  1. Laptop computer storage is racing fast towards the 500G-byte level with Fujitsu becoming the third hard-disk drive maker to announce a drive at that capacity. Fujitsu is accomplishing this capacity by combining three disk platters-- the magnetically-coated disks on which data is stored-- each with a 170G-byte capacity inside the drive. Hitachi, the first company to announce a 500G-byte drive, and Samsung Electronics are also using three platter designs. The third platter increases the thickness of the drive to 12.5 millimeters versus most other laptop drives, which have just two platters and are 9.5 millimeters thick. As a result the Fujitsu drive won't fit into the drive bay on many laptop computers, so its availability doesn't mean an instant capacity upgrade will be possible for all laptop users. Hitachi's drive is also 12.5 millimeters thick, but Samsung said it has been able to keep the drive height at 9.5 millimeters on its Spinpoint M6 drive. Fujitsu will begin selling its 2.5-inch drive in May. It will have a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and can transfer data at up to 300M bytes per second. The average seek time for reading data on the 4,200 rpm drive is 12 milliseconds and 14 milliseconds for writing data. Fujitsu didn't announce pricing. This is truly good news. The more that do this the better the price and the better the quality. I myself could really use this in a laptop and with my business I am always running out of space on mine. Read full story HERE
  2. Microsoft will stop making external HD DVD drives for its Xbox 360 game console, but won't say whether it will offer a Blu-ray Disc drive instead. ADVERTISEMENT The company will continue to provide warranty and product support for existing HD DVD players, it said Warner Bros., which initially supported HD DVD, said early this year it would switch to Blu-ray Disc, a decision widely seen as a mortal blow to the format. Retailer Wal-Mart also recently said it would no longer sell HD DVDs. Initially, Microsoft said Toshiba's announcement would have no effect on its Xbox plans. Well there is another Microsoft lie saying oh this will not effect the 360. Well it looks to me like it sure will. Read about it HERE
  3. I found this story quite amusing. All 20 of our police dogs — German and Belgian shepherds — are currently being trained to walk in these shoes," Andre Hartwich said. "I'm not sure they like it, but they'll have to get used to it." The unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, Hartwich said, but rather a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries on duty. Especially in the city's historical old town — famous for both its pubs and drunken revelers — the dogs often step into broken beer bottles. "Even the street-cleaning doesn't manage to remove all the glass pieces from between the streets' cobble stones," Hartwich said, adding that the dogs frequently get injured by little pieces sticking deep in their paws. 4. But the victory for Blu-ray Disc may be short-lived if consumers choose to download high definition content from the Internet, market researchers say. Online movie download services from iTunes, Amazon and others have gained traction in recent years and increased their movie, TV and other video content offerings. The Internet gives consumers a choice of building a library of HD movies bought over the Internet instead of buying a Blu-ray Disc player and building a new library of movies-on-disc, said Carnevale. "Physical media distribution could become a thing of the past," he said. I know that HD vs Blue-ray in size could have a effect on what people download since a Blue-ray can hold up to 50gb of data vs HD that can hold up to 30gb of data. But as for me I would be willing to to download the extra up to 20gb for the extras. I know most won't and that could bring a road bump to Blue-ray. Read the full story HERE
  5. EA, the world's largest independent video game publisher, said it was releasing details of the proposal to get the attention of Take-Two shareholders after Take-Two's board turned down its second bid in two weeks. In its response, Take-Two called the EA offer a "highly opportunistic" attempt to take advantage of the game's upcoming release. "Electronic Arts' proposal provides insufficient value to our shareholders and comes at absolutely the wrong time," Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick said in a statement Sunday. Zelnick said EA rejected Take-Two's offer to resume discussions of the takeover bid the day after "Grand Theft Auto IV" hit store shelves. EA said it offered $26 per share Tuesday after Take-Two rejected a $25-per-share bid earlier this month. To me this looks like EA is learning from Microsoft. If you reject our offer we will just bring it to the attention of the shareholders and see what they have to say about it. Get the full story HERE
