solidius23 Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 i like it, loads pretty fast and is very minimal cant wait to see what google does with it.
Bobdrakke Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 (edited) Not interested, far too minimalist.I find it kind of refreshing. It's lacking some things. Some MAJOR things like being able to scroll by clicking on the mouse wheel. It blows my mind that I can't do that. I didn't realize how much I used the scroll wheel button. A more robust bookmarks/favorites thing would be nice too. I like what I see so far, I like a clean and simple looking browser though. it is hella fast. I'm kinda surprised my gmail isn't integrated into the homepage or anything. This is the first beta release. I'm sure they're going to roll that stuff, as well as Google Reader, Google Docs, Calendar, etc in future releases. There was a nice article I read earlier how this could be a major challenge towards Microsoft because many people believe web apps like this are the future. They're already ahead of the game. I didn't know this but Chrome has been in secret development for 2 years+. A guy at another website I visit is one of the founding members of the Chrome team and also works on Firefox at Google. In an interview with the Mozilla Foundation CEO he said that 85% of their revenue comes from Google...now they're competition is Google. Interesting stuff. Didn't one of the main devs of Mozilla co-create Chrome? also as long as people use Google search in FF they will still make money that and people are resistant to change as IE still has the market share. So it will be awhile before FF is obsolete. I don't know about privacy polices as them owning double click ad firm and people going out all Google from desktop search to email and browsing activities thats alot of eggs in one basket for my liking but thats my 2 cents. With the privacy issues with phorm I hope you can see where I'm coming from. Edited September 3, 2008 by Bobdrakke
Gryph Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Yeah I know where you're coming from with privacy issues but Google owns my soul so there is little I can do. And the Firefox main dev you're talking about is Ben Goodger I think and yeah he was one of the original Mozilla guys and now Chrome. And Darin Fisher.
Wizard Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Any word on a Linux release?+ Mac = Coming Soon.
Lucandrake Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Well after using it all day I have to ask you guys, where did you d/l Chrome? It hogs more memory then FireFox, flash sites (IE:Youtube) actually freeze up my browser mid-video from time to time, and when I torrent it actually takes at least an extra minute to load pages when compared to FireFox. Me no likey, me go back to FF3!
Inky Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 I didn't have any problems when I used it for a bit yesterday. but I didn't do any 'tube. I did some torrents and didn't notice anything.
Gryph Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I got it from the official google site. I saw one video on Youtube and it was fine.
Inky Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 I didn't realize you could drag tabs into new orders, and drag a tab outside the window to create a new window. pretty nifty. I always wondered why I couldn't reorder tabs in FF. the recently closed tab list on the home page is brilliant IMO, I don't know how many times I've closed a tab on accident and had to re-search or use my history to get back. I like the home page alot. I wish I could lock some pages to the home page though. overall. give me ad-block, an indication of my gmail inbox, and I'll never look back. for some reason FF3 has been crashing on me alot since I upgraded from FF2.

You can set your homepage to a single page or multiple pages, same as FF. I'm positive you can rearrange tabs in FF, I know for sure it can be done in Opera. There is an Undo Closed Tabs addon for FF btw.
Gryph Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I wouldn't expect any ad-block from Google since that's where they get their money. But I totally agree about a built in Gmail indicator. I would love that. I use TabMixPlus in Firefox so I don't have those tab problems but Firefox should have that stuff built in. You can reorder stuff, lock tabs (I think), and open recently closed tabs. My experience with Firefox 3 has been a lot worse than Firefox 2 but a lot of it has to do with how crappy Flash 9 is. Most of the problems should be fixed with Flash 10 but it's still annoying.
Inky Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 I'm looking into something called privoxy to block ads externally right now. I don't even need all the ads blocked just the obnoxious ones. googles little ad-sense ads don't bother me, pop ups, pop unders and ads that make noise are the main offenders.
Agozer Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Yes, you can rearrange tabs just fine in Firefox 3.
Gryph Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 This already blocks pop ups pretty effectively. Just a heads up that Chrome does not protect your saved passwords and anyone can have naked access to all logins and fulltext passwords at a click. So if that's a major thing for you then Chrome may not be for you.
gavin19 Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 (edited) You could block ads externally with Peer Guardian or most firewalls have an integrated HTTP blocking feature. It also turns out that Chrome is integrated with the Windows Hosts file so you can add entries into that too. I added these two for starters - 127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com127.0.0.1 ads.yieldmanager.com Edited September 3, 2008 by gavin19
