs go: I started with Kazaa (and quikly changed to K-Lite) which is my main source for music and videos,eMule which is good for finding ISOS (especially for old systems like Sega CD and Turbo Duo) and other rare stuff, and BT which equals if not bests the aforementioned programs in all the aforementioned areas. Thing is that my needs are expanding (game OSTS,more games/ISOS which neither of the aforementioned programs have, etc) and im looking to try the so-called next logical step in P2P programs IMO,DC and IRC. Ive shyed away from these type of programs after hearing about their complexity and having a minimum amount of stuff to share (i dont think i have 5 GB worth of stuff to share ). But now that i have the free time and patience, im willing to be schooled (or linked to info) about these complex P2P programs and ask: are they truly better than the P2P programs i have already?
Agozer Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 Well, for endless amounts of VGM, get DC++ and log on to vgmcentral.no-ip.com 1)You only need to share one official VGM album. Properly numbered. No gamerips allowed, unless a certain game never had an official OST release.2) You need to put the text VGM in your description. I'm there, so that place has to be good.
Gryph Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 (edited) "Mommy wow! I'm a big kid now!" DC++ isn't tough to use at all. The only thing different about it is that you have to share a certain amount. Here's a guide I wrote in another thread: - Install it. (Get it from http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net)- Open it.- Go to File -> Settings if the setup screen doesn't automatically come up.- In General, type in a username, choose your connection type, and if you know your IP and are not behind a router choose Active and put your IP in the space provided. Description and email isn't necessary.- Then you should see Sharing on the left side of the screen, go to it. Add folders till you share atleast 5 gigs of stuff which includes atleast 100 mbs of ROMs and/or ISOs. And then on the same screen, look down a bit and allow 5 upload slots.- Close the settings window.- You should see the left most button which is a monitor with wire coming out of it. Click it. It will take you to the connect to hub screen. Look where it says Manual Connect Address. In there you type the hub name you wish to join (you shouldn't join more than 5 hubs otherwise crap can get slow). Here are some good hubs:emu.servegame.comhub.barnitos.netclassicsega.homeunix.comromsterhub.ath.cxdevious.sytles.net The last two hubs aren't as big as the top three but they are still good. - If you can get into a hub but when you try to download something and it doesn't work, go back to the settings screen and change the connection type from Active to Passive. Hope that helps. -------------------------For IRC things are a bit different and complex. But thanks to www.packetnews.com and sites like that, it takes away a lot of the difficulty. Just type in the file name you want and it will search through the IRC networks and show you the results. Then you just click on one of the link there and it should open your IRC client and go to that channel, then you right click and paste in the chat box (when you clicked the link in PacketNews, it sends a little text thing to the clipboard) and it should be something like /ctcp blah blah blah and then press enter. Most of the time you will have to wait in line (or queue). Edited July 18, 2004 by GryphonKlaw
Agozer Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 (edited) Take note that most Emu-Network hubs that Mr. G listed require you to share quite a bit before letting you in. (ah yes, Mr. G was kind enough to mention that. ) Unless you can get a VIP status. Edited July 18, 2004 by Agozer
Dynamo Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 I see. Guess i will have to wait till i gather up 5 gigs of sharing material. Why such a high minimum? .So,were there any other P2P programs i missed? And which P2P programs are best for what (i.e Klite:music and videos,eMule: rare files etc.)?

Jiggs Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I wouldn't recommend IRC. It's very, very limited with what you can do, and the odds of getting busted for sharing are too high.

Jiggs Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 (edited) Actually, disregard my previous post and try IRC. It's basically one of the only original ways of distributing pirated content that is still widely used. IRC will make you appreciate the modern P2P programs more. Contact me if you're interested, and I'll point you towards some of my old stomping grounds. Edited July 20, 2004 by Jiggs
toolfan94 Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 Try soulseek. Its got alot of rare files to download. However its not very organized.
Dynamo Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 So, should i wait until i get a minimum amount of sharing stuff to use DC, or jump into IRC (the latter somehow seems way more complicated)?
gavin19 Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 I too have experimented with most p2p softwares and it is my opinion that IRC is definately the most beneficial if u take a little time to learn it. Here is a cut/paste of a very small (and pitiful ) IRC guide hastily written by myself which I use in my own DC hub. ~~~IRC~~~IRC has been around for years but it is still probably the best way to get ISOs for your console. As far as clients go they don't really have an impact on how easily you can find get what you are looking for, instead it really depends on the scripts u use along with them. Clients - mIRC - prob the best and easily the most popular IRC client > http://www.mirc.com There are several other clients available but really this is the only one you will need. Scripts - There are loads of scripts available for IRC like anti-spam, flood protection etc but for our purposes we need one that gathers info on the 'bots' in each IRC channel (hub). There are a few available like XDCC Klipper and XDCC browser. However there is a very good all-in-one script that includes XDCC Klipper and much more besides, called Invision. Again this script is all you will need but feel free to search for similar scripts if u like. Get the Invision script here > http://www.scriptheaven.net. This site houses many other useful IRC scripts when u feel like trying any out. FAQs, Guides - This is the standard IRC FAQ and probably the most in-depth too > http://www.mirc.com/ircintro.html This is a guide for downloading from the bots - http://www.kojin-asylum.pwp.blueyonder.co....ownloading3.htmAnd a guide to downloading from the servers, ie. other users - http://www.kojin-asylum.pwp.blueyonder.co....ownloading2.htm Links - There are many search engines to search the IRC channels such as IRCSpy and PacketNews, but here is a page with most of the main search engines all in one place > http://www.debateroom.com That should be all you need to start downloading the vast amount of games available to you on IRC. Happy downloading ) ~~~~~ Despite the fact that I host a hub on DC and it is easy to use I would definately advocate IRC as the best means of d/ling games. Usenet is very good too but not as many games are available and maybe even more difficult than IRC to learn. In the irc guide i linked to the main irc faq as a good reference point but really its the 2 'download' links which u will need to read more. As with most p2p the best way to learn is to just install the thing and use it and use faqs as reference. If u need to find specific games channels on IRC use the 'IRCSearch' box at www.debateroom.com, which searches for channel names rather than actual files. If u need a few channels to start u off then PM me and I'll let u know some If u do decide to use DC however don't forget to drop into my hub
Jiggs Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 (edited) The bad thing about IRC, after you learn it, is that you can only start one download at a time. Also, XDCC bots will sometimes cut you off if your download speed drops below a certain level (I encountered one that refused to send to anyone below 30 KB/s). After you fool with IRC, DC is the next logical step. I like to think of DC as a more user-friendly, (intentionally) warez-oriented version of IRC. Edited July 22, 2004 by Jiggs
