What are we REALLY teaching our children
Daeval replied to zhugeliang's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Along the lines of what Phantom was saying.. Where I'm at, it's broken down like this: High Schools - A TON of people are all homey'd out, wearing the same brands you see on MTV, etc, and the most popular or rich kids drive tweaked out cars. Community College - About a third of the people are all homey'd out, and a TON of people drive tweaked out cars. (I'm at a CC, for now) Universities - VERY FEW people are all homey'd out, the rich kids drive really nice (but stock spec) cars, and almost everyone else drives the cheapest thing they can afford (presumably so they can afford more alchohol ). So I guess you could say that "gangsta" gets less cool the further away from high school you get, educationally speaking. I'm sure this has a lot to do with "fitting in" and whatnot. -
If this thing says "Blocked 0" have I not set it up correctly, or has nothing blocked tried to connect?

I don't see anyone stating this. This thread started out as nothing more than a personal attack on the opinion of someone else, did you not read the first post? It looks like nothing more than flame inciting. Had I been here when it was started, I probably would have put a lock on it and thrown away the key. Right, what SNK said. This was a debate started in another thread, and continued here to keep the other thread from going any further off topic. There was no flame involved as the stage had already been set for discussion. I can see where that wouldn't be apparent if you hadn't seen the other thread though. -

I figured this was closed because it looked 'tense' with flame, though it may have been just a little premature. Regardless, I'm done "debating" with you, SNK. You made some interesting points, but you're still claiming victory over something I never contested. You've mentioned his American look, which is something I didn't give much thought to, as well as his Gi, which was thoughtful. You even talk about how most characters at the time didn't really look like their styles. OK, that's cool... Then you jump right back on the wrong train, talking about what the designers were trying to go for, and claiming once again that I ever argued against this. For the last time, I said he didn't look like someone doing Judo. I never, in any of my posts, claimed that the designers did not mean for him to be judo-based. It's taken far too long for you to grasp this, so I'm done with the discussion. If a Gi and two throws out of 18 moves in Tekken 1 are enough to claim Judo-based to you, that's a matter of opinion and we'll have to agree to disagree. It was fun while it lasted. Good day sir. -
Odd that they'd include the network connector and skip out on the HD, although I could see where that would bulk it up a bit. But whatever, if you already have a Hard Drive, you already have a PS2 and you don't need this thing. If you want it, you get to pay whatever Sony (Or madcatz, heh) decides to charge for a Hard Drive housing. It's not the inconvinience (I never could spell that word) itself that bothers me. What bugs me is that this makes it seem more like Sony doesn't give a rat's patoot about online play. And as much as I enjoy actually seeing the people I play with from time to time, sales indicate that online play is going to be a big factor in the continuing success of the current generation (and a given for the next). This would have been their chance to match the XBox in terms of features where that is concerned, including the HD AND the Network Adaptor on board. Edit: NICE new pics K'. That is one tiny system.

I played this at E3. It looked like it could have been fun, especially as a party game (It was at least 2 players, maybe 4). However, it was kind of confusing at first (lots of flashy things and bright moving colors and general confusion) and my friend and I mostly ran around like headless chickens. Basically, you're an alien that takes over the bodies of people in the environment. Each person has a different type of attack, and you use their abilities to collect the most.. coins I think it is, by forcing other humans to drop them by whacking them with your attacks.

The Paul (From Tekken) Judo/Not Judo Thing
Daeval replied to Daeval's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Well, I wasn't really arguing with anybody with my initial post, just pointing out what I observed. I don't really care what Namco wants to call it, all I know is that it doesn't look like Judo to me. However, you decided to take the opposing stance and in that you charged yourself, not Namco, with defending your position. I look forward to reading tommorow's post, and to keeping this civil as it has been so far (at least in this thread). -
Discussion continued here: http://www.1emulation.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9522 To keep everyone relatively sane in this thread.

