Well, it's about damn time. Nintendo's stocks went recently down after the announcement of the new DS because investors did not find the product anymore interesting. They better add the ability to use an external hard drive as well.Finally. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has just announced that, beginning in Spring 2009 (at least for Japan), Nintendo Wii owners will be able to download software directly to an SD card. "We have to address the console's insufficient memory storage," said Iwata, speaking at today's Nintendo Fall Press Conference. This obviously applies only to WiiWare and Virtual Console games, but hey, since they were the things clogging up your memory in the first place, it's hard to see this as anything other than good news. Not perfect news, but still, better than silence.

Its about time but Spring 09 is a little far. I wonder if the homebrew community will have it working before then

This will most definitely lead to more homebrew and piracy. Heck, it's almost enough to make me go out and get a Wii.

The community will have homebrew (and unfortunately warez too no doubt), running off hdd's hooked up via usb by Spring next year. Whether or not it gets a public leak.
A more pressing issue is what seems to be Nintendo's increasing lack of concern in regard to pandering to regular gamers requests, as seen with the storage issue. If they can continue to thrive on a constant output of gimmicky accessories and pseudo-games, its gonna look even less likely that the potential of the Wii will ever be fully explored.

Apparently this is the case but you cant run the software from the SD card. You still have to move everything from the sd card to the wii hard drive. This basically isnt a solution at all. Makes me wonder what the nintendo guys are thinking

This doesn't matter, I have a Wii along with a 500GB external with 30 Wii games on it, not very exciting. I'll post pictures soon if you peeps don't believe me.
