PC Engine CD - Japanese List Request

PhilExile

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm make new rips to replace the ones that were in the XTRAS because they had a low bitrate 128kb and were named in the generic way so they had to be in folders - making it difficult scrolling through the games. The new set will be at 320kb and will have the proper naming convention. This will make it possible through the Xport/Madbmab emulator to only see cues - which will make browsing and selecting a game less cumbersome.

I'm putting out a call for Japanese PC ENGINE CD game recommendations that were not included in the XTRAS. There were a lot in there, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything missing before I begin. I'm NOT looking for:

- Untranslated Japanese RPGs that an English speaker couldn't play

- Games that have a US release

I am looking for:

- Awesome SHMUPS

- Action games

- Weird games that are playable - aka - Japanese language not required

Thanks in advance!

battlefield94tokyo.JPG

Bazaru1.JPG

Bazaru Degozaru no Game Degozar

An interesting puzzle game. It's kinda like Lemmings. Your goal is to guide a monkey through obstacles to reach the finish. The catch is, you do not control the monkey at all! At the beginning of each level, you are presented a number of actions the monkey can take. The order in which the actions take place is all up to you. You're free to scroll the camera right to explore the entire level. After selecting the actions, the monkey will start walking to the right non-stop. When he encounters a [ ! ] sign, the first chosen action is performed. The second [ ! ] sign he encounters will make him perform the second action. by selecting in advance the correct actions, the monkey will reach the finish avoiding all enemies and hazards. Pick incorrectly, and he'll get stuck or killed. Depending on how well you did, you will earn money which you can use to purchase different types furniture for your house as decoration.

Browning.JPG

Browning

An unforgiving very hard mech action game.

CDdenjinrockabilly.JPG

CD Denjin Rockabilly Tengoku

US release title: Super Air Zonk - Rockabilly Paradise

Zonk's design is that of a cybernetic Bonk the caveman. This horizontal shoot'em up can be considered a cute'em up. Character designs are all colorful and cartoonie. You have friends that you rescue and assist you with extra firepower or merge with you which makes you transform into a vehicle of sort, a helicopter or battleship or sattelite and many more.

Chouaniki.JPG

Chou Aniki

The first Cho Aniki game. Good thing the sequels didn't use small sprites like this one.

Macross2036A.JPG

Choujikuu Yousai Macross 2036

The game plays like the U.N. Squadrion on the SNES / Carrier Air Wing on arcade. You get EXP destroying the enemy and use that to buy a subweapon. But unlike the aformentioned games, you have unlimited use of it, it just uses a gauge to show you how many times you can use it before the gauge fills up. (It goes back down slowly). You can't transform during the game and in boss battles you automatically stay into Battroid mode. But the game is still great because it's fast paced, has excellent audio music and has anime cutscenes between the levels.

Colorwars.JPG

Color Wars

It's Reversi / Othello but in 3D and with multiple players. Only master puzzle gamers need apply. You can rotate the view around to help you view the area with better precision.

Cottonu.JPG

Cotton - Fantastic Night Dreams

An evil mist covered the entire world in darkness. A selfish witch named Cotton comes upon a fairy crying in the woods. Cotton doesn't care that the world is covered in darkness. The only thing she wants is to eat Willows. So the fairy tricks cotton to rid the world of the evil mist in return for Willows, which the bosses drop. Both versions of the game have the choice of selecting US/JP/CHI languages despite their region. The Japanese version however has spoken dialogue while the US version doesn't. And the "Bonus round" is called "Tea Time" in JP version. That's all the difference I noticed.

Doraemonnobita.JPG

Doraemon Nobita no Dorabian Night

A simple platformer featuring the famous robotic cat from the future Doraemon. The game takes place through several time periods, from dinosaurs to arabian nights. Each stage has a boss that needs to be defeated to rescue one of Doraemon's friends.

Doubledragon2A.JPG

Double Dragon II - The Revenge

This is basically an enhanced version of NES Double Dragon II. There are similarities in some stages. One move was added that when an enemy grabs you from behind, you can get free by kicking in front of you (hitting anybody who was about to punch you) and then throwing your grabber over you shoulder. The sprites are bigger and more colorful. There are animated cutscenes between levels and 3 endings depending on the difficulty.

