Raine was an excellent emulator back in the day, fast, supported a ton of games, etc. However, it also allowed tons of hacks in the drivers to get speed etc out of them. I think this is a major factor leading to it's downfall. Raine has a very nice license and is open-source though, so modifying it and adding more games, new drivers, etc. is always welcome.
