System level DRM? Not want.
Sandboxing of said DRM? Not want
DirectX 11 on this ONLY? Not want
I've had it with Microsoft, I'm sticking with XP until it's no longer viable, then it's 100% Linux for me.
A big "F**K YOU!" Microsoft, and I'm never looking back. Vista was the biggest joke in the history of operating systems, why would I want to get within 10 yards of this garbage?

It seems there are only a handful of keys and not specific to user.
32 bit:
GG4MQ-MGK72-HVXFW-KHCRF-KW6KY
6JKV2-QPB8H-RQ893-FW7TM-PBJ73
QXV7B-K78W2-QGPR6-9FWH9-KGMM7
TQ32R-WFBDM-GFHD2-QGVMH-3P9GC
4HJRK-X6Q28-HWRFY-WDYHJ-K8HDH
64bit:
JYDV8-H8VXG-74RPT-6BJPB-X42V4
7XRCQ-RPY28-YY9P8-R6HD8-84GH3
482XP-6J9WR-4JXT3-VBPP6-FQF4M
RFFTV-J6K7W-MHBQJ-XYMMJ-Q8DCH
D9RHV-JG8XC-C77H2-3YF6D-RYRJ9
I installed the 32 bit on my mac a little while ago but haven't used it yet since I have to study. I also need to install the drivers which are somewhere on my backup DVD.

That's what I read from the previews, but it's windows, and I don't want to give it a shot until I hear from someone trustworthy (a member from this board) that Windows 7 isn't lame and doesn't alter performance like Vista does.

I can't give specific benchmarks, but honestly it feels quite snappy. Uses about 1.2gb of ram not doing anything (that 1.2gb includes virus scanner).
My previous install of Vista 64 (I'm using the 64-bit build of 7 as well) took about 1.6.
The update process was quite easy though. Just burn the disk, run it from windows, and upgrade. ^^
Had to get rid of the "Feedback" link on every window... having it that close to the buttons was horrible.
The start menu itself is very familiar if you're use to Vista at all, but the taskbar itself is very revamped. Visually, it is thicker and has large "quicklaunch" icons on it (not really that new). The main few awesome things are that when it groups the buttons together for similar items, on mouseover it shows previews for them, not only that, it has a close button for each of them. The last goody is the "show desktop" button on the far right of the clock (which now shows the date btw).
Another very welcome feature is that when you drag a window by it's title bar to the edge of the screen, it will show an outline and will fill the screen to that outline (dragging to the left or right fills half, top fills whole screen).
Only been using this for about an hour. ^^

1.2GB of memory? That's disgusting, XP Pro with all the bells and whistles and my filemanager running with firefox open and antivirus etc etc, is using 590MB of RAM here.
Hell my PEAK usage was under 800MB, and that was after running MAME!

uTorrent running also.

It does seem a bit much. Typically XP uses 400MB, and when I used Vista Ultimate it was more like 700MB. I read that MS said the minimum requirements were the same as Vista, ie. 1GHz processor/1 GB RAM/15GB HDD space.
I'm due to get a new computer soon and I thought 2GB would have been ok, but I think I'll go with 4GB now to be safe. I guess I'm too used to this slimline, lightweight OS. Looks like I'll just have to put up with the bloat like everyone else

Installed it as dual boot with vista on a machine with 3 gigs of ram, and I personally like it. Definitely faster than vista, and looks better too. Love the new taskbar. When I free up some space on my main machine (got it 4 years ago, only has 70 gigs of hard drive space - yuck, yes I know - but thankfully I'm getting a new computer soon) I'll try it as a dual boot with XP. Also, if any of you know if booting 7 from an external hard drive (usb) is possible, could you let me know? Wouldn't actually do it myself, just curious.

Absolutely. Now, I'm not totally fed up with Vista, as I can live with it. But you are right - 7 is what Microsoft should have released 2 years ago. I'm just glad that Microsoft managed to get it right this time. Dang I really need to free up some space so I can run it on my own machine...

I started running this the day it went up, and thus far I'm pretty impressed. I did manage to somehow completely break IE8, but i went back into it's settings and set everything back to default and it fixed itself. Overall, it's very well set up, and overall a very good experience. I did notice a few quirks here and there, but that's to be expected from beta software.

Beta?
I've been running it for a couple of days and I can't say it seems any faster than Vista or makes life any easier. It uses almost identical amounts of RAM (700+ MB) that Vista did, nor would I say it booted any quicker. I am having difficulty in installing some apps, and others have text/gfx glitches, but on the whole it is entirely useable (for a
Beta)

I did stick with the beta for a few days but a lot of installers wouldn't work due to it identifying itself as MCE 6.1 or something. I decided to give Vista64 a try and it is blistering. Although it uses 3 times the ram of XP and a shade more CPU, it is quick. I haven't had any driver problems either. I'd have to say it's the best Windows I have used. Hopefully Windows 7 rounds out a bit more over the coming months and I'll switch to the 64-bit version of that.

For the general public it's between Home and Ultimate really. I don't see the problem with giving people the choice. If you don't want/need all the extras that Ultimate offers then you aren't forced into it. Go for either of the two Home versions. Starter/Business don't come into the picture.

someone had asked if you could install it to an external HDD and boot it from there? You can but you lose a little speed with opening and running things off of it. It's not like media transport from external hdd. All you do to boot the installed OS from external HDD is change your settings on boot order in your bios. If you have a somewhat new PC then it would have USB, or legacy USB in the boot menu. Just put that first before your optical drive, or internals, and it will boot.

If you use the Media Center Extender then you can play those avi's, but I found it chewed up a lot of cpu and ram to use it so I just went back to Vista. It was also very unreliable, usually resetting itself and/or forgetting network/sharing settings after a reboot.
I read over at X-S that the old trick of renaming the avi to mp4 allowed the 360 to see the files in normal sharing mode. I didn't get a chance to try this myself before I went back to Vista though.
