What garbage that we have to keep old Win98 crap around for XP.

 

Well try downloading some form of linux and using that for format, Linux shouldn't give two craps about what forms of windows are on there.

 

Actually see if you can just delete the partitions with the Linux disc, then shut down and go with the XP disc from there. Linux doesn't do NTFS natively so you would have to format as FAT32 which would suck. (No files over 4GB, screw that)

XP Boot disk won't help you here.

 

Downloading FDISK online would still require the proper form of DOS to run it (FDISK will only run in DOS, you'd still need a boot floppy or bootable CD/USB Stick)

 

No, formatting the drive from within Windows is impossible. Windows is running from that drive.

You could try it, but I'm pretty sure the XP boot disks don't contain necessary programs for partitioning/formatting.

Download a Win98 SE Boot Disk, that will have FDISK and FORMAT for sure. Simply create your partition(s) and DON'T format them if you want NTFS (Win98 only supports FAT32, so you'll have to use the XP install CD for NTFS)
