  2. SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp. Thursday canceled plans to introduce its highest-speed Pentium 4 chip for desktop computers, marking another in a string of unexpected product changes, cancellations and recalls at the world's largest chip maker.

Intel, whose shares fell 2.4 percent, said it plans to move engineers and other resources to accelerate the introduction of "dual core" chips, which contain two microprocessors in a single chip. The Santa Clara, California-based company has said it plans to introduce dual-core chips for desktops, servers and notebooks sometime next year.

"It's not an easy decision to walk away from four gigahertz because we had a public position, but in our view for Intel and for our customers it's the right decision," Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said, referring to the speed of what was to be the fastest Pentium 4.

The product cancellation adds to an already bumpy year for Intel, which delayed a new line of notebook computer chips in January, recalled a desktop computer chip in June, and pushed back another notebook computer chip in July.

  3. WASHINGTON - Medical milestone or privacy invasion? A tiny computer chip approved Wednesday for implantation in a patient’s arm can speed vital information about a patient’s medical history to doctors and hospitals. But critics warn that it could open new ways to imperil the confidentiality of medical records.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that Applied Digital Solutions of Delray Beach, Fla., could market the VeriChip, an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, for medical purposes.

With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches. Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over it.

Think UPC code. The identifier, emblazoned on a food item, brings up its name and price on the cashier’s screen.

  5. PlayStation 3 will support the DTS Coherent Acoustics surround sound, it seems safe to say, after Digital Theater Systems announced that the format will be a mandatory audio technology for the Blu-ray disc medium, which Sony last week confirmed that it plans to use in PlayStation 3 in a read-only format.

Although DTS is probably lesser known than Dolby's Digital and Pro Logic II solutions, it's nevertheless respected in the DVD sector and a number of PS2 games including Grand Theft Auto: Vice City support it, although Pro Logic II now seems to be more prevalent.

Given the rivalry, Dolby is also more or less certain of supporting the Blu-ray disc format - hopefully giving Sony supporters some much needed Dolby Digital 5.1. Whatever happens, PS3 should be well equipped for surround sound options.

Konami announced that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will have a new  "Monkey & Snake" game mode in which Solid Snake will battle the monkeys from Sony's Sarugetchu / Ape Escape. In this game mode Snake receives a request from the radio, commanding him to capture all the monkeys in the stage.

Kojima also mentioned at TGS that he is a big fan of Sarugetchu (Ape Escape). The reason to put the monkeys in the game is because Konami has Sony have reached an agreement so that Solid Snake can show up in the next Sarugetchu game, and in return the monkeys will appear in Metal Gear Solid 3 as well.

  9. New screens of FF:DC..well new to me..
