  1. that is good to know..... but I also heard Sony strong armed reviewers into not mentioning load times or cut scenes...

Inky, please try and get the facts straight before posting. You may confuse others and then the false reports would flare up all over again. Albeit probably just in these forums.

what facts did I get wrong? I had read on joystiq about the 90 minute cut scenes. I haven't seen any update on that but I am taking BKs word cuz he hasn't ever steered me wrong before. mgs2 came to the original xbox about a year later. so it was konomi that strong armed reviewers not sony? OK its still misleading. I can understand if they say ; don't talk about this gameplay element or the bosses' they don't want to spoil. but not talking about load times, install times, and cut scene length is just hiding negatives. Like I said this is probably gonna be a must play for this generation. but the underhandedness going on is despicable. a reviewer shouldn't be pushed around by the devs. EVER.

Konami isn't forcing reviewers to do anything. They mainly wanted reviews to be as spoiler free as possible before launch. These reviewers didn't have to play the game and sign the contract, they could have easily said no until launch date but alas, everyone wants to get to the punch.

Problem is, the punch will be the same across the board. Talking about the same things people hated or loved. So really, it is best to wait until 6/12 to submit the review, because then the whole of a reviewers opinion gets out.

So you can think negatively all you want about it, but it's Konami's game and they're going to handle it whatever way they see fit.

As a matter of fact, here's an update:

Apparently, there's been some controversy surrounding the restrictions that Kojima Productions imposed on Metal Gear Solid 4 reviews. Remember when EGM didn't want to review the game because of these limitations? Ryan Payton contacted Kotaku to clarify the dev team's stand on why they had to give a leash on these reviews.

The long and short of Payton's explanation is that basically all they were trying to do is to protect the gamer's experience and hope that spoilers aren't unintentionally leaked by the reviewer. So for Kojima Studios, imposing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) on these reviewers was the way to go.

Now the NDA was only for certain specific aspects of the game. Reviewers were asked to avoid spilling details about the technical side of things, listed by Ryan Payton as the following:

    1. Install times

    2. Length of cutscenes (the ending in particular)

    3. Number of environments

    4. Opening "movie"

    5. Product placement

    6. (Plus a half dozen story-specific items)

Looking at this list now, Payton says that it's actually a bit outdated and that he's able to clarify/confirm some of them. One of which is item #1 on the list. He says that MGS4 will have an 8-minute install requirement, and a couple of 2- to 3-minute installs between acts. Payton goes on clarifying more items on the list with the following (as emailed to Kotaku):

As for the cutscenes, reviewers are more than happy to comment on whether they're too long or short. We simply want reviewers to refrain from describing which scenes are long, thus spoiling some of the experience because players will know what to expect when a scene is unfolding.

I want to make it clear that, from today, reviewers are welcome to discuss the length of the cutscenes and install times, but we ask that they not get too specific about the cinematic times and what happens in later install sequences...

But as for the next three items, we are still asking reviewers to avoid these topics. We want the opening to be a huge surprise for gamers, and knowing how many environments there are in the game, obviously, is a spoiler. These restrictions will remain in place.

Finally, we've asked reviewers to not write about some of the product placement because of some contractual agreements we have with third parties.

Makes sense. Some technical details could, after all, end up spoiler certain key elements in the game.

Psycho Mantis - Metal Gear Solid - Image 1Say, if someone reviewing MGS on the PSOne said "there's a boss in the game wherein you have to switch your controller into another port," that'd basically rob you off of some gaming experience right there (given of course that you haven't played MGS - good god, where've you been?). Well, the Psycho Mantis bit isn't so much as a story spoiler, but more a gaming experience spoiler.

So if you think about it, the gag orders for MGS4 reviews are indeed for your protection. And in case you find yourself doing your own review and maybe posting it on your blog or whatnot, it might pay to also keep yourself in check when spilling some details.

  2. I don't know.... this seems like one of those must play titles but some of the stuff I hear makes me think twice. and is any one game worth 500USD? I don't think so.. I'm sure it will release on 360 in a year or so. I'll prolly just wait.

You sounded rational until you said it might be coming to the 360.

like BK stated, MGS2 was ported about a year later. almost nothing stays exclusive these days. except first party titles.

Speculation is null at this point. Kojima and Konami have already stated that MGS4 is and always will be a PS3 exclusive. I don't know if Sony paid for this or not, but facts are facts.