Ok, I moved this here to keep from flying off topic any further in the previous thread. Warning, this'll be a doozy. I'll start by examining SNKs last conribution: Correction: I said that, even though he WAS supposed to be, he sure didn't look like it. Take a look at my original post: There I clearly state that I know that he is officially supposed to be based on Judo (it's even in the manual). What I'm arguing is that he does not represent what he is "supposed to" represent. He does not look like he is doing Judo. Let's move on... Again, take a look at the quote above. You found "proof" of something that I had confirmed in my original post. My argument was never changed, I merely pointed out that you were arguing something that I already agreed on, and were missing the point of my original argument. My point, as is clear from my original post quoted above, was that he does not look like he is doing Judo, despite that official sources say he is. Let's continue... I was being absurd to make a point. You were saying that Paul looked to you like he was doing Judo. To me, he doesn't look like he's doing Judo any more than Ryu does. The two throws Ryu does (Morote-Seoinage and Tomoe-Nage) ARE throws used in Judo. There's no misinterpretation to be had. Check these out: http://www.judoinfo.com/images/animations/...oteseoinage.htm http://www.judoinfo.com/images/animations/tomoenag.gif Those are Ryu's throws. Judo throws are borrowed for TONS of characters in fighting games, and that's no big deal. Sarah and Kage from VF, for example, both use several Judo techniques. What I was responding to are your comments like this: My unstated question was "What made you think he was supposed to be Judo (assuming you didn't check the official info on him) way back with Tekken 1?" I took a look at his movelist to try and figure it out myself: None of those look anything like Judo techniques, so it couldn't be them. The top 5 are flying kicks, very much like Akira's F, F+K, K from Virtua Fighter. Then we have a punch, punch, leaping kick combo, a silly looking flip kick, and a series of Forward-palm style punches and Akira-style elbows, with their accompanying lead-ins. His standard punches and kicks, as well as his stance, are nearly identical to everyone elses, and don't suggest a particular style. So we move on to his throws: Ok, his Arm Throw is an Ippon Seoinage, and his Rollback Throw is a Tomoe-Nage. The Leg-Push Throw is a Flying Armbar, which COULD be considered a Judo manuever, we'll call it a half. The Power Punch is another Akira-style thrusting elbow/punch. Ok, so he has 2 and a half Judo manuevers. That's only only one and a half up on Kazuya (who has a hip throw). And that's out of 18 total. The Flip Kick is just silly, and then the other 15 out of his 18 moves look like moves borrowed directly from Akira. So, to reiterate the core statement of my original post: And that's how I ended up with the Ryu analogy. As already shown, Ryu has 2 Judo throws. Paul has 2 and a half Judo throws, I'll even give you 3 for the benefit of the doubt. That's only 1 more, and out of a much larger moveset. It's clear that Paul (From Tekken 1, where you said you first saw the Judo influence) and Ryu use about the same number of Judo techniques. So, I bring you back to something you said: You could replace "Ryu" with "Paul" in that last sentence and you wouldn't have to change anything else, as has been presented in the examination of Paul's movelist. If you saw some other connection Paul had with Judo in Tekken 1, what was it? Since, in the process of examining your last argument, I've basically presented mine, I leave you the floor.

I understand what you were getting at now. I was only considering that it didn't matter how the parents who were to raise the children, got how they were (good or bad people). Right, at first glance, that wouldn't matter. Maybe it would to a psychologist for reasons I didn't think about, but I dunno, I'm not a psychologist. Right, it looked good on the surface, until I started thinking about it. Like most things, it's more complicated than it first appears. That's why we leave these things with people to degrees in real life. Ehhh.. Maybe.. See my first post in this thread about my general views on all that. It would be interesting to find out, but until convinced that's where I stand.

You're obviously just being contradictory at this point. If it was some great designer's eye that proved this to you years ago, you'd have also realized that about a third of the characters in tekken have at least one judo-based throw. Hell, even RYU from street fighter has the exact same two throws as Paul (his ippon-seionage is an under-the-arm grab, but it's the same throw, and heck, Paul's is backwards if I remember correctly). That doesn't make him any more judo-based than Paul is. End of argument before I have to hold back fire here.

Drill all you want, you're missing the entire function of genes here. How do you determine who your "crap genes kid" is without determining if he has "crap genes?"
-
I doesn't make an iota of difference if the scum parents' grandparents weren't scum. You only need a pair of crap parents. It doesn't matter how they got crap. It is painfully obvious which people are just unbelievably horrible and skanks. You see loads of scum every day. Who should under no circumstances have children. I agree, it is quite hard to see which parents should be in the experiment, but I think finding the scum couple would be pretty easy. Just spot a detestable couple and use them. But see, this brings us back to square 1. Are the scum parents scum because of their genes, or because of their environment? Because if it's not their genes, they aren't going to pass any "scum" genes on to their kids, and the experiment of seeing how "scum" genes do in a "good" environment is ruined. Chicken. Egg.