Download2.JPG

Download II

A good horizontal shoot'em up. The last boss appears to be Hitler

Downtownkoushinkyoku1.JPG

Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku - Soreyuke Daiundoukai

This nekketsu game features Nekketsu High competing against three other teams (Hanazono, Reiho, and an inter-school union) in a series of four athletic events. Think of it like an urban olympic track meet across rooftops all the way down to the sewers. Up to four players can participate. It's pretty fun, best played with human opponents for maximum party game enjoyment.

Downtownnekketsu1.JPG

Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari

River City Ransom! If you never heard of this game, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!?

It plays kinda like double dragon but with more interesting characters who actually have lines. There are many weapons you can pick up and use or throw, even enemies bodies can be hurled across the screen. Items and special moves can be purchased in malls to replenish health and stats. A direct NES port with upgraded graphics and audio. A must get!

Dragonballzpce.JPG

Dragonball Z - Idainaru Son Gokuu Densetsu

This is a special kind of fighting game. You don't directly control the attack moves but isntead input them in advance (offense, defense, neutral or fireball) and hold the I button and get in a tug-o-war sorts of match. You decide how much power you want to use in your moves as well. It's a very strategic type of fighting game. The animation is pretty well done. The game stars Goku from his Dragonball young boy era all the way to Dragonball Z to fight Cell.

Fausetteamour.JPG

Fausseté Amour

Mix Ghouls 'n Ghost and Bionic Commando, and you get Fausseté Amour. Coruk is a girl in armor who attacks with a spear chain. Besides a weapon, it is also a grappling hook used to swing around to reach other places. When Coruk gets hit, she loses her armor, one more hit after that and she dies (and lies all naked on the ground

Fiendhunter2.JPG

Fiend Hunter

An action/adventure game that plays like Prince of Persia with some RPG elements.

You walk around town talking to people and buying items at first then you venture out in the wilderness to fight monsters and enemies. Moving around is just like PoP, walking & running, hanging on ledges and timing your jumps. When you encounter an enemy, you automatically go in battle mode with your energy sword. What really really got my attention that there is one unique enemy per fight in the entire game. You never encounter the same monster twice (40 total).

Flashhiders.JPG

Flash Hiders

The fighting game prequel of Battle Tycoon: Flash Hiders SFX (SNES). There is a scenario mode, advanced mode and versus mode. In scenario mode you only play as Bang to advance the story, in advance mode you can select anybody and you fight the rest, you can gain stat points to add to your offense, defense, speed.

It's an average 2D fighting game like any other

Fraycdxak.JPG

Fray CD Xak Gaiden

As the "gaiden" implies, Fray CD is a side story of the main game series "Xak".

Fray is a girl who gets rescued by Xak's main hero, Latok, during the events of the first Xak game. She gets a crush on him and decides to learn magic to be useful to him. This game takes place during Xak II, Fray is searching for Lotak.

The game is an action RPG but you only move straight forward, there is no exploration involved. There are some towns between levels where you interact with townspeople and buy items.

GalaxykeijigayvanA.JPG

Galaxy Keiji Gayvan

A side-scrolling beat'em up, supports 2-players. There the main game and also a versus mode where you can also select the bad guys to fight with. The main game is a beat'em up with only one layer, meaning you can't walk up and down like other games of the genre. That makes the game surprisingly very challenging. You have special moves you can execute with combination of the D-pad+buttons and even let armor appear around you, which slowly drains its own energy away. The sprites are very well animated, a must get.

Genocidepce.JPG

Genocide

A 2D action game where you're a giant robot armed with only a sword while everybody else is armed with guns

GingafukeiB.JPG

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire

In 2092 timetravel has become a reality. In order to keep this power from being abused, a special police force was established made up of 4 girls each with their own ship. Their goal is to stop a group of mysterious time terrorists who always seem to be one time zone ahead of them. Each has its own characteristics and there are 3 weapon powerups available. Sapphire is a gem in the PCE CD collection, it was released in very small quantities and fetch a hefty sum in online auctions. There is a bootleg version too. What is so unique about this game (besides just being awesome for a 2-player shmup game) is it has polygon rendered models on bosses which are fluidly animated. This shows what the arcade card is truly capable of.