  6. Microsoft is up to its bad self again. A Microsoft executive on Friday sent workers an upbeat email outlining a vision of how the software giant expects to take over Yahoo and merge the companies' cultures and resources. Yahoo spurned Microsoft's 44.6-billion-dollar bid for the veteran Internet firm on February 11. Microsoft is reportedly planning a hostile takeover bid if Yahoo's board of directors doesn't change its mind. In a message to employees, Microsoft platform and services division president Kevin Johnson shared "a perspective of the process going forward." This is so like them to try to bully their way in. They don't wanna sell we will just take it away. But when you got Bill's money I guess you can do anything and get away with it. Full story HERE
  7. "The United States is the main culprit ... for all those violent acts," Serbia's Minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardzic said in Belgrade. Other Serbian leaders have called for calm after the riots. But an aide to hard-line Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said any future violence also will be blamed on the U.S. "If the United States sticks to its present position that the fake state of Kosovo exists ... all responsibility in the future will be on the United States," Kostunica adviser Branislav Ristivojevic said in a statement. I am so glad I don't live there. All Kosovo wants is its freedom and it is all are fault as they say. Oh and the that was found dead at the Embassy. Authorities identified the dead person as Zoran Vujovic, 21, of the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad. Serbian media said Vujovic used to live in Kosovo, but fled in the wake of the 1998 war. 10. You guys just don't get it The Key is in the Processing 1080p processing can be done at the source, such as on a Upscaling DVD Player, Blu-ray Disc Player, or HD-DVD player - or it can be done by the HDTV itself. Depending on the actual video processors used, there may or may not be a difference in having the TV do the final processing (referred to as deinterlacing) step of converting 1080i to 1080p. For instance, if the TV is utilizing a Faroudja Genesis, DVDO, Silicon Optix HQV, or homegrown processors, such as the ones used in higher-end Sony, Pioneer, Hitachi, and Panasonic sets for example, may be equal to the processors used in many source components - so the results displayed on screen should be equivalent, or very close. Any differences would be more noticable on larger screen sizes. 1080p, Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD Also, keep in mind that with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, the actual information on the disc itself is in the 1080p/24 format. Players, such as LG BH100 Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo player, have the ability to output 1080p/24 direct from the disc to its output. Blue Ray is superior and I am all for one format for now. I am not saying that others should not try to experiment and make this better but for now Blue Ray wins...and yes Sony and Time Warner had a lot to do with this.

  13. For all you that ever wanted to experiment with Linux and were afraid to or did not have a separate machine to try it on here is you answer. I have tried this and it works quite well. There's no doubt that Linux—particularly Ubuntu—is a killer operating system full of excellent apps, but for about a million reasons, you're stuck running Windows as your main operating system. We understand, these things happen. But what about all those killer Linux apps you've left behind when you decided to live the Windows life? Sure you could dual-boot or run Linux in the confines of a virtual machine window, but wouldn't it be great if you could run those apps side-by-side with your Windows apps—like Linux users can do with WINE or OS X can do with Parallels or VMWare? You can, and today I'll show you how to seamlessly run your favorite Linux applications directly in Windows with a free software called andLinux. Here is the full story and where you can get your copy

  15. "We're announcing that developers will not need to take a license, or pay a royalty, or other fee to access any of that information," revealed CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday (according to Microsoft's transcript). "As an immediate first step to apply the principles today we're publishing to the Web over 30,000 pages of documentation for Windows client and server protocols that were previously available only under a 4D trade secret license. In addition, protocol documents for additional products like Office 2007 will be published in the upcoming months." The company's newly published Interoperability Principle spells out the terms to which Ballmer referred: "Microsoft will publish its documentation for these Open Protocols and Open APIs on its website so that all developers will have the benefit of this technical information in a manner that takes advantage of the nature of open discussion on the web. Microsoft will not require developers to obtain a license, or to pay a royalty or other fee, to have access to all this information." But free access, the Principle makes clear, does not mean free use. While Microsoft will no longer charge fees or royalties for parties seeking information on how to make their software interoperable, it may yet charge royalties for the way others use that information. As with most I do find this hard to believe that Microsoft would give away this information for free. So wo here thinks like me that this just a way for Microsoft to shift its business strategy again? In the wake of their Yahoo bomb of trying to take and buy them out I think they are just trying to look good. Read about it HERE
