AOL aggravates me so much. It's because of them that has partially spawned the generation of computer users who have no idea what their computer does when they click on a button.

Yay! Bring on the AOL hate.

If it weren't for AOL, the internet wouldn't have all the idiots it does, and spyware, malware and viruses on Windows wouldn't be so prevalent. There wouldn't be enough stupid people to make it worth the bother of creating these things!

I used to get 8KbPS max on my 56k using certain p2p and stuff, sometimes while downloading from websites, I dont really know how thats possible but somehow it happened.

I once enjoyed 12kb/s in my 56k days for about 3mins

I think you guys are either remembering incorrectly or whatever program you were reading you speeds from was inaccurate. Due to FCC regulations that fastest download speed you could possibly connect at is 53k: 53000bps / 8 / 1024 = 6.5 KB/s max. Of course, in the real world, you're never going to see 6.5 either due to line/signal quality and overhead. 5.X is possible on a solid line with a great connection, 6.X is less likely, and 8-12 KB/s (as some people have quoted here) is simply impossible.

I usually only get 3 KB/s. And I have 56k (Supposedly).

I hate AOL. I want to destroy it. Not only do they give me crap speeds, but they also have a browser that crashes every time I use it, so I have to use Firefox or Opera instead.

You almost make it sound like using Firefox or Opera as an alternative is a bad thing (have to)

you should be getting a max of 7kb/s or so; it's probably your dial-up card or modem, whatever you're using

I do enjoy both Firefox and Opera, but it's a bother running seperate applications because I'm paying for software the freezes my computer. I'd be nice if AOL actually did it's job and stopped making every release worse and worse.

Good point. Does anyone have a clue how bloated AOL's "services" actually are?