Godpanic.JPG

God Panic - Shijyou Saikyo Gundan

A shmup where you're a flying ninja and attack funny-looking enemies with even funnier-looking backgrounds.

GotzendienerA.JPG

Gotzendiener

Now here's an original game. Instead of being the shining knight rescuing the princess, he gets killed right at the beginning of the game. The princess has to fight the monsters and survive on her own. Talk about emancipation and girl power! This "Prince of Persia"-like isometric adventure game has mostly exploration and puzzle solving and some monster fighting in between. The bad point of this game is that it was clearly rushed and not playtested properly. There are bugs and there are odd holes in the plot, leading to think that the game was initially meant to be much longer than this. Still, it was a nice pace of change playing as the "helpless" princess for once.

Gradius2A.JPG

Gradius II - Gofer no Yabou

Gradius sequel with more weapons, better graphics, bigger levels, bigger and more varied bosses, more difficult........IT'S GRADIUS! What more do you want me to say??

Hawkf123.JPG

Hawk F-123

Horizontal shmup in the vein like U.N. Sqaudron on the SNES. Not as pretty-looking but enjoyable nonetheless. Challenging enough to keep you flying till the end accompanied with great music.

Hihoudensetsu.JPG

Hihou Densetsu Chris no Bouken

A regular platformer, you're a girl with a sword.

HorrorstoryA.JPG

Horror Story

Clearly that was inspired by Ghostbusters. You shoot ghosts in this hard platformer and face the boss at the end of the level. Nothing new there but the game is quite challenging. Having 2 players will help you out alot. You can double jump to reach high places and get powerups and extra armor.

Iganinden.JPG

Iga Ninden Gaiou

Platformer with ninja action and story-telling between levels. Very average.

Imagefight2A.JPG

Image Fight II

Vertical shoot'em up with great powerup weapons, good music and interesting stage designs made by Irem. (They made the R-Types and In the Hunt so you know what to expect).

Juuouki.JPG

Juuouki

ALTERED BEAST WITH VIDEOS!!!

Kabukiitouryodan.JPG

Kabuki Itouryodan

A 2D fighting game featuring characters from Tengai Makyo Fuun Kabuki Den It's a standard 2D Street Fighter clone.

(BTW THE EMU NEEDS TO IMPLEMENT ARCADE CARD SUPPORT TO PLAY THIS ONE OR MAYBE ITS A BUG BECAUSE ALWAYS I GET AN ERROR AND I CAN'T SEE THE OPTION TO CHOOSE ARCADE CARD)

Kaizouchoujin3A.JPG

Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman 3 - Makai no Princess

A great platformer game which also supports 2 players. You hack and slash through enemies and bosses in colorful stages on foot and several types of vehicles. I really liked this one, challenging yet not frustrating. What the story itself is about I don't know but that didn't stop me from having a good time.YOU MUST GET THIS ONE PHIL, PERIOD!!!

Kakutouhaou.JPG

Kakutou Haou Densetsu Algunos

A regular 2D fighter. The sprites could've been bigger but it's still an allright game. A 6-button pad is recommended.

KazekiriB.JPG

Kaze Kiri - Ninja Action

If you're looking for a fast-paced adrenaline-filled action on the PCE-CD, look no further! Kaze Kiri - Ninja Action has it all! Great animation, great enemy AI, great ninja music, great variations of attacks. Backflips, forward flips, sliding, dive kick. kunai, sword, throws and cloaking. All that is possible on this 2-button controller! The kunai and cloak cost health but you constantly generate it back. Get this now!

THIS. GAME. IS. PERFECT. !.

Kazexanadu3.JPG

Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu

The Legend of Xanadu is a classic amongst Falcom's massive game library. It plays like Ys (walk into enemies) but it also has 2D platform boss sections. You do not gain levels here, instead you get stronger with proficiency. By hitting and getting hit, your weapons and armor become better. And resting to restore your HP increases you total HP based on how much you lost. In the boss segments you fight a small number of enemies in a platformer fashion before reaching the boss. It is possible to get a NPC helper who will attack with you. A neat feature of realism in this game is that it's realtime when outside. The sun rises and sets as you go about doing your business. The villagers react to this as well, they take lunch breaks and go to sleep when it's night (which means you can't use shops or inns).

