Regarding the shoutcast station list... I've never actually used that before. My usual procedure is to go to icecast.org, and find a station I like there. I booted into Windows so I could see how it worked in Winamp, but I couldn't find it. Can someone tell me where I can find it, so that I can see how hard it would be? (And I think I'll likely have to do some reverse engineering, so I need an app that works with it to start with?

 

Also, if you REALLY want to be helpful... You could give me a list of applications that support the shoutcast directory. (If it's open source and works on Linux, then that would be perfect).

 

And sorry for asking, sgstair, but is there any chance you could give me a rough timeframe on the next wifi library release? It doesn't matter if you are way off again, I would just like something to look forward to. And a rough estimate on how much time I have to make some improvements. (I would like my app to be significantly better by the time the next library release comes around).

 

And a question for the community... Playlist/Shoutcast directory support is the most wanted feature right now? (Aside from sgstair fixing the connection problems)?

As far as getting the shoutcast directory listing up in winamp in windows, just fire up winamp (I'm running version 5.21, but its mostly the same either way), and hit alt+l to bring up the media library. The new winamp has a list of things on the left of the window that opens, and you'll want to select 'online services' and then shoutcast radio. This displays the top whatever stations (the number is configurable in the winamp options somewhere. it can be any number to all of them to be listed). '

 

The slightly odler winamp versions (earlier 5.xx ones) list shoutcast radio differently, but tis still in the media area like I said before, it shouldn't be ahrd to find.

 

As for linux stuff that uses the directory and such, I can't think of anyhthing off the top of my head, I don't think xmms does th same media listing that winamp does, but it does play them the same. I'll look into more stuff like that.

 

Hope thats somewhat helpful. This is something that'd defiantly be sweet to see.

Yeah, followed closely by "higher volume" .. I think it has something to do with the soundchannels.. its only using 2 as for now, right?

I had a brief look at the shoutcast directory in Winamp... and it looks like it would take quite a bit of effort on my part, and that's going to take some time. But consider it officially added to the planned feature list.

I think you should try to get some other way to have users input what stream they want to connect to before you try to get the shoutcast directory working. Perhaps reading a file off of a CF/SD card, or something appended to the nds file.

That's the current plan. I'll make it fancier in future releases, but for the next release, I want at least a bit of playlist support, and that's the easiest solution to implement.

Actually probably not so soon anymore... I've put the code on CVS now so it's more likely I'll just polish it up some more and release later.

Thanks sgstair. I just built Dissonance against the CVS library, and it didn't really help my problems too much, probably due to a generally lousy connection. But if anyone wants to try it, here's a binary (no source, as it's built off of 0.2.1, just a different library).

I'll try to get some work done soon. I've been playing Half-Life the last few days, as Half-Life 2 Episode One comes out soon, and I needed to get my fix in. But I just finished Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force, and Half-Life: Blue Shift in the last week, so I think I'm good now. I'm back in Linux where I belong, and preparing to boost the volume.

It is a Linux program to browse online stream directories, including SHOUTcast. Naturally, it is open source, so you should be pretty useful to look over.

Thanks for the link. I'm doing playlist parsing right now, but when I'm done, I'll see what I can do about the stream directory. I had a look at the screenshots, and that seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

I'm making some progress on playlist support. (Yeah yeah, I know it's not that hard, I've just been lazy, and I've made some absolutely bone-headed mistakes, so really I've just been moving my code around for the last few weeks). At any rate, the next version is likely to include playlist support, by compiling in a playlist at compile time. This should make it fairly easy to change the playlist for the more advanced users. But I also want a fairly robust default playlist. So, does anyone have any suggestions for stations to be included in the default playlist? The only one I really care about is Virgin Radio Classic Rock... so I'll leave it up to the community to decide the remaining stations. Post your response here, or email me at matter.grey@gmail.com.
