Coming this fall is the first handheld version of the Metal Slug series since the two games on the NeoGeo Pocket Color, Metal Slug: First Mission and Metal Slug: Second Mission. Metal Slug Advance, developed by Playmore in Japan, is an original design based upon the gameplay established in the many different games in the Metal Slug series. Players will have to blast their way through more than five missions of intense action, rescuing hostages hidden along the way. The Game Boy Advance title will even feature a Rescue Hostage Challenge, recording each hostage rescued during the challenge. All of the expected gameplay elements will be in the GBA game, from the over-the-top weaponry to the vehicles that can be hopped into during battle. The only thing missing is a two-player mode; Metal Slug Advance is a single-player only game.
Unique to the Game Boy Advance version will be a series of cards that can be uncovered and collected, and saved to the cartridge. Sort of like the Metal Slug version of Pokemon, several of these cards will give players additional abilities, which can be turned on and off at any time during the gameplay. There are more than a hundred cards to collect in Metal Slug Advance, giving the game design an additional layer of replayability.
