A friend of mine has a psp verison 1.0

Can he upgrade to 3.40 with an easy installer straight away?...or does he need to first upgrade to 1.50 then 3.40?.

He can, but it is recommended to upgrade to 1.50 first if only because installation of CFWs like 3.40 OE-A is tested on 1.50 only.

Also, I recommend using Dark AleX's installer, and not any easy installer, simply because the theoretical risk of bricking is lower. You can get his here.

So yeh I say go to 1.50 and use the normal flashing app but its your call.

You can find the firmware here http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Firmware-1.50-File-(E...d/163/catid/163. I Also suggest going with what dragonKeeper mentioned stick with darkAlex's installer. Avoid other any other installers out there and custom firmwares. Especially from the site i listed in this post.

I did use the easy installer from this site. But it works fine  I must be lucky
