R-rated games may be on shelves soon in AU

The most violent video games around could soon be sold in Australia after the Federal Government said it was considering updating the classification system for games to include an R18+ rating.

Unlike films, magazines and other publications, there is no adult classification for games in Australia, so any titles that do not meet the MA15+ standard - such as those with excessive violence or sexual content - are simply banned from sale by the Classification Board.

This could be good news for all you Aussies out there. I think at the age of 18+ you should be able to choose what you want to play. Take religious leaders out of the loop of telling you want you can and can't buy.

Earlier this week it was reported that an upcoming meeting of the state and territory Attorney-Generals on March 28 would be discussing the possibility of changing the video game ratings system. As a result of this change, games would have the ability of being listed under the R18+ rating, instead of being refused classification and sale in Australia, as is currently the case if the game is decided to be beyond an MA15+ rating.

Hopes that this change would come about seem to have been dashed, however, with South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson's office confirming his unchanged stance on the issue. "The Attorney-General remains very firmly opposed to introducing an R rating for computer games in Australia," said a spokesperson.

The spokesperson then commented that Minister Atkinson "doubts whether any safeguards could be put in place to deter young people, who after all (are) the most computer literate and savvy in our society, from being able to access material," saying that he would not consider the decision even if protective measures are put in place preventing exposure of the content to people under 18.

That might happen sooner than expected, at least if an interview conducted by EuroGamer is to be believed.