  3. that is good to know..... but I also heard Sony strong armed reviewers into not mentioning load times or cut scenes...

Konami actually gave a list of things they could not mention if a reviewer wanted to post their review before 6/12. Most gamers look at the final score anyways. But it would be nice to know the whole opinion of a review so I'm mainly going to read the reviews after the embargo is lifted.

Inky, please try and get the facts straight before posting. You may confuse others and then the false reports would flare up all over again. Albeit probably just in these forums.

  5. I just listened to the track 'Metal Gear Saga' from the OST. I want this game. Hell. I have a feeling I'm going to do something stupid on June 12.

Like... get the Metal Gear Solid bundle? Best Buy will honor the wal-mart deal, you should go there and get the $100 gift card!

  6. You know, offering little things like that is what Live does for free already (the only exception being beta invitations) with Live-Silver.

Live = Pay to play online, get little things like trailers, interivews and such for free.

PSN = Free to play, but get all of the little things like for a dollar or so.

If you want to comment on Qore, do so, but you haven't been on PSN throughout it's lifespan. I've had making ofs, developer interviews, trailers, demos, betas, wallpapers, themes for free and for a very very long time now. Qore really is just an online magazine of sorts. They'll get content earlier, and probably trailers for games you won't even care for. The only reason I would get it is if a good beta is on it.

  7. But what I'm afriad of is that Sony isn't going to pull a Nintendo suddenly where every first and second party title is a title worth having. Like I said, even with it's technological leap, the first game still recieved hate to the hype. It did not live up to what it was suppose to be. Sony's first and second party franchises are medicore at best with only a few titles worthy of having.

I am still highly skeptical that they've eliminated loadings completely. Cell is a powerful PowerPC processor, but it is still difficult to program for with it's processing order.

(Still haven't played Uncharted, no PS3 to borrow and no one has the game)

I own uncharted. There is a 30 second load in the beginning, after that you don't see a single load screen. i thought it was loading while the FMV's were going but you can skip them totally and not a hitch. From what I see the only time you may see loading is when drake walks from a huge underground area into the light, which takes all of 3 seconds.

The hard drive is used, but it's only to cache data. Nothing needs to be installed. That all said, just play the game. Let me know what you think about the presentation, story... everything. it really is an amazng game.

  8. There is also the problem of PS3's list of games that are hit or miss (Thus far, until the release of MGS4). Only a few titles are the on the "must have" lists (This list is more or less MGS4 + FF13's core title, not any of it's spin-offs, the majority of gamers seem to want those 2 more so then any other title). Even if Resistance 2 possible use of streaming data instead of loading everything to ram (How the hell is that gonna happen? Considering a PS3's blu-ray drive is only 2x, while those of us with Blu-Ray players will see an increase in drive speed while those on PS3s will most likely be stuck on 2x blu-ray drives for years to come), the first title, while it made some people's top 10 lists, it still too alot of flack for being too generic and boring on setting, and not offering anything unique in terms of gameplay. Which is, as many people know, a difficult formula to get in FPS games. I do agree that the setting, levels and everything else is generic and not very inspiring. For the life of me, CANNOT get into Resistance at all. I'm a heavy FPS nut as well, and I cannot get into Resistance. As much as I love the idea of WW2 cut short because of an alien invasion as it reminds me alot of some books I've read previously. Dream on paper, but fails at reality (Reality being the game).

In a recent live interview with Ted Price, president of Insomniac Games, all new details were revealed on their upcoming PS3 exclusive FPS, Resistance 2. In order to cover all the details that were given in the interview, we'll summarize it into a quick list, and for those of you who want to read more, click here for Eurogamer's interview.

    New Resistance 2 Details:

    - Intel Documents will be back expanding the franchise's lore

    - More of Hale's background revealed and general history in the game's in-game story as well as the cinematics

    - Co-op campaign will also help to flesh out the world with its separate story, although expect no big cinematics

    - Many new weapons available in Resistance 2, mini-gun and marksman only ones revealed so far

    - Streaming hi-res textures, detail maps, new lighting system, new effects system, better normal mapping, better specular response, redone shaders and lots of behind-the-scenes stuff

    - NO LOAD TIMES!

    - Bigger "levels" and "chapters"

    - Resistance 2 will run in 720p at 30fps

    - Resistance 2 will feature Trophy and Home support

    - Great improvements coming to the PSN

    - Resistance 2 to be as long or longer than Resistance FOM

From the sound of it, Resistance 2 is shaping up to be one spectacular sequel. Stay tuned for more information.

