Dang. How did this happen?

There was a 9.0 magnitude underwater earthquake in the Indian Ocean that caused this.

What's 9.0? How strong is that?

9.0 is VERY strong. It's out of a 10 scale so try to imagine an earthquake that is almost highest possible.

Check the table here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale

Dang, so something so great just happened without warnning?

Yes. One little buoy could of saved hundreds of lives. But knowing the history over there of hurricanes, tropical storms, tsunamis and freak waves, there wasn't any major reason to put one there.

Dude, their lives are ruined and all you're thinking about reduced resource consumption?

There are many bed effects because of this. Crops and fishing piers and other buildings0 are ruined which means people's livelihoods are gone which will affect each country's economy. People are homeless so reconstruction will take a lot of money. Everything affects everything.

Bed effects? Get some sleep. :)

Alot of these people lived in poor countries so it's not like they were using stuff abundantly.

Now THAT'S positive thinking. The thought comes rather easily after someone says it. There's always that good part about something you don't want to admit. It's the cycle of things. People died, but there's no point in crying about it. That doesn't really help anyone. You've gotta get in there and clean up the mess, then try to prevent it from happening again.

I personally feel that this world is far too unstable for us to live on. All these earthquakes, and tornadoes, and weather, it's like we don't have any control on the situation at all.

We need to take earth, and rebuild it, into a more stable, and convenient, structure. Certain religions and countries wouldn't allow that though... So...

We must form a world government! With the world united it would be much easier to perform large scale actions like that. Anyone who doesn't join us get's killed. Anyone who attempts to stop the killing gets killed. To advance society certain sacrifices must be made. It's my job to find people willing to make those sacrifices. It's the people's job to hope that there aren't many to make.

It will only happen when aliens attack Earth. If not, the world will not be united :)

Jokes aside, my country has suspended any New Year Celebration this year in respect of the tsunami victims. And I really support this

Lots of Scandinavians are missing... Our national Bureau of Investigation has released a list containing the names of 198 reportedly missing so far. Still the real number could very well be double that.

I've even seen this one picture on the local papers where a tourist snapped a picture just seconds before the big wave hit; people are still just sitting there or looking at the oncoming wave.

So sad.
