When i go to run and type REGEDIT and try to access it. A black DOS box appears called C:\WINDOWS\System32\regedit.com.

And another little box appears in front of it with the message

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

CS:8800 IP:bc16 OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I click 'close' and the whole thing just disappears.I can't bring up REGEDIT anymore.

Can anybody help me restore REGEDIT?.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I did some searching and this is what I came accross after about 20 minutes.

1.

I have encountered this problem before also and i have handled it by changing the memory model from huge to large memory model and then i was able to execute my program.

2.

Have you tried a repair install of windows?

3. O and of course, my favorite, microsofts reponse to the error

Retry the operation. If you still get this message, try to continue. If you are able to continue, you might want to check the results of the running application. Otherwise, terminate the application, then restart it. If you still get this message, contact your technical support group or the supplier of the running application.

O and gryph, I came accross another forums with a report. Someone replied by telling him to move some files around to make the program work better, and no more replys after that. It was a different program though same error.

Edit: Didn't know my sister's account was still loged on....

regedit.exe is the real one, regedt32.exe is the one with security applied.

By someone adding a regedit.com, the system will try to run it instead of regedit.exe

If Bo0 had typed in regedit.exe instead of regedit it would have worked.