It's a non-traditional way of processing. Seeing as the Cell is really fast and great at multitasking (if programed for correctly) they are able to do this. If you've ever played Uncharted: Drakes Fortune you'd see how much this feature is utilized.

The game engine really needs to be built from the ground up to take full advantage of streaming I believe.

  9. I meant to say 6 months but MGS4 is really all that's that big. Is FFXIII even coming this year in English? GT5 is another good one but that's not a 2008 title either. Also I dunno how or why they hype Killzone 2 up when Killzone 1 was such a bomb.

That said, the 360 doesn't have any AAA exclusives left this year either does it?

Umm, Fable 2. The first one got high praise so I would expect it from the second one as well. I know there are more, like Halo Wars, but most are new IP's starting.

PS3 has Resistance 2 at the end of the year. Which is touted to take great advantage of the PS3's capability to stream textures instead of load everything in RAM. I loved the first one, but as I stated previously, unless you have a PS3 and played it, it's not a big deal to you.

FFXIII is something of an enigma. I really can't tell you when it's supposed to come out. I hear Squenix wants a worldwide release, then I hear they aren't doing that. I know Vs. XIII is definitely coming out in 2009 as opposed to 2008.

  10. Personally I've had PlayStation branded machines for more than the last 10 years. I ignored the 360 for almost 2 years just because I was waiting for the PS3 to pick up its games, drop its price and all that. But it didn't.

I don't hate on the machine so much as I'm disappointed with it. I'd love to play MGS4 and Tekken 6 and I'd love Sony to do something to help convince me to buy the thing. That's why it annoys me everytime its complex innards result in a game being delayed or running worse than on the 360, and everytime something like Home or the XMB gets talked up when its still playing catchup in terms of functionality.

So yeh I'm platform agnostic and would like to own both. The problem is whenever one of these topics comes up, it is just so much easier to take the 360's side- right now it is just wiping the floor with the PS3 in every regard. Let's see if that changes in the next 3 months.

It'll take more than 3 months I think. Sure Sony's online is getting better, but MGS4 is the only blockbuster until years end. And I'm pretty sure all the games coming out at the end of this year a non-PS3 gamer won't be interested in.

When the Final Fantasy's come out and maybe Killzone 2, maybe, then I think the PS3 will pick up some steam.

  11. BlackKnight, I call a truce. I admit the 360 in itself is a great gaming console. It's got power, a great online service, and enough games to go against any competitor.

That being said, I still have my gripes with the company, but not the console. Actually, I have never hated any console released (except the virtual boy), just the stupid decisions companies make. I don't like how microsoft rushed the 360 into production. Hell, if they made a better, solid version of the original xbox I would have bought it.

But they didn't, which is why i bought a PS3 because of the possibilities. I know Sony has it's faults, trust me I hate waiting for games, online services, promises to come true. I hate it all. But I chose what i chose and I'll respect your choice as well.

So I'm going to stop being the typical fanboy.

    Nuff' said.

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/03/...th-playstation/

I saw a video of it and it looks neat. I'll only get an episode when i know something good will be in it though.

  13. lol. I neither like nor dislike the PS3. I don't get why a game that is padded out with so many cut scenes is being touted as the best thing since sliced bread, and a PS3 showpiece?

If I wanted 'brilliant directing' I'd watch Heat. I prefer games to focus on 'brilliant gameplay' instead.

I love the MGS story, but as for how it is directed, the long, sloppy indulgent crap that passes for Kojima's 'direction' would never make its way film.

And why is it the almighty PS3 showcase? Because the PS3 has nothing else.

    xbots

Can you please stop using this word at the mention of any PS3 criticism, please?

Anyone can find fault in any game. Halo sucks because it's unoriginal. Bioshock sucks because it's too dark and not enough plasmids. Mass Effect sucks because the loading times are horrible. GTA sucks because it has drunk driving in it.

See, I can point out things I don't like about games too. Doesn't mean all aren't great games. Well except Halo. That just really didn't do it for me.

And why can't I use that word? Xbot.

  14. NEARING the quality of Microsoft's Xbox Live.

good job sony, it only a year and a half to NEARLY catch up. pfft.

And neither an In-game XMB nor unified friends lists do Xbox Lives make :banghead:

    Sony, online, isn't even close.

Damn xbots, go and enjoy your RROD.

lol I completely enjoyed my RRoD for the 20 minutes I had it before I fixed it with literally 9 cents.

