I have some amazing phobia with blender, i've tried it a few times, but couldn't get a foot hold of it yet. Thanks, I will give it another shot though.

I haven't seen a free 3D modelling software that has an interface that meets industry standard, I use 3Ds Max 2010 but that obviously not free!

Swift 3D is a personal favourite. You said that 3D studio Max was too complicated. I therefore advise you to use swift 3d. It is very easy to use with an amazing interface. It is verypowerful and you can create advanced mdoels and animations. A greeat thign is that you can render 3d animations and export them as flash files.

these 3 are warm recommendations.

- XSI SoftImage has a free edition. Good one to make mods for Valve games.

- Houdini apprentice edition (fetches a free licence from their site).

- Vue 7 has a free "Personal Learning Edition" edition.
http://www.e-onsoftware.com/try/vue_7_ple/