Kazexanadu2A.JPG

Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu II

You are Arios, accompanied by Daimos, you search for your missing friend whose ship was attacked by Dragon Riders. The sequel ups the ante in the graphics and music department. The sideways boss action scenes are downright beautifully drawn, it reminded me of the Tales games. And on the map screens, you do get to swing your sword this time. You'll explore some large areas, solve puzzles, talk to people, etc RPG etc. A pretty game.

Kiaidan1.JPG

Kiaidan 00

Clearly inspired by giant robot anime like Mazinger Z, this shoot'em up has you flying your robot Kaidan against waves of enemies. You have 4 weapons which you can select at any time. All stages feature a midboss halfway the stage before facing the level boss at the end.The game is pretty challenging, you can die easily if you're reckless but patient gamers will prevail with skill.

Ldis1.JPG

L-Dis

A colorful cute'em up that will probably make you giggle. Give it a try, it's fun.

MadstalkerB.JPG

Mad Stalker - Full Metal Force

An overlooked 2D robot brawler, Mad Stalker is pretty good. Fast-paced action using 3 different robot to beat the crap out of an army of everything-that-gets-in-your-way. Each robot has its own fighting stle and weapons, which you can use anytime. If you want to get far, you have to play aggressively and fast, the enemy won't give you much breathing room as you progress in Story mode. In Versus mode it's a 1-on-1 fighting game, enemy robots can be used here as well.

Martialchampion.JPG

Martial Champion

An inferior Street Fighter 2 clone. Nothing special, just like its original arcade version. You really need a 6-button controller or else you can't do alot of moves.

Metamor2.JPG

Metamor Jupiter

Horizontal shmup where your spacecraft can turn around and fire behind him with the push of a button. No more enemies sneaking up behind you where you can't attack them anymore! You have 3 switchable weapons already available for you, they can be upgraded. You can also get option bits (like in Gradius) but only a maximum of two. Holding down the fire button charges them up to do a special attack, depending on the currently selected weapon. Here's what I REALLY liked about those bits: they can be controlled by player 2 and player 3!! Human-controlled assists in a shmup, that's genius! (The enemy will never aim at them because they're bits, not the main player).

Miraishonenconan.JPG

Mirai Shonen Conan

A platformer with alot of cutscenes. It's based on the post-apocalyptic anime of the same name.

Mugensenshi2.JPG

Mugen Senshi Valis - Legend of a Fantasm Soldier

The Valis games tell the story of Yuko Asou, a schoolgirl in late 1980s Japan who is fated to protect three different realms: Earth, the land of spirits, and the dream world Vecanti, by wielding a mystical sword known as Valis. They're all 2D platformers. The PCE-CD version is a remake of the Genesis version (the original game came out on the MSX and PC-88). Rogles, a warlord from Vecanti stirs up trouble and Yuko is called by Valis to save everybody in Vecanti. Lotsa anime scenes between the levels, this applies to all the Valis games.

Mysticformula.JPG

Mystic Formula

Overhead fantasy action game where you progress killing everything in your path before facing the boss. There are 4 characters to select from, each with their own attacks. Supports 2 players. There is a powerup that temporarily adds one of the unchosen characters as an AI-controlled ally.

NexzrB.JPG

Nexzr

Nexzr incorporates pure, hardcore to the core gameplay packed with great audio-visuals. You have option-weapons that typically enhance your standard main firepower: homing missiles, homing satellite ships, lasers, are all there. The opening movie shows your beloved getting killed by a red mecha so you search for it, vengeance style! The game is awesome, challenging, colorful, filled with constant explosions and firepower. Defenitely for shmup fans.

Popnmagic.JPG

Pop'n Magic

Very colorful Bubble Bobble clone with cutscenes between levels. You trap monsters in a colored bubble and hit them with the same color to defeat them. Pick wrong color and things might go bad for you.

PsystormB.JPG

Psychic Storm

A good shoot'em up with some Engrish added and 4 selectable pilots with their own unique firepower. When you power up your craft, you transform for a limited time into a big insect-like ship with enhanced firepower. The great thing in 2-player mode, when one player powers up, the other player automatically merges on it inside and becomes an extra cannon that can fire in every direction onscreen by aiming with a cursor.