I'll be honest.. I almost bought a PS3 today at Costco.... but I couldn't think of one game I wanted to play on it.

I would say MGS4.... but I hear its 50% cutscenes...... no thanks.

It's the same as any MGS game. Story loaded cutscenes you can't understand half the time, and brilliant directing. If you didn't like any previous MGS you probably won't like this one.

Sorry for snapping, but I don't go into the 360 forum with bad news and 'lol' everywhere. It seems when I have good news about the system, people just come in here and bash it. It's the PS3 forum, for PS3 people. If you don't like the system get out.

  15. I wonder will Spider Man 3 come with this too.

I don't know if they put that in the Playstation 3 box anymore.

    MGS4 PS3 + Free $100 Gift Card - Wal-Mart or Best Buy

    Apparently that's what Joystiq says.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/wal-mart...h-ps3-purchase/

"between June 1-7 Wal-Mart stores will give a $100 gift card to customers who purchase a PS3. The interesting part is that the following week, June 8 - 15, many Blu-ray players will offer the $100 gift card, and this apparently also includes the PS3."

"The kicker here is if you're looking to pick up a PS3 with your purchase of Metal Gear Solid 4, the smart money would be to pick up the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle available June 12 because you'll get a $100 gift card out of the deal"

Let's see... Premium PS3.. check. Amazing game... check. $100 Gift Card...! WTF!!!! Check. :(

Apparently Best Buy will also be honoring this deal, just bring it up to them before purchasing.

I created this thread in the PS3 section... where it really should be. Anyways, no the Spider Man 3 movie stopped coming with PS3's last year sometime. But if you get this on the 12th you get MGS4 and a $100 GC. Anyone thinking of getting a PS3... this is the deal you've been waiting for.

Also, read in the PS3 section that in game XMB is due to arrive between the 10th and 12th of June.

  16. [uPDATE] In-game XMB coming June 10?

Posted on June 1st, 2008 at 00:31 EDT

Earlier this month we reported that trophies would be coming to the PlayStation 3 in the next system update, firmware 2.4. Recently other news outlets have been reporting similar tips, stating that not only will trophies be available, but full in-game XMB and use of custom in-game soundtracks.

According to Gaming-Age.com, PS3 users can expect such features as universal friends lists and in-game messaging. Also it's been confirmed that Sony already has a title with trophy support on the way. Sony's Official PlayStation website for upcoming Pixeljunk title, PixelJunk™ Eden, has been listed to support the new trophy system.

"The SDK 2.40 will be available to dev. late in June. The actual Firmware 2.40 might see the light of day a lot sooner (my personal guess would be launch aligned or slightly before MGS4 )." - stated PSU’s forum insider.

Also with the addition of improved Audio/Video communication, it's safe to say Sony is finally providing it's users with a better online community, nearing the quality of Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Stay tuned to PSU.com for more information.

    UPDATE:

Videogaming247 has obtained some new tidbits of information regarding the above story.

-Sony is currently shifting through the PlayStation 3's library of games in order to see if the XMB is fully compatible or not. It is expected the new menu system, in-game messaging etc will function in all games, though the current black menu screen will likely be retained for the majority of titles.

-User music is only included in new development tools, which have only just been distributed to coders. Therefore, existing games won't utilize the feature unless they are patched to do so.

-The same applies to the new trophy system; developers have only just obtained the tools necessary to input the feature into their software, so it'll be a while until they show up in games.

-Some elements of the XMB won't be usable in-game until after the next firmware update, such as the photo viewer.

    UPDATE #2:

According to PlayStationLifestyle.net, Sony plans to release firmware 2.4 on June 10, two days prior to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. This would make sense as we have already stated that the firmware update was planned to arrive around the same time as the launch of MGS4.

Guess what? That's right, Sony's actually trying to be a good company and come out with features we need. Thanks Sony, I'll give praise on June 10th.

Let's see... Premium PS3.. check. Amazing game... check. $100 Gift Card...! WTF!!!! Check. :(

Apparently Best Buy will also be honoring this deal, just bring it up to them before purchasing.

  18. English (United States) by default.

I never really noticed it underlining words as my monitor resolution is set to 1920x1080. Plus my myopia doesn't help either :)

    ** Moderately OT **

For those interested, to change dictionary go here to download the pack for your language/region.

