Wizard Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Games don't have to be violent to be enjoyable. Hell, I even get kicks out of Super Mario Sunshine and Zelda: Wind Waker, and still a lot of people dismiss these games as being too 'kiddy'. Then again, I just love the heebie-jeebies that the Silent Hill series gives me at 1 am. Kids and young teens are drawn to mature games because they have the "This game has to be cool because I'm not allowed to play this" mentality. Everything the adults and older kids do seems more cool to them.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Damn right nyukka.
heero Posted August 4, 2005 Author Posted August 4, 2005 so then how do you all feel about the raise in the game ratings that people are talking about?
Agozer Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 so then how do you all feel about the raise in the game ratings that people are talking about?Well, if you want my opinion, the whole thing about San Andreas getting an AO rating was useless, since I consider 'M' (16+ or 18+ according to PEGI) to be adults only. All in all, the rantings in the USA go way overboard, but over here, the ratings are damn accurate, and I fully support them. Then again, San Andreas is widely sold here with the old rating, and I haven't even seen the new rating. PEGI doesn't even have a rating past 18+.
heero Posted August 4, 2005 Author Posted August 4, 2005 from what i've heard, UT2007 will have a graphics lock cause of the gory and fighting (I was told this, don't know if true.) so that the blood and fighting can be locked by the parents... even with the expected rating of 18+ i don't think that the game rating will stop the kids under 18 from playing. parents that have no game sence will just go out and buy the game for kids leaving the rating systems with a title of "NO one cares", meaning that no matter what rating they give that games they just don't have the full power yet to stop kids from playing games that are over there rating limit... what you think?
Gryph Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 All the UT games have had an option that let you disable the blood and gore so I don't expect UT2007 to be any different.
suvo Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 i only just realised the "M" rating in America was 17 +. in australia its 15+ and AO which im not to sure on but i dont think game ratings should go up due to people being brainwashed. The parent's should realise or they should controll themself's and give themself a time to play and a time to not...
Agozer Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Well, if the ratings in Australia go hand-in-hand with what we have here, San Andreas has been AO since the begginning, and no one complained. Does australia use PEGI? It's a PAL area after all.
suvo Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 i found out that it was 17+ cause it was on my san andrea's guide book. im crap so i need it agozer i think we use it for some games depends which publisher. but rockstar do not use it for those who want to see PEGI here is a link : http://www.pegi.info/pegi.jsp?language=en&content=pegi
Agozer Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Their site is good in a sense that there's a huge database of games and their ratings. So you're saying that SA actually had 17+ instead of 18+ over there? That's odd.
OverlordMondo Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 (edited) All these ratings are crap. I don't think anyone who actually cares about what their kids do even looks at the ratings. I personally believe that the restrictions on ratings should be removed, all they do is force parents to be with their kids as they buy a game. Desensitization is bullshit, too. What sense are kids losing? I've lost a bit of my eyesight and hearing, but that's it. Games don't remove this "sense" people speak of, as it isn't inate in humans. It's something that has to be taught, and in most cases it just isn't. Edited August 4, 2005 by LordKanti
suvo Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 no one cares about ratings. only strict parents but thats it. i think they should be removed. it is flocking stupid. No one even care's about it do they ? i totaly agree with kanti
Gryph Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 A voluntary non-government controlled ratings system has to exist, of course unless you want the games you play to be heavily monitored by the FCC. Would you rather it be like Australia or Brazil where they ban games? There has to be a ratings system because some games just aren't suitable for everyone. If I had a young kid I wouldn't want him/her to play Manhunt (not because it's a bad game but because of the content). I would not be overly censoring but there are certainly some games that I think some kids should not play.
suvo Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 no not really but they are stupid. i remember gta:vc about 2 years ago (2003). it was on the news. someone at eb sold it to a 10 year old kid and they said some crap that people dont realise who they are selling it to. The guy that worked at Eb got fined and they changed the rating of gta:vc to MA.

These ratings don't keep kids from playing games any more than the games desensitize children. And as long as I'm bitching about crap, the FCC is bullshit, too. It's a free country, and I should be able to read, watch, or play, whatever the flock I want. The entire government is way more controlling than it should be.
Gryph Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 So you think removing the ratings is going to help? You're really an idiot if you believe getting rid of the rating system will fix anything. The ratings system isn't at fault, it's the idiot parents who don't pay attention to the ratings and the retailers who don't enforce it. I would love to live in a world with no censorship but I'm also realistic and don't expect such a thing to ever happen.