RainbowislandsA.JPG

Rainbow Islands

The sequel of Bubble Bobble.

RanmapceA.JPG

Ranma ½ - Ni Bun no Ichi

Anime/manga fans know about Ranma by now. Cursed water, boy turn into girl, dad into panda, etc etc. This game plays like a 2D action game, you run to the right fighting enemies and face a boss at the end. There are alot of voiced animated cutscenes between levels. The game follows the manga from the beginning up to Ranma's second battle with Ryoga.

RanmadatouA.JPG

Ranma ½ - Datou, Ganso Musabetsu Kakutou-Ryuu!

2D Ranma fighter. Takes place when Happosai is introduced in the story.

THIS IS THE ONE THAT I'VE BEEN FIXING THE "PERFECT CUE SYSTEM" IN THE EMU AND NOW RUNS BETTER

Rayxanber2.JPG

Rayxanber II

Good horizontal shoot'em up. You like R-type? You'll like this one.

Rayxanber3.JPG

Rayxanber III

Sequel with improved visuals

Rennyblaster.JPG

Renny Blaster

A 2D action platformer where you play as one of two guys, a fighter or a magician. No idea what the story is about, you fight humans, monsters, biological experiments and stuff. The fighter has a limited degree of magic/mystic powers in some of his moves while the magician's special attacks are mostly distance-based, shooting arrows and summoning spirits.

RtypecdA.JPG

R-Type Complete CD

At the beginning of the 22nd century, the people of Earth had developed a peaceful and prosperous civilization. Suddenly THEY appeared. Arriving through an inter-dimensional pulse, they invaded all forms of life, minerals and electronic devices. Existing as a parasite, They multiplied rapidly. They have ravaged nearby planets and have chosen Earth as their next target for colonisation. This evil is called simply the "BYDO". R-Type's prime feature is the Force Pod, an indestructible orb that can be attached to the front or back of your ship for better offense/defense, it can be detached for clever strategic uses as well to kill hard to reach enemies. R-Type Complete CD is basically a CD remake of the HuCard R-Type with upgraded graphics/music and has alot of narrated cutscenes added.

Ruinkami.JPG

Ruin Kami no Isan

Action RPG game where you are assisted by AI companions, just like the Seiken Densetsu games.

SeireisenshisprigganA.JPG

Seirei Senshi Spriggan

Pretty good shoot'em up with a great powerup system. You can collect 3 orbs of different colors. Depending on the choice of colors, your attack will be enhanced or a combination of the different firepower. You can sacrifice an orb as well as a megabomb. Occasionally some weak AI allies will appear to assist you firing weak bullets but they die right away. The real kicker is that once player 2 presses his controls, he can take over and control this ally! It will die with 1 hit and fires a single weak stream of bullets but a human can keep it alive a lot longer than the dumb AI and it is quite useful.

SprigganC.JPG

Spriggan Mark II - Re Terraform Project

A mecha game with lotsa explosions! GREAT GAME!!!

Superdarius.JPG

Super Darius

The plot is about the people of the planet Darius, who are being terrorized by huge intergalatic cybernetic aquatic creatures. The pilots Proco and Tiat are their only hope. You have to collect 7 orbs for each the laser, bombs and shield to level them up to the next level. But this game is unforgiving

Superdarius2A.JPG

Super Darius II

The sequel is more forgiving. You only go down 1 level of power when you die. The sprites are bigger as well (that can be a good or bad thing in a shooter) and better drawn. All the bosses from the previous games appear again a bit smaller as mid-bosses.

SuperraidenA.JPG

Super Raiden

he classic vertical shoot'em up Raiden. Earth gets invaded by aliens in 2090, and scientist make an experimental fighter jet to fight back.

You have 2 types of main fire (laser and spread) and 2 types of missiles (strong unguided missiles an weak homing missiles) and the obvious bomb.

What else is there to say? It's freaking Raiden!

SylphiaA.JPG

Sylphia

In the opening, you are shown a brave warrior girl fighting off monsters to defend people but is ultimately killed. She is brought back to life as a warrior fairy to continue defending the innocent. Pretty original.