  16. A U.S. embassy spokeswoman said families of diplomats and support staff were being evacuated after rioters stormed the mission in Belgrade and set it on fire on Thursday. The ambassador and core staff would remain. "We believe that yesterday's attacks on our embassy were conducted by hooligans and thugs," a White House spokesman said in Washington. A young man was found dead in the U.S. embassy. The British, German, Croatian and Turkish missions were also attacked. I read about this yesterday and still cannot find out if the one person found dead inside was a rioter or a U.S. military personal. Anyone know? And the statement by the White House is a joke Hooligans and Thugs. What a choice of words. Here is the full STORY
  17. TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese man was arrested for trespassing this week after turning up at a high school dressed in a girl's uniform and a long wig, local police said. ADVERTISEMENT Thirty-nine-year-old Tetsunori Nanpei told police he had bought the uniform over the Internet and put it on to take a stroll near the school in Saitama, north of Tokyo, on Wednesday, the daily Asahi Shimbun said. When students standing outside the gates started to scream at the sight of him, he dashed inside the school grounds, hoping to blend in with the crowds of teenagers, the paper said. They also screamed, forcing the man to flee, losing his wig in the process. A school clerk pursued him and stopped him at a nearby riverbank, the paper said. Police confirmed the arrest of the man in school uniform and wig but declined to give further details. What the hell was this pervert thinking? Blend in ya right. Story HERE
  18. "Our goal is to drive a creative and social revolution in games with the same transformative power that we've seen in digital music and video sharing," said Schappert. Among the homespun games that Xbox users can already share is Little Gamers -- a 2-D, side-scrolling action game created by a 24-year-old Belgian software programmer. There's also a puzzle game called Trilinea that was built by a trio of Brazilian developers. And Rocket Ball, developed by a U.S. gamer, features a street version of dodge ball. Microsoft is hoping that the effort will lead to an explosion in the number of titles available for the Xbox 360. The company said it expects that more than 1,000 games will be available for the console by the end of this year. It's about time. Full story HERE
  19. If no agreement is reached, "the government will equip itself to introduce legislation swiftly if suitable arrangements between ISPs and relevant sectors are not forthcoming or prove insufficient," the report said. That kind of legislation would essentially require ISPs to examine what content a subscriber is downloading, opening a range of privacy concerns. Representatives of the U.K.'s Internet Service Providers' Association could not be reached for comment, but the ISP industry generally opposes measures that would require monitoring of content on their networks. That view is supported in existing in European Union and U.K. directives, which says ISPs are not liable for material passing on their networks. Yes this would be a big blow and a concern for privacy. I suggest all you Brits to scream from the top of your lungs at this one. Full Story HERE
  20. Although the hackers operated from about a dozen towns all over Quebec, their botnet network was international in scope, infecting 39,000 computers in Poland, 28,000 in Brazil, and 26,000 in Mexico-- the top three countries affected by the group. In all, they hacked into more than 100,000 computers in 100 countries. Always knew them Canadians were evil Find it hard to believe they did not list the USA as a target. I know someone got hacked here by that...literally. Full story HERE
  21. Heart warming story for all you pet lovers out there. Dennis thought he had seen the last of the dog days later when his squad headed back to its command post some 65 miles away. He couldn't take the dog with him and watched as it tried to follow the Humvees away from the border. Two days later, while Dennis and a comrade were working on a Humvee, he looked up and saw the dog staring at him. "Somehow that crazy damned dog tracked us," he wrote Jan. 9. But the reunion was short lived. Military policy prohibits having pets in war zones, and Dennis was given four days to get the dog off the base or kill him. The decision was easy: Nubs was going to San Diego. The logistics, though, were anything but easy. Just like the government when a problem arises that can't be fixed kill it. The Marines have not changed since I have been with them 27 years ago...to me this is a bad thing. Full story HERE
