Scored a very rare 40/40

Final Fantasy XII is just one short week away from release in Japan, and today, the first review scores became public as early copies of this week's issue of Weekly Famitsu, Japan's most well-known gaming magazine, went on sale. The verdict? A perfect score of 40 out of 40.

Although Famitsu isn't especially known for its conservative scores, the multiple reviewer aspect of the cross reviews makes it difficult for games to score perfectly. Only five titles have attained such elite status before: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for Nintendo 64, Soul Calibur, for Dreamcast, Vagrant Story, for PlayStation, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, for GameCube and Nintendogs, for Nintendo DS. Japanese forum-goers have observed that only one perfect review has been given out for each platform to date, and for the past couple of years, many have been predicting that Final Fantasy XII would be "the one."

Each of the four reviewers praised the graphics, scenario and game system extensively, in particular the freshness that the latest entry has brought to the Final Fantasy series. Interestingly enough, this is the second time a Yasumi Matsuno game received a perfect score from Famitsu; he was also the director of the critically-acclaimed PlayStation epic, Vagrant Story. Although he's no longer being credited as the man in charge of Final Fantasy XII, his influence is still very obviously prevalent throughout the game. - 1up

Discuss. Game is set to be released a coming Thursday.

It's also most respected.

All the more reason for me to cough up the dough when the game is eventually released over here.

Well, I have never miss a FF game before since VII (except XI). Might make me buy a PS2 again

Or I might wait for the PC version......

Or can I hope it will be release in the next gen console too?

After FF7, all Final Fantasies have sucked. I really doubt this'll be a whole lot different, especially since basically every Square-Enix game has sucked.

Seven was crap.

Every Final Fantasy game has been good in one way or the other.... Yes, even Mystic Quest.

Mystic Quest = good. The only reason I liked it was because my friend said "Here play this while I go get food."

I played Mystic Quest a long ass time ago, and it was one of the first RPGs I played, so I thought it was good. When I emulate it though, I tend to tape down A and turn speed on while I do something else.

Final Fantasy in general is just too easy. Seven was pretty easy, Eight was easy, Nine was hella easy, Ten was easy, Ten-Two was actually relatively difficult and employed a class system. The first six were all more difficult in the sense that you didn't hit for max damage every hit without exerting any effort to do so. Nine was especially easy given the fact that bosses died in about six hits.

I had no hope for FFXII until hearing this. The character art has been kind of a turn-off, and FFTA was just boring enough that the thematic connection lost my interest completely. (and I loved FFT, btw) Hearing this though, my interest is piqued again.

I love the character art because it reminds me of Vagrant Story.
