No more E3?

Today, the plot thickened, as both Next Generation and GameSpot are reporting that the event will no longer exist at all in its current form. Next Generation, currently running the headline "EXCLUSIVE: E3 FINISHED," claims that the ESA's Doug Lowenstein will announce within 48 hours that E3 has been cancelled for 2007 and beyond. "The days of an industry event attended by all the major publishers, spending big money, are gone," reads the article. GameSpot reports that there may be a smaller industry event around the same time as E3, though it will not be held in E3's traditional home base, the Los Angeles Convention Center. Such an event would support hundreds rather than thousands of attendees, and would be a more subdued preview event rather than a full-blown three-day industry party. GameSpot claims that the ESA will make its announcement tomorrow.

Although I've enjoyed the stuff that comes out of E3, I always felt it was a real resources drain on developers and publishers. Not to mention that most of the people who attend the show have no business being there. Hopefully a smaller, more focused trade show will arise just for business dealings and instead of only showing the press the games, they'll just release it straight to us, the gamers, instead.

E3 was where most of the gaming news for the year or beyond was announced, it was very important and got alot of people interested in alot of new games

this is horrible :)

The real announcement is probably going to be something stupid like OMG IT WILL BE IN NYC NOW!!! and they made it sound this was to get more publicity/hype

Don't need a multi million dollar show to let gamers know whats coming. E3 was nothing but a huge waste of money and time that could be better spent actually doing things for gamers.

Like Gryph said, most people that attend the shows don't even belong there. Trade shows are for people directly involved in the trade.

What do you need E3 for? Developers don't need to show off their wares to anyone but gamers.

I say move back to Atlanta. The smaller place will benfit from it to focus on being on a more "trade" than what it currently is.

E3 as we know it effectivly dead. No more big show. Just a bunch of behind the door meetings in hotel conference rooms. Atleast the three major companies will still have their big pre-show conferences.