And to think, I was about to let you off the hook.. Hehehe I've never argued that Judo is what the officials call it. That's what's in the manual, that's fine. I covered that in my very first post. My point from the start was that his style sure as heck doesn't LOOK judo-based, even non-sport judo, and that they would do much more justice to the character by admitting that it's based on something different. He has had roughly two judo moves (a one-shoulder throw and a suicide throw) since Tekken 1, and ten to fifteen "other" moves that are closer to the core of his arsenal, most of which look like 8-way fist or some other heavy striking art. So as far as I'm concerned, we both win. "Judo-based" is his "official" style, since that's what you were arguing (and that I never contested). However, you haven't given me evidence (which would come in the form of moves, I would imagine) that suggests that the "official" reasoning is good, and that his style is actually based on Judo. So unless you'd like to contest the actual argument I was trying to make, we can share that smiley beer now.

At first this made sense as a decent experiment, and then I realized it's kind of a chicken and the egg issue... What if Child A's scumbag parents were only scumbags as a result of their environment? Likewise about Child B's great parents. Without making any unscientific assumptions, how would you tell when you got a set of genes that were prone to "good" vs. "bad" things? I guess you'd have to find people with traceable genetic tendencies, like a family history of depression or something. And even then it seems like it would be tough to tell what's what if each successive generation was raised by the previous. Weirdness..

I feel silly even responding to this, but what the hell.. Most of what I've got is Old Navy or 2nd hand store stuff. I like Old Navy because their stuff is cheap and plain. I prefer solid colors to logos and text, and ON is pretty good about that. Gap isn't hideous, but most of their good stuff is just overpriced Old Navy stuff anyway. I don't go for "vintage" at 2nd hand stores, just cheap. I wear a good mix of colors, but most of my stuff is relatively dark (navy blues, olive greens, marroons instead of bright red, etc). Pants and shorts are usually cargoes for utility more than style, although I do like the look more than plain pants. Jeans used to be really baggy but are now down to "relaxed." I recently realized I have a ridiculous number of two-tone "ringer" tees. Twice, I bought one black w/grey to wear to work and when practicing judo (because they fit nicely and look good under a gi), and they were like 3/10 bucks so I ended up wth I think 6 total, 2 of them black. The main exceptions to my solid-color scheme are a black Cowboy Bebop shirt with a large picture of Spike that my girlfriend got me, and a black Flogging Molly shirt with a large Skull and Crossed-swords logo on it. There are also a few white freebie Adult Swim shirts I'll wear because it's friggin' hot and I have no other white shirts. They're not too gaudy though.

Exactly my thoughts. I've always felt that genetics probably has more to do with our "base" abilities: What we're prone to, especially in terms of "objective" things (relatively objective for this subject, anyway) like athletic strength or IQ. Environment then expands on that base: Someone "raised by wolves" may be strong and quick-witted, even if he was born of sloth-y intellectual types. Likewise, a natural athlete with great genes for strength or endurance may neglect those skills if raised in an environment that better rewards intellectual thought. Regardless of genetic makeup, people tend to develop the things that they will help them "survive." Genetics are like the stats you roll when you create a D&D character, while your class and skills would represent the effects of your environment. When it comes to personality, I'm still up in the air. I think only very base principles are genetic. The kind of things involved in the aforementioned involuntary sex change. When it comes to trivial things, like a strong temper or a cheery disposition, I'm more tempted to say it's environment related. Who knows though, there have been studies to show all kinds of things like this in either direction.

Wow, that was harsh. He was just offering friendly advice, even if he did use the word "dumb." All he's trying to say is that you're missing out without the shadows, which add a lot to the atmosphere of Doom III. You'll probably get more out of the game if you reduce the quality from Ultra to High (or hell, even Medium looks dang good) and turn shadows on. On those settings, you shouldn't get the hideous lag with shadows on, and the change in other graphics is minimal. It's possible that you'll still have problems with shadows, but it's unlikely, and you only specified problems in Ultra mode in your original post. Doing this may also reduce the lag you get "outside." If you like it the way you're playing, that's cool, he was just making a suggestion that might improve your experience. Oh yeah, and the Cyberdemon is apparently in it, though I haven't reached him yet. Barons are in it but they look nothing like Barons.

You can't, we were just talking about how the combat system is similar to online rpgs. Althought, that would be really cool for the next one. Like cooperative play or something. More games need co-op...it is my favorite method of online play. I'd rather play with friends than against them. Agreed, co-op rules. Not very much has had it since about the time the super-nes died. Maybe we should have a "co-op games you should play" thread.

Hehe, thanks guys. And yeah, the printer is the dead giveaway for the photoshopping. The perspective is way off on the paper especially. -
