i l l m a t i c Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 A durable new drug that prevents HIV from entering human cells and causes almost no side effects has been developed by a team of researchers at Kumamoto University. The new drug, code named AK602, was reported by the research team's leader, Hiroaki Mitsuya, at the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in Kobe on Tuesday. The drug's main feature is that it shuts out the AIDS virus at the point when it tries to intrude into a human cell. Current AIDS medicines can lose their effectiveness in a few days when the virus changes and develops a resistance to those drugs. But AK602 is different because it reacts to human cells instead of attacking the virus, Mitsuya said. He said the drug sticks to a protein called CCR5 that acts as an entrance into human cells for the AIDS virus. When the new drug becomes attached to the protein, it can prevent HIV from entering, and thus stop the virus from spreading. The researchers conducted clinical tests on 40 AIDS patients in the United States. AK602 not only proved effective against viruses that had become resistant to other drugs, but it also caused almost no side effects, the team said.(IHT/Asahi: July 7,2005) http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/...0507070204.html
Alpha Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 This is amazing, finally there is some luck for MAGIC JOHNSON!Wooohhh..but one question, this focuses on before you attract HIV right? So why would they give it to people who already have HIV? (may have misunderstood)
Agozer Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 The way I see it, the new drug just stops the spreading of the HIV now.
Gryph Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 This is very interesting. I hope something actually comes of this. You can read the Abstract here: http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/robot_pages/Mee...IDS0021043.html
bubbawmu2 Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 so will they try to kill it out like they did with smallpox? will we all have take this vaccine? me= do not like shots

By applying AK602, the clean cells become resistant to HIV.

Gryph Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 ALMOST no side effects? <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Heh, it's really tough to make anything without side effects. It's one of those unfortunate things. Because he is rich he can afford those medicines.

Here is part of a lab report I wrote that explains it in a quick and easy fashion. 1.) What is the difference between AIDS and HIV? HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a retrovirus which can cause Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. HIV is the agent that causes the disease while AIDS is the group of immune deficiency symptoms, or syndrome, that characterizes the disease which occurs in the final stage of an HIV infection. 2.) How does HIV work? HIV is a retrovirus so its genetic code is stored in RNA. In order to replicate it transcribes DNA from RNA with the use of reverse transcriptase. The DNA is then incorporated into that of the host cell which hijacks the machinery to make more HIV. First, HIV enters through mucous membrane and then infects CD4+ cells which then replicate rapidly and spread all across the body with the help the blood stream, where the viral particles infect the lymphoid organs. The immune system counter attacks but the virus in the lymphoid tissues remain and replicate. HIV has a high mutation rate so that helps it to escape from the T cells. After some time, the HIV cells then attack and lay waste to the immune system which allows opportunistic diseases to flourish and eventually kill the affected individual.