Your weapons are element-based: fire, wind and water. Each can be upgraded to become more powerful. I really like the backgrounds in this game, so diverse and detailed. The enemies and bosses are mostly based on Greek mythology, some are really freaky looking.

Valis4A.JPG

Valis IV

After the end of Valis 3, Yuko ascended into goddess-hood, leaving the mortal world behind. As a result the Valis sword has been passed down to the warrior Rena. But not only has Valna been kidnapped, but the evil lord Gallagher is up the usual evil domination stuff. Rena, along with her sister Amu and the demon Asfa, must stop him.

NOTE: ALL VALIS GAMES ARE A MUST!!! BUT PHIL ASKS FOR JAPANESE GAMES AND VALIS 2 & 3 HAVE USA RELEASES

WindsofthunderA.JPG

Winds of Thunder

US release title: Lords of Thunder. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THIS YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT GOOD SHMUPS!!!

Yuyuhakusyopce.JPG

Yu Yu Hakusyo - Yamishoubu! Ankoku Butoujutsu

Based on the manga/anime, you play as the main characters and fight from a first person view shooting at your opponent or their attacks using a cursor. It's very hard, your opponent is moving/running/jumping most of the time making aiming extremely frustrating and will wear your fingers down quite a bit.

ZerowingA.JPG

Zero Wing

There is absolutely no 'All Your Base' reference in this version! No Katz, no Zig, no set us up the bomb! The gameplay appears to be identical to its genesis version though but there are several anime cutscenes between levels and the story is obviously completely different this time.

Thats it Phil, is more or less the ones I have in my xbox that don't need japanese to be played and enjoyed (others like the YS series has usa releases or english patches like XAK III) I recomend try some other japanese games because the PCECD sometimes gives you some surprises with its games even if you can't read japanese at all.

I hope this helps you see ya friend.

Hey Elconejotres,

Yes, this list is great - thank you!

Regarding the bugs, I think you mentioned something about the music not stopping and I wonder if this is limited to the CD based games. I loaded up Darius (the US card release) and I noticed when I paused the game, the music continued. I thought this was weird, but having not played the actually game in years - I'm unable to know for sure if this is incorrect or not.

Can you look into this as well? I wonder if the included TOCs would work OK if this ended up being a bug somewhere else in the emulator. If it is just the TOCs we could always replace them with new ones from TurboRip right? Or are those goofed up too?

Thanks again

Well the cdda music don't stoping is only a problem with the cds, the turbo chips (cards) uses mostly chiptunes and midis so if the music don't stop in darius is because the game is developed that way, in the other hand, the replacement of the tocs with the ones generated in turborip is not a real solution because turborip was designed by RIGG in order to be used with the HU-GO emulator, besides many factors make a game play wrong, from the fact of having a crappy image (ISO/MP3) to even have a "verified" image with synch problems, Turborip only checks and correct the length of the files, but if the audio tracks are wrong, crappy, distorted, or even modified the tool can't detect that, for an example I made a custom Double Dragon II image for my xbox sometime ago in which I replaced the original music tracks with the ones in the arrange album (which actually sound thousands of times better), the only thing necesary to do it was to rename the wave tracks in the correct names and use toc fixer to make the lengths of the tracks match with the toc in turborip, when I used Turborip to make my ISO/CUE/MP3 the tool recognizes the valid toc and say that the image was valid with no mistakes. Besides the problem are the files inside the "pcetoc.zip" file, the .lsn files are just tocs (open those with notepad) but that tocs are designed to emulators with the cores of HU-GO, in most of the cases the games works fine but in others totally screws the game, the start sector in this files is 0000 which is wrong because some pcecds start at sector 150 and then you must do ceiling calculations (and yes I can't do that calculations because I'm not into programing) so it only need a person (like madmab) with the skills and the experience necesary in order to be fixed (besides even if it sounds to be very troublesome and complicated it is not in reality, is just a quick revision and correction thing) so I will work in the list with my limited knowledge and see if that proves usefull to madmab.

Hi,

Well, knowing there is a problem is the first step in solving it. :)

I'm looking forward to that list. The next time I speak to Madmab, I'll be sure he takes a look at it. If its a problem with the perfect cue system, it shouldn't be too difficult to issolate the problem. That list will be essential though since it will reveal the 'in common' errors.

Thanks again!
