Well, it's long-past due, but I'm upgrading my PC. Here's what I'm thinking of buying:

Western Digital 80GB 7200rpm ATA100 8MB WD800JB

Apacer 512MB 400MHz PC3200 CAS 3.0 DDR DIMM

Intel Celeron 2.8GHz (400MHz FSB) Retail Box & Fan

ASUS P4R800-VM Sock478 ATI9200IGP Dual DDR400/AUDIO/VGA/LAN

Any comments?

By the way, here are my current specs:

Intel Pentium 3 733MHz

256MB SDRAM

15GB HDD

This upgrade will be an improvement, no?

When was a Celeron compatible with a P4 board O.o?

Does P3 and P4 use the same board? Anyways, looks nice otherwise.

Agozer :

Nope, a Pentium 3 uses a socket 370 motherboard while a Pentium 4 uses a Socket 478, which is a whole lot smaller then the socket 370.......

K`dash :

Well, ever since the Celeron's core has been replaced by one similar to a Pentium 4, changed sockets to 478 as well and then upped the main bus to 150. (I think, but still too low compared to the P4's 300+ Mhz main bus...)

random guy :

Yep, it will.... ^^

Umm... Wait.... There's an integrated VGA for that motherboard!!!?? O_O

I always wondered why they were compatible to a degree.

and a ATi 9200 is good

So, will it work or not (the motherboard w/ the cpu)? If not, what type of main board would I need?

GHz isn't always everything you know.

You can get an AMD 3200+ to do as good as a P4 3.06Ghz. Hellalotta cheaper too.

i would still aviod celerons since its lower in cache compared to p4's

Exactly and cache can make a big difference.

Maybe, but my budget will only stretch to an athlon- 2600, a p2.4 or a celeron p2.8, so I figure I may as well get the celeron p2.8

Bah, ignore the other opinions and get the Celeron....and start overclocking.

Only if you're not careful. Just make sure there is proper cooling and don't overclock too much and everything should be fine.
