Quad core is not useless. All 4 cores can still be utilized, there just isn't currently much if anything that will make use of the 4 cores in a seperate nature (For example, a game using 1 core for physics calculations and the others for different things). Future proofing it is.

DDR3..........hrmm, I haven't seen much of it yet to decide if the performance yield is worth the extra buck. Good to get a board that will support it, and maybe buy DDR2 for the time being (Should be backwards compatible, but check in case)

I don't do NvIdia, I can't answer this question. What I can answer is brand. I stand by Asus.

What about in terms of V-Cards, and should they be bought depending on the processor? (Some people tell me go intel because they are above the market atm, but then others tell me AMD is better suited for gaming? aside that, for some reason my brain connects Intel to Nvida and AMD to ATI, is my brain doing a common sense thing or just assuming?)

O and to answer Don's

What do I want out of it? I want to be able to run Crysis on max, and be ready to run games like "Guild Wars 2" when released, monitor is optional but I know that I wont be happy unless I get a decent widescreen one with a pair of either logitech gaming gear (mouse/keyboard) or RaZer, and a kick ass headset to go with it (I plan on doing heavy vent) and make them fit all under the 2k budget.

If I can't run Crysis on max under that budget then tell me my dreams are false, so I can go ahead and start picking out decent parts for a computer that can run games coming out for at least 3-4 years :(. Even if on the 4th year I'll end up running specs on low just to get 30 fps.

If you want a Computer that can run Crysis on Max then get the Intel Dual LGA Skulltrail Mobo, 3 Nvidia 280s with Tri-SLI, 2 Intel Core 2 Extremes, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and Liquid Cooling. You should be Set to go.

lol

My computer is a Budget computer and can Run Gears of war Maxed out completely, and has completely run thru any other game ive thrown at it at Max settings as well and it was under $1000, if youre willing to add another $1000 then i guarantee you should be set for 3-4 more years. I Believe this computer i have now should be good for about 2 more years, but my Mobo supports AM2+ for Quad core and i can just upgrade my Video card at any time.

Sadly enough my Mobo is built for Crossfire so i cant SLi =[

But in that case i COULD just buy 2 ATI 4870s and use Crossfire

If i Replaced this mobo, i would upgrade to support both DDR3 and DDR2 and go for Intel

I built this PC; i have the ability to upgrade at any time in the near/far future.

And at this point i bought items at budget prices because the gaming industry is moving too fast, the 9800 came and went VERY QUICKLY, what was once a $600 card went down to a $200 card, imagine if i wouldve spent all that money and it gets outdated.

So you cant beat the odds that way, you gotta build Budget at first, then slowly upgrade with the times.

Dude a computer that godly x.x, I want one D:!

So I take it it's not going to happen with that price range? :(

All I got to say... is with 2000 dollars... Youll get alot closer ALOT closer building than you would have pre built. Im glad everyone talked you out of it. It'll get done man... you just gotta get through this initial "what the hell will go with what" phase.

If you're going to custom build one yourself by ordering all the parts separately and then putting it all together, I would recommend being patient and check out newegg and/or deal sites. Computer component prices fluctuate in price and you'll be able to save some money if you wait a while.

The responses are right though that you dont need to go overboard with the most recent parts. I upgrade my computer once every 2 years or so and I usually spend a maximum 300 on it. Then again, I'm not much of a graphics person so I don't bother with the higher end parts.

Damn, how the hell did the dev's make the game , supercomputers?

Ok, so now that reality is set in, parts, suggestions?

I still don't know whether or not to go AMD/Intel , ATI/Nvida, wtf crossfire is, Ram I'm pretty sure I'll just go with 4 gig DDR2 (further details then that I'm un-sure of), and if I should get a super Duel core or a avg quad core?

Did some reading up on Asus, don't know "too" much but recommendations by not only cinder but a highschool tech geek I used to hang with so I'm pretty sure I'll go that route with the mobo.

Razer Mouse/keyboard + awesome games *hug*

AMD vs Intel comes down to Price. In Which AMD Wins for me. Yes, Intel has the better item, but at 4x the price, is it REALLY worth it to you?? Also, AMD just released this program that shuts out all other unnecessary processes from running while youre in a game, i havent tried it yet but ive heard its good.

ATI vs Nvidia is personal Preference, id never but an ATI card, not cuz theyre bad, but because im more comfortable with Nvidia and they constantly release updates and even have the 30 day step up program.

Crossfire is to Ati basically what SLi is to Nvidia, a way to use more then one video card at a time.

And RAM 2GB is more then enough if youre gonna run a 32Bit OS. On a high end PC running on XP 32bit and 4GB, your RAM should drop to about 3.2 due to the Video card.

And for the dual vs Quad, i say set yourself up with a mobo that supports both now, get a dual, then get a quad later. Saves money

I'm not gonna say anything about parts cuz Don has you covered there I think.

I am gonna say WTF does everyone want to run crysis max for? the game sucks no matter what settings you run it on. it's just an unoptimized engine. crysis warhead is supposed to look as good and run on much lower specs, which means all those spec chasers did it for nothing.

Posted

Well, here's my mindset to answer your question inky.

Crysis is the most demanding game out right now (I think or at least the most popular), and logic says if your computer is speced high enough for the most demanding game out right now your future proofed for a while :(!

Although my logic isn't as computer savy as it should be, you make it sound as if crysis requires great specs because the programmers suck and just overload the game with code. True or False?

Posted

I can tell you that the sequel looks as good and requires less spec, so my guess is sloppy or unoptimized engine.

Posted

The sequel doesn't look quite as good, and does not run on Cry Engine 2. There are things Cry Engine 2 is capable of, that the engine Warhead runs on isn't capable of.

That said, I will agree Cry Engine 2 is lacking optimization, but the specs required to run it high up there, are for the average user with a poorly optimized PC in the first place.

If people could learn to keep their machines running smoothly, specs would be more realistic.

I run Crysis at settings people with higher spec'd machines can't, simply because my machines are always run lean and clean.

Secondly, everyone seems to be all about resolution before detail. WHAT THE HELL is the point of running at 1600x1200 with medium detail? Half sized textures at a higher resolution, will look worse than full sized textures at a lower resolution, PERIOD. No if ands or buts, detail over resolution ALWAYS!

Crank the detail, and THEN raise the resolution until you run out of "Oomph!".

Theres no excuse for the "But my LCD's native resolution...." I have some displays with fixed pixels, and 1: they scale fine 2: You can afford to build a new rig for a game, but not get a new monitor? Fixed pixel displays are yesterday, stop making excuses.
