  1. I think I'm one of the few people that actually bought my copies of Windows 7
  2. Ever since Cisco took over Linksys, it seems like their products and support haven't been up to par. I have a PCI Gigabit card from them that they decided not to support in Vista. I also have had more reliability issues with their routers. I ended up moving over to D-Link for most of my networking needs since then, so far I've had a good experience.
  3. I actually have pretty fond memories from the old free hosts... namely AngelFire. That is where I started my first site and where I learned HTML. I thought they were a great user-friendly starting point for new users. Unfortunately, all of these services have fallen WAY behind the times and their importance is non-existent. I can respect him for wanting to back up GeoCities though, it's a part of the internet that will be lost forever. At the same time though, I would never expect Yahoo to keep it going indefinitely - I think they picked the right time to kill it off.
  4. You'd be surprised, plated glass can be very sturdy. I would just make sure the metal frame is strong enough not to bend. The only thing that can really break plated glass is a huge amount of force focused in a tiny area.
  5. Good luck with your upgrade. If you have any imaging software on hand, it wouldn't hurt to make a disk image before you do the upgrade. At least that way, if anything really goes south you can roll back to your old OS without any headaches.
  6. You may want to consider a glass-surface desk if you're concerned about the surface. Unfortunately any particleboard desk is going to be really prone to scratches and gashes, my old one looked terrible. Luckily, I managed to keep the scratches to a minimum on this one, but there are still a few here and there.
  7. I don't see a problem with the upgrade versions. Admittedly, the extra install or registry change needed to qualify for it can be a pain, but it's a lot better than paying the full price for it. The only license type I'd avoid are OEM licenses, they technically can't be transfered (ever) to another computer. Knowing how lax Microsoft's activation line is, there's a good chance they'd do it anyway but I would risk over $100 on that.
  8. No idea... but just recently, Obama declared H1N1 a national emergency.
  9. The modular collections are actually designed primarily for office and cubicle use, but due to their flexibility they can be great for a home office/workstation as well. The two desks I have are from this collection. With how many components are available, you can create pretty much anything. Unfortunately, it can be a bit expensive but it's well worth it. The build quality and durability are far above any other desk I've used in the past. When I put together my setup, I opted for something a bit simpler:
  10. It doesn't make sense that they didn't provide the ISO to begin with. The worst part about it is they actually did the same thing with Vista! Nothing looks worse than botching it on day one. You would think they may have learned that by now.
  11. The issue that is coming up is actually related to people trying to unpack the 64-bit media on a 32-bit operating system. The process errors out of the OS you're unpacking on is not 64-bit. I wish they would have distributed it in the form of an ISO, but I didn't have any trouble repacking it into a bootable CD so I'm not too concerned. There's actually no reason to use a pirated disk for the upgrade process, all you have to do is install 7 without a key, then "upgrade" from that installation. This is the same way Vista's upgrade process went. I doubt they will disable it as it's actually Microsoft-sanctioned. It is the only way you can do a clean installation.
  12. For me, it would depend what car... once upon a time, I had to go on a 5 hour ride in the back seat of a Cavalier. I'm pretty tall and the back ceiling of the car wasn't so I ended up bumping my head on the roof every time the car hit a bump in the road. Not an enjoyable experience.
  13. The dumbest thing of all is they actually left a "back door" method of getting around that check. If you install first without a key, you can then launch the installer inside of 7 and "upgrade" the copy you just installed and it will accept the key and activate without any issues. It's like they did this just to annoy their users.
  14. I awoke this morning to find my two Windows 7 keys in my inbox, now I have the fun task of backing up and reinstalling everything. I haven't even installed the OS yet (at least not on real hardware) and I've already found my first annoyance. You can't boot from the CD to do a clean install when you are using an upgrade version - it will refuse to accept the upgrade key. You need to actually launch the installer from an upgrade-eligible OS first. I understand the concept of an upgrade version, but does Microsoft really think no one will be reinstalling at any point? And if they are, doesn't it seem a bit asinine to install and old OS first, just to erase it and install Windows 7? Well, backup has just about finished so it's time to wipe the drive and hope for the best!
  15. Several years back, I actually switched over to using a modular office desk set. I have one 60" desk and an additional 36" desk next to it. I didn't pick up the hutch or any extras because I like having the open space, it allows me to easily re-arrange things as needed. As far as depth goes, you may want to look into a corner desk because those will likely accommodate your CRT best. If you go with a long and straight desk, the CRT can cause it to bow in the middle pretty bad. Chairs can be a little difficult to pick, but a good rule I use when buying them is if you sit down it it and you can feel the board on the bottom, there's not enough padding and it probably isn't worth buying. If the padding is that thin when it new, it will be like you're sitting on a board after a couple of years of use. Unfortunately, that usually rules out most chairs below the $250 range. Other than that, I try to avoid leather as it doesn't breathe and if it's cheap, it will crack and fall apart in a few years. The last piece of advice I would give is to make sure you keep your receipts - most furniture companies give long warranties and will replace any parts that may wear out. I had my desk surface replaced about 5 years after I bought it, and my entire chair (with the exception of the metal base) replaced after 7 years. This can save a fortune down the line.
  16. Honestly, to me Twilight Princess supersedes OOT. In it's day, OOT was a great game and it still is, but for the most part Twilight Princess is the same game except with a massive upgrade in just about every department. Swap the time travel with the twilight, and the games are virtually identical.
  17. You should be fine. I hope everything works out for you emsley!
  18. I was following the series up to now, but I have to admit the whole Heuco Mundo arc is a disaster. I had to stop watching a few weeks back, it was just that bad. For now, I've kind of replaced it with Naruto Shippuden.
  19. The problem for me isn't pixelation, it's the actual pixel grid itself. I have everything laid out in a fashion where I'm pretty close to the TV and if you look at it closely, you can actually see the pixel grid itself against light backgrounds. A 1080p TV would probably fix this, but that's a little too rich for my taste right now.
  20. Unfortunately, that's always the eternal struggle - keeping interest in something you have no interest in whatsoever. Just keep thinking of that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
  21. I would say that Wind Waker has been one of the more underrated games of the franchise. Most people have never played through it or have only gone through once. That might be a good next choice.
  22. That's great... the only real defaced currency I've seen are dollar bills stamped with the "Where's George?" website and I got a quarter once that had a hole shot through it.
  23. Even at that size, you will see pixels at 720p. If I'm not mistaken, on most LCD TVs that resolution is displayed at 1366x768, that resolution is not much higher than the screen of most 15" laptops. When you blow that up to a full 32", there will unfortunately be some unwanted detail. It took me a while to get used to it, but it doesn't bother me much these days. The worst thing is seeing what SD feeds look like on it.
  24. It really depends where you're at. Here in Pittsburgh, IT jobs are pretty abundant and well paying but I've heard from other people that it's next to impossible to find IT jobs in certain cities. The pay scale also varies pretty wildly based on location.
