  1. Can I back up anything I want? Norton Internets Security? the downloaded updates (where can I find these by the way?), Downloaded programs, anything?

What classes can I take to learn all this computer stuff. I've heard of IT and IS and A+ but I dont even know what those are or what they teach

Doctorate in Googleogy. That's all you need.

  2. OK, since you have the cable and since it's just two computers.... Here's what you gotta do...

1)Set an IP address for both of those computers.

(The first one can be 192.168.0.1, then the 2nd one is 192.168.0.2)

2)Have the first computer (192.168.0.1) connect to the internet.

3)If you have Windows XP. Enable internet sharing for that Internet connection.

4)Then in the 2nd computer, change the settings as follows :

    DNS SERVER : 192.168.0.1

    Gateway : 192.168.0.1

    I think that's it..... ^^

DNS server should be set to your ISP's DNS server not the NAT gateway, unless of course actually you have a DNS server on it.

  3. I'm gonna start my own website and make it the coolest website in history.

I doubt it, but all the best anyway.

Where could I host it?  Could I host it at home? What options are open to me?

On a dedicated 24/7 server with a fixed IP. Yes, but most consumer broadband plans I know of explicity forbid hosting. Many ISPs block of incoming connections to port 80 (the port which HTTP/WWW uses), so you'll need to seek other (and usually more expensive) plans. Besides self-hosting, you can buy server/hosting space from an ISP and put your stuff. You will typically be given a telnet/ssh account to log into to do your work. Advantage of this is that most of technical and setup details are already taken care of for you. Disadvantage is you have far less control than you would from self-hosting.

In what ways can I construct such a site?

    In order of difficulty (IMO):

    - Pay/seduce/blackmail/indimidate someone to do it for you.

    - Wizard-type tools that guide you through and allow you to choose from some pre-canned designs (eg Wasy Web Editor http://www.easywebeditor.com/)

    - WYIWYG tools like MS front page which allows you to construct a site like a word processor.

    - Manually write HTML.

What languages would I need to know?

    Languages:

This really depends on what you want to do with your site. For a simple website, plain HTML would do. For better visuals, you will need CSS and perhaps some Javascript. But if you need to offer truly dynamic behavior (eg a search function). you'll need to pick up some scripting languages. Popular ones are PHP, Perl, Python, VBScript (ASP). Usually, you will also need to learn some SQL for database manipulation (MySQL is very popular in this area as it integrates very well with PHP). Flash knowledge is also useful for adding fancy (but otherwise almost useless and bandwidth hogging) graphical effects to your page.

What easy-to-use un1337 programs are there?

None that I know of. I guess you will have to learn it the hard way if you want to make it the coolset website in history.

  4. I have to agree with Nintendo here. Do remember that Nintendo is a publically listed company where public opinion could affect its financial performance. Also note that this isn't your avg fan site, but a site which carries controversial material (such that revealing the URL on this board might break regulations, I might add). If some idiotic "concerned parent" decides to make a big fuss over this, it's not going to reflect well on their balance sheets.

So as much as I detest legal suits, I have to go with the big N here.

  5. In addition, you need to configure NAT on the PC to share your internet connection. More info on your networking hardware like the connection type (USB,RJ45 etc), your type of internet access (dialup, broadband) and the software you are using.

  6. when was the last format 3 years ago?

damn, store what you need on some disx and

format the crap out of all those crapwere's

after that u need some kinda protection:

first u need a firewall!!! it's what generally keeps most

    not-so-complex crap outta your system!!!

recommandations: murphy shield, black ice or zone alarm

In case yer wandering I use zone alarm and so far the comps doin' great!!

antiviruses!!! the progs that find, identify, delete viruses(harmfull programs than can come with an email attachment

a bogus install request or p2p downloads)

    recommandations: norton av, bitdefender, rav, and if u got zone alarm security suite u also get an antivirus with it;

spyware/malware hunters: the progs that find, identify, delete

spyware/malware which are progs than generally wanna acces

the internet "behind your back" and send info about your pc

or do some other crap I'm not familiar with"

recommandations: spy sweeper and ad-aware (use both that's what I do)

internet browsers are those programs that... YOU HAVE TO BE flockING KIDDING ME...

recomandatios: STAY THE flock AWAY FROM IE AS IN INTERNET EXPLORER, IT'S THE VERY BEST WAY TO GET YOUR

PC INFECTED WITH LOADS OF CRAP; use Mozzila Firefox or Opera and nothing else!! If u have a slow connection you should use Opera it's faster; both are equaly safe, block popups and bogus program install requests and have downlaod managers...

peer to peer software are... MY FREAKIN' FINGER HURTS, YOU FIGURE IT OUT...

recs.: Bit Torrent, DC++ and KaZaa Lite

RULE nr.1: now, since configuration is the mother of protection, u must configure every single option in them u deem will make your PC safer!!!

    RULE nr.2: update regurarly, every day if u can, so that u will be up-to-date with new bad programs and their signatures/symptomes;

RULE nr.3: Don't press yes everytime you see a window popup outta nowhere...

    RULE nr.4: Don't visit www.download.com

RULE nr.5: Format every six months

RULE nr.6:GET TO WORK U HAVE ALOT TO DO!!!

    that's all, enjoy

Your rules 4 and 5 are absolutely absurd.

  7. why shouldnt one run as an administrator, doesnt running as one give you administrative access persay and let you do more things?

Yes, so does the virii/malware. Go google for "sandboxing" and "principle of least privileges" for details.

And another thing, is it okay for windows components to access the web "behind my back."? Sometimes I get this msg that my firewall has dected a windows component trying to connect to the web, is that okay?

Generally speaking, no. Some sh1t is definitely going on.

And if all that internet security is all jus BS and how they dont really address the root of the problem then what does?

Implementing a proper security policy and actually following it. Sandboxing and least privilege principles are 2 things that such a policy consists of on top of what I mentioned in my earlier post (firewall, patch your machine etc).

Many ignorant people think that security is some super software that you can just install and be done with. The reality is that security is not a product but a set of best practices which users should follow to prevent/reduce their exposure to malicious activities and software.
