  1. The XOR tables are a method of encryption used in CPS2 games.

XOR stands for eXclusive OR. This should mean something to those with a bit of experience in electronics or boolean algebra.

Anyway, each game has its own table, so to emulate the game, you have to figure out the table.

The tricky thing there is that these tables are stored in a S-RAM chip, making it very uneasy to read: as soon as you unplug the battery, all the information is lost (at least that's what they think at CPS2Shock).

    From their website:

The CPS-2 game boards are protected by a system that uses encrypted program ROM's. We believe the key data for the decryption of these ROM's is stored in low power S-RAM located inside one of the onboard custom chips. When the game board is switched off or disconnected from the main board, these custom chips are supplied by a 3,6v lithium battery. The average life span of this battery is around five to six years. Once the voltage of this battery is below 2v, the stored encryption key will be lost. The condition of this battery is not measurable due to the fact that lithium batteries will hold their voltage almost constant until the end of their life.

They tried dumping it from working CPS2 boards, but from what they say, all attempts have failed.

I have no idea how they figure out these tables.

I hope that helped you to have an idea of what XOR tables are :D

If it's not clear (and I'm pretty sure it's not :( ) don't hesitate to ask more explainations on a particular point.

I'll help as much as I can :(

  2. Again, COLOR CHANGES are not the same as COMPLETE REDRAWS. So Ryu's headband or hair changing colors is different than Takuma getting a NEW FACE. Even a new face requires more effort than changing a pallette.

Well, after all these well-argued posts, I don't know where I stand on the debate. But on the above matter, I'd just like to point out that both Capcom and SNK have limitations to work with with character redesigns - notably, that the characters still have to LOOK like themselves. AND most of them have trademark characteristics that MUST be adhered to.

Look at Ken from street fighter. He has blonde/red, long hair and his trademark outfit is a red gi. You could change these things but those are the

things that make him Ken. So what is left to change?

I think I get your point.

However, there is much room for changes. I'll take what I think is a good exemple: Terry Bogard.

If you compare the Fatal Fury 1 version and the KOF2002 one, they have the same style, same dressing, and most of the same special moves (although some have been added). But the KOF2002 one has a much much better look. So what did they change? They kept the same character, but changed the sprites. If you compare a child's drawing representing a woman and Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, both represent (mostly) the same thing, but one looks much better than the other :D

So they redrew the sprites to make them look better, they rethought the design of the special moves, and so on. They must also have added frames to have a better animation.

But redrawn characters don't have to have exactly the same style after the redraw. Take Terry in Garou: MOTW. He doesn't have his red cap and jacket anymore and has now "hair in the wind" :P

But he still has his special moves, and everyone recognises him.

So redraws can be original, and don't have to be only sprites smoothing.

By the way, they have to be careful when playing around with the palette. Characters from CTHD2003 look like they come straight from a 70s disco nghtclub

  3. I would NEVER give a cent to sites like LINK DELETED, even if it was legit. Come on, if you have to pay money for a game, at least give it to the game devellopers. I don't blame people downloading roms, I do it myself because I can't buy a 300$ cart.

What this guy does, however, is something else. He takes other people's work and makes money from it. Warez and such things are acceptable for people who can't find or pay for a game, but not to make money. And don't tell me they need money to host the site, these activities are either benevolent or they are SCAMS.

I repeat it, I would rather send bank notes to SNK Playmore in plain mail envelopes (without asking anything in return) than give anything to these guys.

I think this is just a scam for newbies.

  4. To use console mode in MAME you have to do one of these things:

-rename the console bios in neogeo.zip to the name of an arcade bios (aes-bios.bin to sp-s2.sp1 for exemple)

-do the same with the uni-bios and set it to console mode (uni-bios.12)

-use James' build (however I don't know how to enable uni-bios in his build)

-compile your own build (not as difficult as it seems).

I think the kaillera version also has dipswitches added for switching between arcade and console, but I'm not sure about that.

PS: if the MAME team has removed console mode by default, it's because MAME is meant to be an arcade emulator, and console mode is, well, not arcade :D

  5. For those who have a slower PC or are doing heavy things at the same time (well even for everyone), there is an option you should check: Options menu -> Interface options -> Emulation -> High thread priority

I had occasionaly a few dropped frames before checking it, now it's as smooth as possible :P

  6. check this forum...

these guys are going to dump kof2k3...

strange thing this i have never been to that site before but i got this message when i tried to veiw it

    vBulletin Message

Sorry. The administrator has banned your IP address. To contact the administrator click here

If you have a dynamic ip, maybe they banned someone who had it before. Or, more probably they banned a whole provider or geographic region. Also possible is that they use the list from peerguardian and that you accidently got into it...

Anyway I had no problem entering the site.

  7. We can always make this forum just another forum where you have to register to view the board. Of course we won't do it, unless you guys vote for it or something here. As for all the guests, let them browse around, there's about 20-40 new registered members a day anyways.

I hate these forums where you have to register to read a post. When someone posts a link to a good post on one of these, you just end up with the "enter your password" dialog box. :P

What's worst is that you can't know if the board is good before registering (I guess they must have much more members who never post because of that).
