Will the PSP's run a 16gb sony memory stick? If so which custom firmware allows it? Does it matter?

[PSP with 1.50 firmware]

I have a PSP with firmware 1.50. My question is should I leave it at 1.50 or upgrade it to a custom firmware? What would anyone suggest? I am all new to this. If I should upgrade it to a custom firmware which one do you recommend?