I could only find dictionary addons, not the standalone *.dic files. If you want rid of the addon though you can go here - C:\Documents and Settings\*You*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxx.default\extensions

Your dictionary addon will be in there. Poke around the folders and you will find the *.dic and *.aff files corresponding to your choice eg. en-GB.

Now copy those 2 files over to - C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\dictionaries - and uninstall the addon. Now type about:config in the address bar and navigate to the entry 'spellchecker.dictionary' and modify it to match your choice eg. en-AU. That's that!

    Thank you Gavin!

  19. I haven't heard a damn thing on this since it's "beta" release. It was looking so good too.

Too bad Firefox doesn't do much for your sh!tty grammar. 'Its' lacks the apostrophe of possession, because 'it's' literally means 'it is'.

lol! I typed that because when I spell something wrong, firefox let's me know by putting a red line underneath it.

Here again. Let us? Someone who apparently missed out on grade school should be a tad nicer, don't you think?

Also beta should only have one set of quotation marks; 'beta'. Doubles are meant for direct quotes, not implied paraphrases, which is how you used the word just then.

Try being less pompous and critical next time. This is the internet ffs.

Wow... I just got my ass handed to me.

    *bows*

  20. Armour breakable?!? Wow, that seems good.

And Vader is such a badass. Damn, i want him more now. Really really hoping it will be for DLC on X360.

Don't set your hopes to high, an exclusive is an exclusive. They're selling points for the consumer. So if I wanted Yoda, I'd have to get it for 360, same for PS3. So if people want both characters, they have to get both versions.

See how that'll sell more copies then?

  21. I think I will try it, just to supprise my freind with a new ps3 look.

Doesn't anyone use Firefox? It has an automatic spell check in it...

I haven't heard a damn thing on this since it's "beta" release. It was looking so good too.

    nobody likes a spelling fairy.

Not everyones first or second language is English :)

    que ?

lol! I typed that because when I spell something wrong, firefox let's me know by putting a red line underneath it.

  22. this is definatly going to turn into 360vps3 thread again.

is there going to be an arcade release of this?

None announced, but there will probably be one 6 months afterward.

It's not even finished yet! Besides, I'm sure the game would be delayed if Namco wasn't satisfied. But a little slowdown can probably be fixed in a few weeks.

I hate vs. threads, especially when the game isn't even finished...

It's a news thread, punk. And if a little slowdown could be fixed in a few weeks, we wouldn't have had the PS3 Orange Box a month late and still terrible.

Anyway, here's a vid of Vader, in HD. He's still one good thing the PS3 has under its belt, even if only for a limited time.

And what do you mean limited time? 360 has Yoda, PS3 has Vader. Live with it and stop being an xbot.

I mean those exclusive characters and more 'guest characters' will come as DLC to both systems down the track. Why getting so touchy? Feeling that without Vader you're going to have a tougher time justifying that massive brick of a purchase? PS3 will have MGS4 and little else. Live with that.

This wasn't a fanboy thread, but you PS3 campers sure get upset easily.

yeah, stop hating on the PS3. >.<

Where's the hate? Did I make this up, or sneak into the Namco offices and sabotage the PS3 port? I'm as surprised as anyone else at this and just reporting the news. Sheesh. Get lives.

Well, BK is our resident cranky old man / bitcher...

    That hurts Agozer :)

    K. EA ported the Orange Box, not Valve. That's why it was late. People who didn't even make the damn game had to deal with the port... and it's EA...

The PS3 is getting a lot more than just MGS4. Just because we have to wait doesn't mean we're not getting it. The way you say things makes the PS3 sound like it's a crappy console.

Here's my opinion of a crappy console:

33% Failure Rate - I like to be secure in my purchase and not play russian roulette at the check out counter.

Pay for Online - I'm already paying my cable modem bill, why more?

No Standard HDD - Sure, we get installations, but we also get faster loading and streamable games. Got that? Nope.

No Wi-Fi?!?! - No need to say a word.

No HD out of the box - Buy a blu-ray player, you'll like the quality. Oh wait, buy a PS3.

Bottom line is, I do not go around defending the PS3 until some asswipe comes out and acts all fanboy on a general game site. You should be ashamed of yourself for blindly screwing bill gates up the ass with your wallet.

I'll enjoy SCIV on my PS3. As well as playing Vader EXCLUSIVELY. Get that, know what it means, it means it's not going to the 360. I'd love to have Yoda flipping around all over the place, but I know what the word exclusive means.
