Terrorists fail to recreate a bigger disaster than 9/11

LONDON - British authorities said Thursday they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in carry-on luggage. Security was raised to its highest level in Britain, and carry-on luggage was banned on all flights. Huge crowds backed up at London's Heathrow airport as officials searching for explosives barred nearly every form of liquid outside of baby formula.

U.S.

Homeland Security Secretary

Michael Chertoff said the terrorists planned to use liquid explosives disguised as beverages and other common products and set them off with detonators disguised as electronic devices.

The extreme measures at a major international aviation hub sent ripples throughout the world. Heathrow was closed to most flights from Europe, and British Airways canceled all its flights between the airport and points in Britain, Europe and Libya. Numerous flights from U.S. cities to Britain were canceled.

Washington raised its threat alert to its highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States amid fears the plot had not been completely crushed. The alert for all flights coming or going from the United States was also raised slightly.

Two U.S. counterterrorism officials said the terrorists had targeted United, American and Continental airlines. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

Police arrested 21 people, saying they were confident they captured the main suspects in what U.S. officials said was a plot in its final phases that had all the earmarks of an al-Qaida operation.

A U.S. intelligence official said the plotters had hoped to target flights to major airports in New York, Washington and California.

British Home Secretary John Reid said the 21 people were arrested in London, its suburbs and Birmingham following a lengthy investigation, including the alleged "main players" in the plot. Searches continued in a number of locations.

The British Broadcasting Corp. said police were evacuating homes in High Wycombe, a town 30 miles northwest of London, near one of the houses being searched. Police refused to confirm the report or to discuss any details of the searches.

These sons of bitches never give up. The battle versus good and evil has never been so fierce. It's getting riskier and the more advanced these terrorists become over the years, the more chances they'll finally have to get a hold of a nuke.

It just astonishes me how they really thought they could get a hold of a bunch planes and blow them up over the atlantic. It just goes to show that they are still very stupid as well. You'd think they'd learn their lesson after 9/11, but no... they had to try again. :D

Have fun in hell, or if you believe in nature, you can be a good fertilizer for plants.

This is all fake like 9/11 was fake. Try terror storm and loose change on google video.

Just like there was no plane that hit the pentagon, but it was an alien ship that threw a torpedo. Oh and what proves it the best is how 9/11 is so neatly illustrated on the $20 dollar bill. Oh wait, it could be the aliens who did it. :P

It's either coincidence or utter crap. I don't believe it and probably never will. :D

The battle versus good and evil has never been so fierce.

Oh, come on. Do you really believe there's a "good" side?

Do you really think foreign policy has nothing to do with this? It's a battle between two different kinds of evil.

While all of us would certainly love to live in a manichean world, we don't. There are no things as simple as a battle between "good and evil". Unfortunately, we are usually confronted to one side's point of view and have rarely the opportunity to see one of the many other points of view.

Discluding all the politics and governments that exist today, I do believe there is a good and evil. There will forever be people who like to destroy whatever necessary to pleasure themselves. Sure, it deals a lot with the person's perception on what they believe. However, no matter what, you'll always see who's on the good side and who's on the bad side. In the end, this will end up to become a widely populated agreement (TERRORISTS = BAD, COUNTER-TERRORISTS = GOOD) and that's how humans perceive reality (like sheep). So you indeed can call me a sheep, but I just agree with it.

It kinda sucks that there's those types of people that exist in the world. People have the right to be even more scared and demand even more security. Heck, I would feel a little more secure knowing it'll be a bit harder for people to be making a liquid explosive on board the airplane. But then again, these people will always try something more drastic and/or discreet later.
